Major League Baseball announced yesterday that Phillies third-base coach Steve Smith has been suspended for two games and fined an undisclosed amount for "inappropriate actions" directed at umpires Chris Guccione and Bill Welke in the seventh inning of last Friday's game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Triple-A Lehigh Valley manager Dave Huppert will take Smith's place beginning tonight against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium.
Smith went ballistic after Ryan Howard was called out on a play at first base. After Smith was ejected and began to walk off the field, he tossed a batting helmet in the direction of the umpires.
