If you missed it, the first two installments of the 2008 World Series of Poker main event replay this evening. The first time I ever played poker was with Inquirer staff writer Mike Jensen. We were covering the NCAA tournament in Boston, and there was a snowstorm that imprisoned all the scribes in the media hotel. Here's how the conversation went:
Jensen: Do you play cards?
Me: No.
Jensen: Do you have money on you?
Me: Yes.
Jensen: Great. You're in. Nothing to worry about.
After that initial bludgeoning, I grew to love poker. Not just because of its nuance and strategy, not just because of the rush, but also because of what the game represents.
It's not solely about how to play a flush draw or what falls on the river. The best part about poker has nothing to do with the game and everything to do with hope. One minute you could be working a terrible 9-to-5 office gig - or, say, embarrassing your family and friends with a titled, Cheshire-grin column picture - the next you're scooping millions and heading for an island.
Those aren't cards and chips spread across the felt - it's the American Dream.
Give it a look, then shoot me an e-mail and we'll set up a game with Jensen. Bring money.
ESPN2, 7-9 p.m. today.
