Eagles’ Reid: ‘We’ve got pretty good playmakers’

PALM BEACH, Fla. - Donovan McNabb called on the Eagles to acquire more playmakers. And then Brian Westbrook did the same. And then Jon Runyan.

So coach Andy Reid was asked today what he saw in terms of playmakers when he looks at the Eagles' roster.

"I think we've got pretty good playmakers where we're at, which I think was evident by the results at the end of the season," Reid said early this morning during a media session with the NFC coaches at the NFL owners' meetings. "We kind of went on a bit of a run there and I thought that some of the guys stepped up and played well."

Reid noted the Eagles expect to add more talent during the remainder of free agency and the draft. The Birds' primary offseason acquisitions - cornerback Asante Samuel and defensive end Chris Clemons - have been on defense and not added any help for McNabb on offense.

"Donovan's a team guy and that's the way he is so he'll be fine," Reid said. "I've been in communication with him in the offseason and I think he'll be fine."

Reid also assured that McNabb will be the Eagles quarterback next season. "I'm sure he will be," Reid said.

He said no other team has inquired about McNabb's availability.

"I'm not trying to trade him," Reid said. "Donovan and I talk more than any player that I've got. We always have and I think that's important with a quarterback."

The other pressing issues for the Eagles seem to be the future of Lito Sheppard, in light of the long-term contract signed by Samuel, and the wide receiver position.

On Sheppard's status, Reid said: "Lito's on the team . . . I look at it as Lito's a part of the group and we have a pretty good secondary. The one thing is, Asante's only played one side. Lito's been all over the place. Sheldon [Brown]'s been all over the place, so it gives me a bunch of flexibility right there to mess with those three guys. It'll probably be very similar to when I had Al [Harris], where they all played and they were all starters. I'm not really in the business of keeping everybody happy, I'm in the business of winning games. I think they all want to win and when it's all said and done, that's the primary goal."

On the wide receiver situation and the fans' clamoring for an upgrade: "[The fans] are passionate about that X spot and sometimes that can be a bit overrated, but I understand the want there. I don't necessarily feel the same way, but I understand where they're coming from."
