Don't read too much into the name, as this South Philly gastropub is a fun place with fun food and prices that are pretty . . . reasonable.
There's sure to be a beautiful story behind a place called The Ugly American, the new South Philly gastropub that revels in dishes like "the garbage plate" and upscale hot pockets.

Style:
The old La Vigna has been transformed into a friendly New American bistro and pub. In-house baking, from biscuits to caraway-seeded "weck" buns, add ambition to an affordable menu of updated bar foods with an Upstate New York twist. Despite some inconsistency, it's a fine "real food" option when visiting the nearby movie complex.
Specialties:
Fried ravioli; shrimp scampi; fried oysters; roast beef on wick; ham and cheese pocket; garbage plate; prime Belvedere steak; pork porterhouse; cheese plate; carrot cake; fudgy brownie sundae.
Alcohol:
Craft beers are a focus here, with a basic selection of local and domestic brews that should grow. There's also a small selection of affordable domestic wines, from Dr. Frank New York Dry Riesling ($48) to 14 Hands Washington cab ($33/$8).
Hours: Dinner Sunday-Wednesday, 5-10 p.m.; Thursday-Saturday, until 11 p.m.; Sunday brunch, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
