Michigan men lead in Dad Vail Regatta

On yesterday's first day of the 71st annual Dad Vail Regatta on the Schuylkill, the University of Michigan men turned in the best time in the heavyweight eight, 4:03.003, while top-seeded and defending champion Purdue was next at 4:04.543.

In the women's competition, UC-Irvine's eight led the way with a time of 5:00.885.

The three men's heavyweight semifinals are set for a 7 a.m. start tomorrow. The women will follow, with the men's final for the Richard O'Brien Trophy set for a noon start. The Evelyn Bergman Trophy for the women is scheduled to be contested at 12:07.

The regatta features more than 3,500 rowers from 125 schools from the United States and Canada. *
