Phantoms in need of playoff scoring punch

The Phantoms are certainly not the first hockey team to run into a hot goaltender in the playoffs. But at no point in recent memory has merely scoring a goal seemed like such a Sisyphean task as it has over the last two games of the Phantoms' first-round series against Albany goaltender Michael Leighton.

It certainly hasn't been for a lack of effort. The Phantoms have taken 141 shots at Leighton in the last two games alone. One-hundred and thirty-nine of those have ended with a thud as they came in contact with some piece of the goaltender's equipment.

Among the three that did go in was the biggest goal of the season - Ryan Potulny's game-winner 2 minutes, 58 seconds into the fifth overtime of Game 5, which gave Philadelphia a three-games-to-two lead in the best-of-seven series. But the Phantoms came up empty in a 1-0 overtime loss in Game 6, and now they need to find some way to score again in Game 7 of the AHL Eastern Conference quarterfinals, at 7:05 tonight at the Wachovia Center.

The winner will play at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Thursday.

"This is where you make a name for yourself, by coming up big in big games," said rookie winger Kyle Greentree, who had a team-high 17 of the 101 shots in Game 5. "We're just going to play loose and play the way we have been all year, and see what happens."

A key for the Phantoms will be waking up their power play, which carried them through much of the regular season at a success rate of 21.7 percent. In this series, it's clanked along at 9.7 percent, with just three goals in 31 opportunities.

Goalie Scott Munroe has been stellar, though. His shutout of the River Rats lasted 175 minutes and 22 seconds, from the second period of the five-overtime Game 5 to the overtime of Game 6.
