Sports in Brief: Citing injury, Gay quits race

World champion Tyson Gay pulled out of the Van Damme Memorial track meet in Brussels, Belgium, yesterday, leaving Asafa Powell as the main challenger to Usain Bolt, the Olympic triple gold medalist.

Gay, recovering from a hamstring injury, said the prospect of running in the cold weather was too risky.

Bolt holds the world record in the 100 meters at 9.69 seconds. Powell, who finished fifth in the Beijing Games, matched the second-fastest time ever of 9.72 on Tuesday.

Pro basketball

NBA commissioner David Stern was so angered by the alleged actions of rookies Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur that he ordered their expulsion from the league's rookie transition program on Wednesday, ESPN the Magazine reported yesterday.

The former Kansas players allegedly were involved with marijuana and women at the program at the Doral Arrowwood resort in Rye Brook, N.Y.

Golf

Rory McIlroy shot an 8-under-par 63 to take a 3-stroke lead after the first round of the European Masters. The 19-year-old had nine birdies on the Crans-sur-Sierre course in Switzerland.

Elsewhere: The first round of the BMW Championship was washed out by rain at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis. The round will start today, with 36 holes scheduled for tomorrow.

Colleges

Chris Nickson threw for a touchdown and ran for another as Vanderbilt (2-0) earned a 24-17 upset of No. 24 South Carolina (1-1) in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams in Nashville.

Freshman guard Ray Willis, an Oklahoma basketball player stabbed early Sunday morning at a Norman nightclub, has been released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.

Power forward Herb Pope has transferred to Seton Hall after playing last season at New Mexico State.

The 6-foot-8 Pope, a former star at Aliquippa High in Western Pennsylvania, won't be eligible until 2009-10.

West Chester moved the kickoff for tomorrow's home opener against Lock Haven to 11 a.m from 1 p.m. because of anticipated poor weather from Tropical Storm Hanna.

Cheyney also moved its football game against visiting Mercyhurst from 1 p.m. to 11 a.m.

Boxing

Vitali Klitschko and Samuel Peter will fight at the '02 World Arena in Berlin on Oct. 11 for the World Boxing Council belt that Klitschko lost in 2005 after withdrawing from a title bout because of a torn right-knee ligament.
