Cardinals, Cubs split doubleheader
In the afternoon game, Carlos Zambrano pitched six solid innings and hit his third homer of the season, helping Chicago beat St. Louis, 7-3.
In the night game, Ryan Ludwick hit a pair of two-run homers and Adam Wainwright pitched eight strong innings to lead St. Louis to a 4-2 win.
Cubs starter Randy Wells (4-4) handled Cardinals superstar Albert Pujols in Game 2, but couldn't get Ludwick out. Wells got Pujols to hit into a double play with runners on first and second and no outs in the first inning. Ludwick followed with a two-run shot to center.
Wells gave up a leadoff single to Colby Rasmus in the sixth inning. Pujols followed with a groundout to third, but Ludwick tagged Wells again to put the Cardinals up by 4-1.
Wainwright improved to 3-0 against the Cubs this season. All-star closer Ryan Franklin, a former Phillies bust, struck out the side in the final inning for his 21st save of the season in 22 tries. His earned run average is 0.79.
