The news was not what the Flyers wanted.
But it is unavoidable.
Rookie defenseman Ryan Parent's right shoulder has not improved and he will need surgery to repair a torn labrum suffered in a preseason game last month against the New York Islanders in London, Ontario.
According to general manager Paul Holmgren, Parent will miss the first 12 to 14 weeks of the season.
"He'll miss significant time. He's going to need surgery on his right shoulder. He has a torn labrum," Holmgren said. "We tried to do the conservative route with a little rest and some rehab and it didn't work and it's not going in the right direction. We decided today to go the aggressive route." *
