High & Inside: NL Notes

I'm up . . . No, I'm up

This is not to equate the proud Senior Circuit with sandlot ball, but the last time most of us saw anybody batting out of order, we were outside at recess.

After the Cincinnati Reds accomplished the rare miscue in the ninth inning against the Mets yesterday, crew chief Dale Scott said he had never seen it happen in 23 years of umpiring.

Backup catcher David Ross led off Cincinnati's ninth and lined out. But the batter in the No. 8 spot should have been outfielder Corey Patterson, with Ross hitting ninth after an earlier double-switch.

(Patterson was charged with the out and Ross came up again. This time, he singled.)

Reds manager Dusty Baker said the batting order was correct on the dugout board and on his scorecard.

"The guys hit out of order, and it's my job to catch that," Baker said after the 8-3 loss. "So I take full responsibility."

Come on, Skip - quit covering for the millionaires. If they don't know when to bat, they should ask.

Comeuppance

Dallas Cowboys quarterback and former Eastern Illinois star Tony Romo threw out the first pitch at Wrigley Field, where Cubs fans righteously showered him with loud boos.

That's what he gets for dumping a sweetie like Carrie Underwood for that publicity hog Jessica Simpson.

Where's Mitch?

The Milwaukee Brewers demoted Eric Gagne from the closer's role, with mixed results. They won. But it was something out of the Wild Thing playbook.

Holding a 5-2 lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the ninth, Brewers manager Ned Yost handed to ball to Salomon Torres, who coughed up a double, then a walk.

Yost came out again, this time to wave in lefthander Brian Shouse, who gave up an RBI single to Yadier Molina before finally getting the fifth save of his career.

Are you kidding me?

The Chicago Cubs and Arizona Diamondbacks held pampered millionaires Carlos Zambrano (2008 salary, $16 million) and Randy Johnson ($15.1 million) out because of heavy rain, strong winds and temperatures in the 40s in Chicago. The Cubs' Sean Gallagher (an undrafted free agent just recalled from Iowa City) made his first start of the season, and Edgar Gonzalez ($411,000) was allowed to get cold and wet for the D'backs.

Perks of the job

When you've won four World Series, you're entitled to get a little extra back from the grand old game. Actress Pam Anderson threw out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium, then posed for pictures with manager Joe Torre. Nobody booed.

Cooperstown awaits

Greg Maddux beat the Colorado Rockies, 3-2, late Saturday night to become the ninth pitcher to win 350 games. The 42-year-old is 350-217 in 23 big-league seasons.

There are aliens in The X-Files: I Want to Believe, but they are not from outer space.

Instead, they come from Russia: a band of demented medicos, descended on West Virginia to participate in some freaky Frankenstein shenanigans - and that's too bad.

The film reunites David Duchovny with Gillian Anderson. It's been six years since the series signed off, 10 since the first film.
