High Schools - Central League high school football preview

Garnet Valley

Coach: Mike Ricci

Last year: 13-2. A school-record season saw the Jaguars win a second straight District 1 Class AAA championship and advance to the PIAA Class AAA state championship game, losing to Thomas Jefferson, 28-3.

Key players: Jared Bonacquisti (Sr. FB, 6-1, 195), Tim Keyser (Sr. HB, 5-10, 175), Chris Palaio (Sr. HB, 5-9, 170), Nick Garcia (Sr. DT, 6-3, 320), Tim Putman (Sr. OT, 6-1, 245), Mark McHugh (Jr. QB, 6-0, 185).

Games to watch: At Strath Haven (Sept. 19), at Conestoga (Sept. 26), Haverford (Oct. 3), Ridley (Oct. 31), at Upper Darby (Nov. 7).

What to expect: The Jags will be the team to beat. All the skill-level players except quarterback Eric Van Wyk are back. But Bonacquisti, Keyser and Palaio are a three-headed monster that will be tough to stop each week. "Each year, we go by the same motto - we can only control what we do," Ricci said. "What need to concentrate on is leave last year behind."

Haverford High

Coach: Joe Gallagher

Last year: 8-4. Made the District 1 Class AAAA playoffs for the first time in school history, losing to Central Bucks South, 34-7.

Key players: Liam McGrath (Sr. QB/DB, 5-11, 170), Bryce Collymore, (Sr. LB/FB, 5-11, 200), Dante Pergolese (Sr. DB/RB, 5-10, 175), Silvio DeAngelo (Sr. OT/DE, 6-1, 215), Nick Rosino (Sr. OG/DT, 6-2, 215).

Games to watch: Strath Haven (Sept. 26), at Garnet Valley (Oct. 3), at Conestoga (Oct. 11), at Ridley (Nov. 7), at Upper Darby (Nov. 27).

What to expect: The league's sleeper team, capable of finishing anywhere from first to fifth. A huge plus is that five starters are back on offense, McGrath at quarterback and four on the offensive line. "We don't have the major impact guys as we did last year, but the overall talent level of this team is better than last year," Gallagher said. "I see us like this: We'll have enough guys where we'll be in every game we play, even with the best teams."

Marple Newtown

Coach: Ray Gionta

Last year: 7-4. Did not make the PIAA District 1 Class AAA playoffs.

Key players: Dan Giordano (Sr. HB, 6-0, 205), Phil Graziano (Sr. HB/Safety, 5-10, 185), Steve Reynolds (Sr. C/DE, 6-2, 195), Kevin Johnson (Jr. QB/CB, 6-1, 180).

Games to watch: At Conestoga (Aug. 29), Garnet Valley (Sept. 5), at Strath Haven (Sept. 12), Haverford (Sept. 19), at Ridley (Oct. 17).

What to expect: Gionta doesn't have the size he did last year, but the Tigers could be faster. They have a killer opening schedule, with Conestoga, Garnet Valley, Strath Haven and Haverford. "Tell me about it," Gionta said. "We have some veteran players back who played a lot last year, but we'll have to learn fast with those four to start. We expect to compete with everyone in the league, but we'll be a team that gets better as the year goes on."

Bill Smithson isn't smiling anymore.

The urbane sales manager, who seemed to be almost enjoying himself during the early days of his trial, was dabbing sweat from his blanched face yesterday after he was found guilty of first degree murder.
