Reid tempers Foles fever

POSTED: Saturday, August 25, 2012, 12:10 AM

CLEVELAND -- It isn't going anywhere. It will only build after Friday night's performance.

Nick Foles fever is sweeping Philadelphia and it is likely to hit a higher pitch after the quarterback turned in another impressive outing in the Eagles' 27-10 win over the Browns in their third preseason game.

Andy Reid hasn't yet named the rookie his backup quarterback, although there seems little reason for the coach not to after Foles delivered a third straight strong game under center. But there are sure to be many Eagles fans that believe Foles is a better option than even starter Michael Vick.

Reid was asked following the game why it may be too early to get excited about Foles.

"For what's been thrown at him, he's handled it well," Reid said. "That other part is the unknown if he has to play in the regular season."

In three games, the rookie has completed 36 of 57 passes (63.2 percent) for 507 yards and six touchdowns against two interceptions. Injuries to Vick and Mike Kafka have given Foles the opportunity to move up the depth chart.

“It’s an opportunity to get better and help my teammates, that’s the only way I look at it,” Foles said. “Like I said before, I’m not worried about two, three, four [on depth chart].”

Vick (bruised ribs) and Kafka (broken left hand) did not travel with the team. Vick left Monday night's game against the Patriots early after he was decked in the mid-section. He is not expected to play in the preseason finale on Aug. 30 against the New York Jets, but Reid said Wednesday that he would be ready by the opener back here on Sept. 9.

"I think he's going to be fine for the first game," Reid said Friday.

Vick told USA Today on Thursday that his ribs were 80 percent healthy and that he was "trying" to get healthy in time for the opener. Reid said Vick and Kafka threw back in Philly. Reid was asked if Kafka, whose backup job appears to be in jeopardy perhaps along with a roster spot, would be ready for the Jets.

"He said he felt pretty good and his hand felt pretty good," Reid said. "We'll have Rick [Burkholder] check him out tomorrow and see where he's at."

With Vick and Foles assured roster spots, the last spot will come down to Kafka and Trent Edwards. Reid said he expects to keep three quarterbacks as he always has.

"I think all four can play -- that's what's comforting," Reid said. "That's going to be a tough decision. Most likely we'll keep three. Somebody's going to get a real good quarterback."

Taking the preseason with a grain of salt, Foles has definitely been a better option than Kafka. Knowing that Vick will miss at least 3 games during the year, if not more, I'm hoping for Foles to get as much experience during the preseason as possible because Kafka isn't an option when it comes to that. At least in my mind.

Foles isn't Reid's type of quarterback. He would start for most NFL teams, but Reid will release Kafka and Edwards and sign Tavares Jackson as backup and let Foles languish as the third string QB even if it means getting fired by Lurie. Bet on it.

Foles is big and strong with a cannon for an arm. Sounds like how you might describe McNabb to me. He was Andy's QB for a decade or so, right? Reid is right, the kid looks good, but it is not the regular season. If he keeps it up, there is avery good chance that he will be the Eagle QB sometime in the future. I don't see it this season, barring a catastrophe. The future does look bright for Foles.

McNabb was more of a runner. Foles is not a running QB but he does seem to be able to scramble well in the more traditional sense. He also knows when to stop hanging onto the ball, which is the downfall of many running QBs. Foles is also about 4 inches taller than McNabb but not as beefy. But he's a big guy who can get bigger. Big is not a bad thing for a QB in today's NFL. Vick and Brees are really the only QBs at the 6 foot level. Vick's fragility is a problem.

mario1239 is blowing his dog whistle; for those unaware of the term, it's when someone publicly states something, usually subtle or oblique, that has meaning to those who agree with their distorted views. In this case, signing Tavares Jackson as backup QB while releasing Kafka and Edwards and pushing Foles to the end of the bench...what do you think it means? Just another ignorant poster camouflaging their bigotry...

North Philly and eaglesonedefense what Mario is saying is that Reid likes athletic qbs like Mc Nabb and Vick. They both move the ball up and down the field but are weak in the red zone. Notice Foles makes quick accurate passes in the red zone. Mc Nabb and Vick are slow to pull the trigger, trying to figure, should I run or throw. Plus Foles is Brady -Roethlesberger tall Qb who stays at home in pocket. Athletic abs DO NOT win super bowls. That's what Mario means

C'mon Andy, listen to the media and the fans; Foles is Joe Montana with bad hair! I mean, c'mon man; he completed 12 passes against the BROWNS in a preseason game. I think in a prior life, he actually invented football; I read it on Philly.com!

i wouldnt be surprised if vick doesnt start in week 1, why start him if he's only 80 percent healthy and not practicing, isnt that telling you something that he might not be ready? it doesnt really matter foles will get his rookie start this season, whenever it is, i would rather use him in the redzone if i was reid, it would actually throw the defense off and he's good in the redzone even if vick is the starter. that's something reid should consider since vick isnt a good a redzone qb.
