All across southern Louisiana, college and pro teams spent the weekend packing up and leaving their regular training sites for safe havens away from the coast.
Tulane's football team traveled to Birmingham, Ala., yesterday, a day ahead of the projected arrival of Hurricane Gustav, which is threatening Louisiana's coast.
The New Orleans Saints, who, like Tulane, spent their 2005 regular season outside New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina struck, were in Indianapolis, where they intended to practice until Friday. The Saints' season opener Sept. 7 is scheduled for the Louisiana Superdome.
The New Orleans Zephyrs, the triple-A affiliate of the New York Mets, canceled their last two home games of the season.
After canceling its game this Thursday at New Mexico State, Nicholls State told football players to evacuate the low-lying town of Thibodaux, La., nearly 60 miles southwest of New Orleans.
Louisiana-Lafayette and McNeese State football players also were told to ride out the storm with their families.
The Southeastern Louisiana football team left campus in Hammond, bound for Oxford, Miss.

Les Miles told players to take today off and find a safe place to stay before reporting back tomorrow at 1 p.m. LSU's next scheduled game is Saturday in Baton Rouge against Troy.

Fenuki Tupou missed the Ducks' win over Washington because he accepted a meal and received $100 from the representative of a professional sport management firm, the university said.

Lamarr Houston was arrested on a misdemeanor drunken driving charge a few hours after the No. 11 Longhorns' 52-10 season-opening win over Florida Atlantic.

Houston could not be reached for comment.

Vivian Cheruiyot did the same in the women's race, finishing in 8:33.66.
