Right now, Temple (7-12, 1-5 Atlantic 10) is just trying to make sure it isn't one of the two A-10 teams that don't make it to Atlantic City for the postseason tournament.

The next three games are Richmond on the road, followed by La Salle and St. Bonaventure at the Liacouras Center. Three games in which the Owls - who have lost eight of their last nine - could really help themselves. But they might have to play at least one of those games without the A-10's top scorer, Dionte Christmas (21.4 points per game), who has been simply en fuego.

His status for Wednesday is "questionable," a Temple spokesman said yesterday. Christmas suffered a laceration on his left (non-shooting) hand while going after a loose ball with 15 seconds to go in Saturday night's 94-92 loss at Duquesne. He was taken to Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, where he received 17 stitches between his third and fourth fingers. The team, which bused back, waited several hours for him to be treated before heading home.

He is scheduled to see Temple's team doctor, Dr. Ray Moyer, today. A team spokesman said the "wound" is doing fine, and if nothing changes Christmas' status is considered "day-to-day," depending upon how it heals.

Christmas was named the Atlantic 10 co-player of the week yesterday for the second consecutive week and the third time this season. *
