The Ritz has brought new color and star chef powerto its staid lobby, with modern pinks and prism glass in a classic marble dome, and star-chef power to the kitchen, with haute bistro cuisine by Eric Ripert from New York's Le Bernardin. There are many fine flavors to be had, but service is still awkward, prices are high, and the menu often feels a bit unambitious given the grandeur of this space.

Rich Podulka and Jason Taylor, who also own North and Next on South Street, have set up the downstairs as a classic pub focused on a DJ booth. The upstairs has a series of rooms for billiards and other games and small private rooms with wraparound couches and small flat-screen TVs. It's located in the former Grape Street Pub.

The idea of opening the only white-tablecloth restaurant in the city of Camden was ambitious enough. But the 20 Horse Tavern, which opened in May with its upscale, high-concept food, lies in a most unlikely setting at Second and Clinton Streets - surrounded by huge warehouses of cocoa beans, a trucking company, a scrap-metal yard, and the mammoth South Jersey Port Corp., handling tons of bulk cargo, from bananas to plywood to steel.
