Sports in Brief: 'Pacman' meets with grand jury

Adam "Pacman" Jones appeared before a grand jury yesterday investigating a 2007 Las Vegas strip club shooting that left a man paralyzed and two others wounded.

The Las Vegas Sun reported that the grand jury questioned the suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback for about 90 minutes behind closed doors.

Jones, 24, had agreed to tell authorities what he knew about the Feb. 19, 2007, shooting in return for an agreement to plead no contest last December to a disorderly conduct charge.

Police accused Jones of inciting a brawl at a strip club minutes before the shooting outside the club on the weekend of the 2007 NBA All-Star Game.

Jones' bodyguard, Robert "Big Rob" Reid, also pleaded no contest to a disorderly conduct charge in the fight inside the club, and was sentenced to one year of probation.

The shooting investigation focuses on a 29-year-old Renton, Wash., man held in a Washington state jail on $1 million bail.

A federal judge has sided with the Washington Redskins in a lawsuit brought by American Indians who consider the team's nickname to be racially offensive.

A U.S. district judge in Washington said the plaintiffs waited too long to bring their case to court.

O.J. Mayo's professional debut featured 15 points, five assists and three steals in the Memphis Grizzlies' 88-75 win over the New Orleans Hornets in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

The former Southern California guard was chosen No. 3 in the NBA draft.

The Minnesota Timberwolves signed first-round draft pick Kevin Love.

The former UCLA player, who left college after his freshman season, will make about $2.6 million this year and $2.8 million next year.

The Toronto Raptors signed Nathan Jawai, the first indigenous player from Australia to be drafted by an NBA team, to a two-year contract.

The 21-year-old was selected in the second round, 41st overall, by the Indiana Pacers in last month's NBA draft. The Pacers included the 6-foot-10 center's draft rights in the deal that sent star forward Jermaine O'Neal to the Raptors.

The Houston Rockets signed free agent Brent Barry to a two-year contract.

Colleges

Notre Dame cornerback Darrin Walls, one of the team's most productive players, will not be enrolled for the fall semester.

Walls started 11 of 12 games in 2007 and tied for the team lead with nine pass breakups.

Notre Dame said only that Walls is gone because of "personal reasons," with Irish coach Charlie Weis saying he hoped for Walls' return in the spring.

Because there do not appear to be legal entanglements, it strongly suggests the matter is a Notre Dame school policy issue. Irish Illustrated, citing unnamed sources, reported that it is an academic matter.

Temple senior Paul Amess was named a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

He is the first player in program history to receive the honor from the GCAA.

Track and field

Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius missed out in another attempt to qualify for the Olympics. The South African was timed in 46.62 seconds while finishing seventh in the 400-meter B race at the Golden Gala meet in Rome. He must run a 45.55 to qualify.
