Sean Grieve, the former Germantown Academy standout, was selected by the Phillies with the 646th overall pick today.
Grieve, who was named Southeastern Pennsylvania Player of the Year by The Inquirer as a senior in 2004, pitched primarily as a reliever for the College of William&Mary this past season.
The lefty appeared in 31 games his senior season, all as a reliever, saved six games and went 4-1 with a 3.71 ERA.
After going young by picking four 17-year-olds with the team's first nine picks on day one, the Phillies took 11 college seniors in their first 17 picks on the second day.
Five of those eight drafted college seniors are pitchers, including Michael Schwimer (436th overall) from Virginia, who ranked fifth in the nation with 13 saves.
Johnny Coy, the Phillies' first pick on the second day of the MLB first-year player draft, has a basketball scholarship to Arizona State.
The 6-foot-7, 205-pound third baseman/small forward from Benton, Mo., was selected in the seventh round despite not having played very much summer baseball. He's spent most of his time on the AAU basketball circuit, but Phillies personnel made a trip to Missouri on Wednesday for a private workout, according to The News-Press (Mo.).
He's the 26th-ranked small forward in the country by Scout.com.
One intriguing pick was Tyler Cloyd in the 18th round, 556th overall. Cloyd, a two-time North Central Conference pitcher of the year for Division II Nebraska-Omaha, was not enrolled in school this past year because of academic issues.
Villanova shortstop Derek Shunk was taken by the San Diego Padres with the 525th overall pick. And Rowan's Ryan Kulik was the first Division III player selected in the draft, 245th overall, by the Cardinals.
Shawnee pitcher Quintin Miller was taken 594th overall by the Pirates.
