Style: This classic Chester County barn-market for doughnuts and pumpkins has morphed into a more ambitious gastro- destination under new ownership, with house-smoked barbecue at the casual market by day and elaborate tasting menus for private parties at a 22-seat chef's table by night. Rob Boone, an alum of Charlie Trotter's and Striped Bass, has shown flashes of bright promise at the tastings, which make for an intimate fine-dining event.
Specialties: Seasonal menus always change, but past hits include mushroom soup with scallops; scallops with couscous, pumpkin and pomegranate; smoked salmon over pickled-beet puree; Chilean sea bass with porcinis and cream; smoked beef strip; smokehouse pork and venison; chocolate and espresso creme. Market menu: barbecue brisket; chicken potpies; smoked salmon.
Alcohol: The nine-course tasting menus range widely, from delicate seafoods through lightly smoked meats, so bring both white and red (avoid anything overly dense with dark fruit).
Hours: Chef's Table dinners available Tuesday-Saturday, seating at 6:30 p.m. Market kitchen, Monday-Thursday, 6:30 a.m.- 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, until 9 p.m.; Sunday, 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Reservations required for Chef's Table. Plan well ahead.
