The Phillies are trying to make their already formidable bullpen even stronger.
A source close to the situation said the Phillies are trying to acquire Colorado reliever Brian Fuentes, a 32-year-old lefthander who is 1-4 with a 3.50 ERA and 14 saves. He is to earn a little more than $5 million this year.
The Rockies have asked the Phils for righthander Carlos Carrasco or catcher Lou Marson, both of whom are at double-A Reading. They are regarded as two of the club's top prospects.
The Phillies have turned down the offer, but the teams still are talking, the source said.
The Phils have a best-in-the-majors 2.70 bullpen ERA, but they are looking for another lefthander to take some of the load off J.C. Romero.
Marquee matchup
It hasn't received the hype of, say,
Jose Canseco-Vai Sikahema, but a pretty good matchup will be held at Citizens Bank Park today when the Phillies'
Cole Hamels (9-6, 3.18 ERA), who has pitched at least seven innings in his last seven starts, faces Arizona's
Brandon Webb (13-4, 3.27).
Webb, named to the all-star team for the third year in a row, leads the majors in wins.
Ballpark atmosphere
During selected road games, the Phillies' longtime public-address announcer,
Dan Baker, is creating what he calls a "ballpark feel" at Chickie's & Pete's in South Philadelphia.
At the restaurant/bar, Baker, who has been the Phils' P.A. man for 37 years, announces the lineups before the game and before each player's at-bat.
"They turn down the TV sound for a few seconds, and then turn it back on after I announce the names," Baker said. "They want to create a fan atmosphere."
Baker has done six games at the establishment - the events are called "Summer Nights at the Ballpark" - and has others scheduled for Friday, July 23, July 30, Sept. 3 and Sept. 17; he also will do some away postseason games if the Phils get that far.
History lesson
A victory today would give the Phillies sole possession of first place at the all-star break for just the 10th time since the All-Star Game began in 1933.
Extra bases
Shane Victorino, who needed a home run to hit for the cycle Friday, hit two homers in a game yesterday for the first time in his career. . . .
Ryan Howard's hitting streak ended at 14 games. . . .
Pat Burrell's on-base streak ended at 17 games. . . . The Diamondbacks tied a club record with eight runs in an inning. . . . Phillies manager
Charlie Manuel, who said
Chase Utley had a few "knocks and bruises," gave his all-star second baseman the day off. Utley is 0 for 9 against yesterday's starter,
Randy Johnson. He will try to become the third Phillie in the last four years to win the Home Run Derby competition tomorrow at Yankee Stadium.
Bobby Abreu (2005) and Howard (2006) are previous winners. . . . Howard has 28 homers, three shy of the club record at the all-star break.
Mike Schmidt had 31 homers at the 1979 break and finished with 45. . . .
Travis Blackley (5-5), a lefthander at triple-A Lehigh Valley, has seven quality starts in his last eight outings. . . . Despite yesterday's loss, the Phils are 13-7 against National League West teams. . . . Carrasco tossed two scoreless innings Friday night for Reading, but was taken out because he might pitch in today's All-Star Futures Game.
