The South Street cantina, with its upscale take on authentic flavors, fills the niche between old-style taqueria and full-on nuevo.
Back when Michelle Zimmerman and Carlos Molina were falling love in the kitchen of Tequila's, where he was chef and she washed dishes, the local Mexican landscape was as barren as the Sonoran Desert.

Cuisine type: Mexican
Meals Served:
Dinner
Style:
Former Tequila's chef Carlos Molina and his wife, Michelle Zimmerman, have opened a charming storefront eatery dedicated to traditional Mexican cooking. The cozy, bright-yellow space is a personal ode to vintage Mexi-cinema. The menu uses good ingredients in dishes that reflect refined authenticity, rather than creativity.
Specialties:
Alcohol:
There are a few inexpensive South American wines by the glass, typical Mexican beers (including a refreshing Dos XX lager on draft), and a very nice collection of premium tequilas. The mixed drinks were dicey.
Weekend noise:
Close quarters can quickly hit a boisterous 85 decibels (ideal is 75 decibels or less).
Hours: Dinner Sunday, Tuesday through Thursday, 4-10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, until 11 p.m.
Prices:
