The Memphis Grizzlies general manager refuses to confirm whether the team made a formal offer to Allen Iverson.

Iverson wrote on Twitter Wednesday that Memphis had made him an offer, and ESPN.com reported general manager Chris Wallace confirmed the Grizzlies had made a formal offer. But Wallace, through a team spokesman yesterday, would only say he did not confirm an offer to ESPN.com.

"We have had a strong level of interest in Allen Iverson since the beginning of free agency and we have made that very clear to him," Wallace said in a statement.

The Memphis Commercial-Appeal reported on its Web site that he was offered an incentive-laden deal that starts at $3.5 million.

Iverson tweeted yesterday he thinks Memphis has "good young players with a great upside." He also wrote he is working out with former teammate Eric Snow to add about 10 pounds to his frame.

"I would lead by example. I could show how important it is to work hard everyday, play the game the right way, & just like it's your last!" he wrote.

In reason days, Iverson also has been linked with his former 76ers coach, Larry Brown, who is now in Charlotte. Brown, who took the Sixers to the NBA Finals in 2001, has said he'd like to have Iverson, but with the roster and salary constraints, he's not sure he could make a suitable offer.

Iverson averaged 17.4 points on for Detroit, which acquired him in an early-season trade with Denver. The 15-year veteran has averaged 27.1 points for his career.

Iverson's agent, Leon Rose, did not immediately return a message left at his office by the Associated Press yesterday.
