Majestic. That is the only word that came to mind as I strode toward my seat on the ramparts of the Water Works Restaurant and Lounge. I could hear... » Read more
Cuisine type: European; Mexican
Meals Served:   Brunch  Lunch   Dinner
Style: A quarter-century in the works, fine dining has finally landed at the historic Water Works and its spectacular terraced view of Boathouse Row. It has tremendous promise as a destination, but an inexperienced kitchen struggles to realize an ambitious Medi-Mex menu that ranges from seared watermelon and baked feta to whole fish with mojo.
Specialties: Baked feta; grilled octopus; meatballs; seared watermelon; rack of lamb; whole fish of the day with mojo; house-made ice creams; chocolate truffle cake; strawberry financier.
Alcohol: Small wine list for a restaurant of this scale and pricing. There are some good choices - Chateau de Sales ($56), an Aussie viognier called The Innocent ($40) - but it is full of holes in price points and selection.
Smoking: No smoking, except for terrace.
Hours: Lunch Tuesday-Friday. Dinner Monday-Thursday, 5-10p.m.; Friday and Saturday, until 11 p.m.; Sunday, 4:30-9 p.m. Sunday brunch.

What a surprise!
A group of us dined at the Water Works restaurant tonight and despite the bad review by Craig Laban and various mixed reviews on other food blogs we all had a great time. We were all so enthused with the experience we asked to see the General Manager. Apparently the restaurant has undergone an amazing transition since its opening. The new general manger is a Le Beq Fin alum and he seems to have a firm hand on his business. He was very gracious and gave us his card with cell phone number to call him next time we wanted to come in. We will be back for more and will recommend the Water Works to all our friends and family.

Amazing
Wow! I just had a most wonderful dining experience that I absolutely had to share. This place has come a long way. I first went there when it opened with high hopes but it didn't meet my expectations. One year later it is obvious the restaurant is hitting its stride and getting it right. First, the ambiance continues to be the best in the city and the view is second to none. Second, the food was surprisingly fantastic. I had the grilled halloumi (I think you spell it that way) and my husband had the octopus which was the most memorable part of our first visit. Both were great. Next I had the lobster special which was described as vanilla ouzo poached lobster over basmate rice and Tom had the filet oscar. I can honestly say I had never tasted anything quite like that lobster, it was fabulous although if you don't like licorice flavor it might not be your favorite. My husband described his steak as better than a steakhouse. We shared ouzo bignets (there must be a theme with ouzo) to complete our meal and they were absolutely to die for. The service was equal to the food. Our server and his support staff were attentive and knowledgable. Overall it was one of the best dining experiences I have had in a very long time. I look forward to visiting the Water Works again in the spring or summer to enjoy the outdoors but in the mean time I will savor a wonderful evening.

I like it
I took some colleagues to the Water Works on Tuesday night and had a great time. I have always found the staff to be attentive and eager to please. We had a great meal in the solarium which is the perfect room to impress out of town visitors. We were surprized at the end of the night to learn we had shared the space with Michael Bey, the Transformers director who was in town scouting for transformers 2. He and his party seemed to have a great time as well. I was really shocked that he was eating at the Water Works as I didn't think it was trendy enough for Hollywood types but I guess everyone likes quality once in a while
