Berks County remained undefeated in the Carpenter Cup softball tournament and advanced to today's championship game by beating Delaware South, 1-0, yesterday at FDR Park.

Third baseman Steph Graver had two hits, and catcher Rachel Trupp scored the only run of the game as Berks pitchers Jess Elper, Carissa Harris and Samantha Denlinger combined for the seven-hit shutout.

Berks County (4-0) will play the winner of today's 11 a.m. semifinal game between Delaware South (3-1) and Suburban One League American/Continental (3-1) for the championship on Field 5 at 1 p.m. If Berks County were to lose the 1 p.m. game, a deciding game between the same two teams would be played at 3 p.m.

Suburban One League American/Continental beat Jersey Shore, 4-1, yesterday to earn today's matchup with Delaware South. The winners scored four runs in the third inning on a single by Samantha Haber, a double by Mary Ward and three errors and a fielder's choice.

Bacon takes over at Glen Mills. Craig Mellinger resigned in March as basketball coach at Glen Mills School, capping a 17-year career with the Bulls. Last week, Tony Bacon, Mellinger's longtime assistant, was named as he replacement.

"My son [Craig] is going to be a junior at [Avon Grove High School], and my daughter [Amy] is going to be a freshman," said Mellinger, who said he wants to spend more time with his family.

Mellinger compiled a 311-150 record at Glen Mills and led the Bulls to two PIAA District 1 Class AAAA championships and two Del-Val League titles.
