Rutgers, Temple add grid recruits

The Rutgers football program continued its impressive recruiting haul in South Jersey by receiving an oral commitment late Wednesday evening from Woodbury High wide receiver-defensive back Shawnie Kersey.

Also, Temple added two more players to its class of 2009 when quarterback Mark Giubilato of St. Joseph's Prep and defensive tackle Jeffrey Whittingham of Atlantic City orally committed to play for the Owls.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Giubilato, who was a backup at St. Joseph's last season, impressed the Temple coaching staff with his performance during a recent camp. Whittingham is 6-4, 285 pounds.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Kersey said his final choice was between Rutgers and West Virginia.

"Rutgers is close to home, and I think I will be able to help the program," he said.

Last season, Kersey had 28 receptions for 524 yards and three touchdowns while playing in a run-oriented offense. He also had four touchdowns on returns, two on kickoffs and two on punts.

Kersey, who also had 55 tackles and three interceptions on defense, said Rutgers wants him as a receiver.
