Villanova ousted by Georgetown, 82-63

NEW YORK - Villanova fell under a barrage of three-point baskets by Georgetown today at the Big East tournament and were defeated by the Hoyas, 82-63, to probably erase any chance of a bid to the NCAA tournament.

The eighth-seeded Wildcats finished the regular season with a 20-12 record and will likely get a bid to the NIT when the invitations are extended on Sunday.

The Hoyas (26-4), the regular season champion of the Big East, tied a conference tournament record with 17 three-pointers on 28 attempts. The record had been set last year by West Virginia.

The Wildcats battled back from a 15-point first-half deficit to take over the lead. Trailing 40-29 at halftime, they outscored the Hoyas 18-3 in the opening seven minutes of the second half to take a 47-43 advantage.

A three-point basket by Corey Stokes put Villanova in front 50-48 with 12:20 remaining. But the Wildcats connected on only two field goals in the next 10 minutes and the Hoyas used an 11-0 run to take over the game once again.

Villanova trailed 65-58 with just over five minutes to play but DaJuan Summers hit a layup and a three-pointer, and Jessie Sapp drained another three-ball, to extend the Georgetown lead to 73-58 with 3:40 to play.

Scottie Reynolds, who took stitches over his right eye after smashing into the basket support with 5:49 left in the first half but returned later, was on the bench for most of the Hoyas' run for further medical attention. He left with 11:09 to play and didn't return until the 3:45 mark.

Reynolds led the Wildcats with 13 points and three players added 12 – Antonio Pena, Dante Cunningham and Dwayne Anderson. The Wildcats shot 33.3 percent from the field and from three-point range (6 of 18).

Sapp led the Hoyas with 23 points while Jonathan Wallace scored 20 points, 19 in the first half when he hit five three-point baskets.
