Captain to clean up

Treading water at 19-19 in the AL East, the Yankees hit on a new plan yesterday. Manager Joe Girardi penciled in Derek Jeter as the cleanup hitter.

The plan stayed on paper, though, when the game in Detroit was rained out.

"He only did it because he knew the game was going to be rained out anyway," quipped Jeter, who has batted cleanup only once in his 14-year career.

Girardi planned to rest Hideki Matsui against Tigers lefthander Nate Robertson, and Alex Rodriguez is on the disabled list.

In 1,990 regular-season and playoff games, the only time Jeter hit fourth was in a loss to the Mets on July 10, 1999, when he went 0 for 4 with an intentional walk.

The eight-time all-star has 4,999 at-bats in the regular season and playoffs batting second, nearly 2,000 as a leadoff hitter and 500-plus at third. The only spot he has not hit in the lineup is fifth.

"If there is a runner on second, I'm still going to try to hit a ground ball to the right side," said the conscientious Jeter. "It doesn't matter if I'm hitting first, second, fourth or whatever."

Hey, Derek: They pay the cleanup guy to hit home runs.

Trivia time

Joe Maddon may be the answer to a trivia question ("Who manages the Tampa Bay Rays?), but he also is a candidate for manager of the year.

The Rays swept the Los Angeles Angels to go five games over .500 (21-16) for the first time in the history of the franchise. It's only an 11-year history, but it's still uncharted waters.

Oops

Well, that didn't last long.

Gavin Floyd, the "feel good" story of the early going, with two near-no hitters after years of struggling to make the majors, got shelled by Seattle.

The Mariners got to Floyd (3-2) for five runs and nine hits over 32/3 innings. Floyd, a former Phillie, entered with a major-league-leading opponents' batting average of .149. He carried a no-hitter into the ninth Tuesday against Minnesota and into the seventh April 12 against Detroit.

Ouch

Manny Ramirez's pursuit of his 500th home run was delayed. The hirsute slugger, who has 497 dingers, had the night off against the Minnesota Twins because of a sore right hamstring. He did enter the game in the ninth as a pinch-hitter, but he grounded out to end the game.

Noteworthy

The Rangers placed former Phillies righthander Kevin Millwood on the 15-day DL with a strained right groin. . . . The Baltimore Orioles purchased the contract of former major-league infielder Alex Cintron from triple-A Norfolk. . . . The Cleveland Indians added veteran outfielder Jason Tyner to their roster from triple-A Buffalo.
