Kate Lazorko is a senior defender for the Nazareth Academy girls' soccer team. She is also the leader of a Pandas team that has struggled some since the start of the 2006 season.
Despite her team's disappointments, the 17-year-old never points figures and always gives 100 percent.
Question: Why do you keep coming out for the team?
Answer: It's about the team. It's not about me. I keep in it for the team. We are a team.
Q: What was your proudest moment of the season?
A: Probably when we tied Gwynedd-Mercy [1-1], because we all came to play. We all gave a lot of heart that day.
Q: What was your most disappointing moment?
A: Probably the [7-0] Villa Maria loss at Villa Maria. We didn't show up that game.
Q: How long have you been playing soccer?
A: I have been playing soccer since I was about 3 or 4.
Q: Do you play any other sports?
A: I also play lacrosse.
Q: What do you like most about playing soccer?
A: It teaches you how to become a team player. And being a senior, I had to step up and be a leader. So it teaches you leadership skills.
Q: Do you see yourself playing soccer in college?
A: I would like to continue playing soccer in college. But I'm looking at the academic aspect first.
Q: Which colleges you are interested in attending?
A: I was interested in [the University of] Scranton . . . and DeSales University.
Q: What do you see yourself doing in five years?
A: I would actually like to be an athletic director and coach at a school. I would like to pass my knowledge down.
Three things about last week
1. Thumbs up to Ben Franklin lineman Lydell Boanes for his tearful apology to the Bok football team after two of his teammates started a bench-clearing brawl.
2. Making a huge statement, the West Chester Henderson boys' soccer team did the unthinkable: It beat nationally ranked Downingtown West.
3. It's great to see that Academy of the New Church senior Shannon Givens is the latest area basketball star who chose to stay at home to play in college. The point guard made an oral commitment to Drexel.
Three things about this week
1. In a big boys' soccer game tomorrow at 8 p.m., Father Judge plays North Catholic at the United German Hungarian Soccer Club in Oakford, Bucks County.
2. The Notre Dame field hockey team will host Episcopal Academy in tomorrow's 3:30 p.m. matchup in Villanova.
3. The Bok football team will go for its 37th consecutive Public League regular-season victory in Friday's 6 p.m. home game against Nueva Esperanza.
Pompey's Super Seven
The top seven fall sports teams in Southeastern Pennsylvania, regardless of sport:
1. North Penn football. The Knights averaged 45.5 points in their last two games.
2. Merion Mercy girls' volleyball. The Golden Bears are a lock to win their second consecutive Class AA state title.
3. Malvern Prep football. North Penn had better watch out for the Friars.
4. Conestoga girls' soccer. The Pioneers have won their eight Central League games by a combined score of 48-3.
5. Lower Merion boys' soccer. The Aces have a big test today against Central League rival Strath Haven.
6. Friends' Central girls' tennis. The Phoenix shouldn't have a problem winning a fifth straight Friends Schools League championship.
7. North Penn boys' cross-country. The Knights are expected to successfully defend their PIAA Class AAA state title.
Under consideration: Central Bucks East boys' soccer, Garnet Valley football, Upper Merion girls' volleyball, Downingtown West boys' soccer, and Downingtown West girls' soccer.
