Eagles Notes

Jackson takes seat for finale

If you were wondering how valuable rookie DeSean Jackson has become in the eyes of Eagles coach Andy Reid, you got the answer last night.

It's rare when a rookie on Reid's roster sits out the preseason finale, but the coach didn't want to risk injury to Jackson with Kevin Curtis, who has a sports hernia, out indefinitely and Reggie Brown rehabilitating a strained left hamstring.

Jackson spent the evening with the rest of the starters watching the Eagles' preseason loss to the New York Jets.

"It's one of those subjective decisions there," Reid said. "I thought he had been playing well enough where he could sit this one out."

Reid said he couldn't think of another time when one of his healthy rookies was allowed to be a spectator in the final preseason game.

"I was thinking of that when I decided to sit him," the coach said. "I can't think of another time right off the top of my head. Maybe there was one."

Earlier in the week, quarterback Donovan McNabb said the Eagles would have a "midget grouping" this season with Jackson, Lorenzo Booker and Brian Westbrook on the field at the same time.

Jackson said he wasn't sure the "midget grouping" would catch on.

"Nah, nah, he hasn't run it by me yet," Jackson said.

Booker, who apparently prefers being described as vertically challenged, feigned offense at McNabb's description.

"I already told Donovan he's going to hear from my lawyer," Booker said. "A guy of his stature in the community should be aware of others' feelings. Here he is making me feel ashamed of something that I can't control.

"Really, this is one of the reasons why I will enjoy playing for this team. When your leader is that kind of guy who doesn't allow you to take football too seriously, it's a lot of fun. When you talk about me, DeSean and [Westbrook], we're all no higher than 5-10 and I'm the tallest among the three, so I feel pretty good about that."

Booker was the only member of the Eagles' 21st-century Smurfs who had to play with the second-team offense last night. He suffered a hip pointer, but remained in the game.

Jean-Gilles hurts knee

Guard Max Jean-Gilles left the game late in the fourth quarter with a sprained left knee and will undergo an MRI exam this morning. If the injury is serious, it could alter the 53-man roster and open a spot for an offensive lineman who might not otherwise have made the team.

Defensive tackle Dan Klecko, who seems to have earned a spot as the fourth defensive tackle, left in the second quarter with a wrist injury, but he returned and registered a sack in the final quarter.

Roster projection

Here's a look at the projected 53-man roster by Eagles beat writer Bob Brookover.

QB: McNabb, Kevin Kolb, A.J. Feeley; RB: Westbrook, Correll Buckhalter, Booker; FB: Jason Davis; WR: Curtis, Brown, Jackson, Hank Baskett, Greg Lewis, Jason Avant; TE: L.J. Smith and Brent Celek; OL: Thomas, Todd Herremans, Jamaal Jackson, Shawn Andrews, Jon Runyan, Jean-Gilles, Nick Cole, Winston Justice, King Dunlap, Mike McGlynn.

Safety: Brian Dawkins, Quintin Mikell, Sean Considine, J.R. Reed, Quintin Demps; CB: Asante Samuel, Sheldon Brown, Lito Sheppard and Joselio Hanson; LB: Omar Gaither, Stewart Bradley, Chris Gocong, Akeem Jordan, Rocky Boiman, Joe Mays; DL: Mike Patterson, Brodrick Bunkley, Trent Cole, Juqua Parker, Victor Abiamiri, Chris Clemons, Trevor Laws, Darren Howard, Klecko and Bryan Smith; specialists: David Akers, Sav Rocca, Jon Dorenbos.

Extra points

Jean-Gilles, who was penalized three times in the Eagles' second preseason game against the Carolina Panthers, took a bad personal-foul penalty for a late hit after Booker had picked up 7 yards to reach the Jets' 3-yard line. The penalty backed up the Eagles to the 18-yard line, and they eventually had to settle for a field goal. . . . Akers prevented a potential kickoff return for a touchdown by tackling Ahmad Carroll after a 40-yard return in the second quarter.
