Phillies Notebook: Struggling Eaton weighing on Phillies' mound

THE PHILLIES have already displayed a willingness to alter their rotation based on production, sending Brett Myers down to Triple A to work on his game. Now, with Adam Eaton coming off two starts in which he has allowed 16 runs in 6 1/3 innings, the team has yet to make definitive plans for the back end of its rotation after the All-Star break.

After yesterday's 6-3 win over the Diamondbacks, a reporter asked manager Charlie Manuel if Eaton would get another start.

"Do I think he's going to get another start?" Manuel asked. "I'm sure he'll start again, sooner or later."

Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee said the team has already decided that lefthander Jamie Moyer will start Friday against Florida, followed by Kyle Kendrick on Saturday and, likely, Cole Hamels on Sunday.

But with an off day next Monday, the Phillies are still undecided - at least publicly - about who will start on Tuesday and Wednesday against the Mets.

There are currently three candidates for those two spots: Eaton, Myers and lefthander J.A. Happ, who pitched well in two starts in place of Myers and is currently back at Triple A Lehigh Valley.

The team was impressed with the way Happ handled himself in a 4-2, no-decision win over the Cardinals on July 9, when he allowed two runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Myers is scheduled to pitch again for Triple A Lehigh Valley on Thursday, but could rejoin the big-league club in time to start Tuesday or Wednesday. Eaton has pitched well against the Mets in his career, but has struggled mightily in his last two starts.

Eaton allowed eight runs on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings of a loss to the Diamondbacks Saturday and eight runs on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings of a loss to the Mets on July 7.

In his last five starts, he is 1-4 with a 9.64 ERA. Overall, he is 3-8 with a 5.71 ERA.

Dubee said the team has not discussed sending Eaton to the minors.

"I'm not so sure about whether that would help him as much as its helped Brett," Dubee said.

All-Stars ready

Brad Lidge is fond of baseball history, and thus is looking forward to making the second All-Star appearance of his career in tomorrow's Mid-Summer Classic at Yankee Stadium. But the Phillies closer, who is fifth in the league with 20 saves, is disappointed that he is the lone representative of a Phillies bullpen that entered yesterday ranked first in the NL with a 2.70 ERA.

Yesterday, National League manager Clint Hurdle named Cubs reliever Carlos Marmol to the team to replace teammate Kerry Wood, who will miss the game with a blister on his hand. Marmol is 2-3 with a 4.13 ERA. Phillies relievers Chad Durbin (2-2, 1.89 ERA) and J.C. Romero (4-2, 2.17) both have better numbers.

"It doesn't sit well with me that J.C. is not going or, for that matter, what Chad Durbin has done this year has been unbelievable," Lidge said. "J.C. now has done this ever since he came here. Like I said, nothing against Marmol, but I think J.C. is the best guy to go with. If Wood's going down, why not take J.C., who's been doing it game in and game out for a year now?"

Coste snaps streak

Catcher Chris Coste snapped an 0-for-24 skid with a single through the right side of the infield in the seventh inning. Coste hadn't tallied a hit since going 2-for-4 in a win over the Braves on July 2.

Transaction wire

Prior to the game, the Phillies recalled righthander Joe Bisenius from Triple A Lehigh Valley and sent down lefthander R.J. Swindle. Bisenius appeared in two games last season, allowing two hits, two walks and recording three strikeouts in two scoreless innings. Swindle appeared in three games in his first big-league stint, allowing four runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Phillers

Geoff Jenkins left the game after the seventh inning with a left elbow contusion, but the injury is not expected to be serious. X-rays were negative . . . Cole Hamels allowed a career-high 11 hits yesterday, only the second time in his career he's allowed more than nine hits in a game . . . Jimmy Rollins stole two bases, extending his franchise record streak to 38. He is 24-for-24 this season . . . Pat Burrell has 241 career home runs, leaving him two shy of Chuck Klein on the Phillies' all-time list. *
