Flyers captain Smith signed by Senators

The Ottawa Senators signed defenseman Jason Smith to a 2-year, $5.2 million contract yesterday.

The 14-year NHL veteran, an unrestricted free agent, was the Flyers' captain last season and was captain of the Edmonton Oilers the 5 previous seasons.

The Flyers had let Smith know that with the contracts of Randy Jones and newly acquired Steve Eminger, he would not fit into team's budget for next season. Smith earned $1.9 million last season.

Smith led the Flyers with 204 blocked shots and 142 hits in 77 games last season. He had one goal, nine assists and 86 penalty minutes. In his NHL career with the Flyers, New Jersey, Toronto and Edmonton, Smith has 40 goals and 128 assists and 1,052 penalty minutes in 945 games.
