Noahs don't say no

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I present to you an ultimate case of the classic cliche, "Like father, like son."

When former tennis pro Yannick Noah received word that his son, Chicago Bulls forward Joakim Noah, was arrested Sunday in Florida and charged with carrying an open alcohol container and possessing marijuana, well, let's just say his reaction was not one of a typical father.

"I don't understand all that fuss for just drinking a beer in the street," Yannick told reporters yesterday at the French Open.

It isn't as if Yannick set any kind of example - this is the same guy famous for creating a stir a few years before he won the 1983 French Open, telling a magazine writer that he smoked pot on occasion.

As for Joakim, he was released with a court date to appear before a judge. If convicted of the offenses, he could face up to 6 months in jail and a $500 fine for the marijuana charge.

Yannick was preoccupied with the dedication of a walkway at Roland Garros being named after him, but he did take the time to denounce "all the fuss" over a little weed in his son's pocket. Which I guess doesn't make him a bad dad after all.

Futsal fever

Unless you are a devout soccer fan, you've probably never heard of futsal. Futsal is just a fancy Portugese word for indoor soccer. So you should know that the U.S. National Futsal Team named three Philadelphians to its roster for the upcoming CONCACAF Futsal Championship in Guatemala in preparation for the 2008 Futsal World Cup in Brazil this fall.

Kixx players Pat Morris, Ptah Myers and Sandre Naumoski were named to the 12-man roster as the team prepares for first-round play that features Haiti on June 3, Panama on June 4 and Costa Rica on June 5. The top three finishers qualify for the World Cup.

The United States has qualified for World Cup play since the inception of the competition in 1989. The highest finish for the Stars and Stripes? Second place during the Hong Kong games in '92.

You know, just in case you were wondering.
