Frankford Hall: Rolling out the barrel in Fishtown

Tuesday, May 17 marks the debut of Frankford Hall, Stephen Starr's interpretation of a German beer garden, on Frankford Avenue just north of Girard in Fishtown.

Yes, Starr in Fishtown -- valet parking and all (it's $6).

Stokes Architecture basically had a crew bang out the brick interior of an industrial building to create the rooms, and create a large courtyard covered in gravel for outdoor seating. Garage doors separate the inside and outside. The space teems with reclaimed industrial metals. There are two ping-pong tables, a space for bands, and a screen for a projection TV that will air only Phillies games.

Food is ordered from a walk-up counter. Three bars are available.

Many German beers will wash down the wursts (including brats, weisswurst, krakauer, kasekrainer, and knockwurst). Two more substantial dishes (roasted chicken and Jager Schnitzel) are on the menu, which is here.

Hours: 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. weekdays, noon to 2 a.m. weekends.

some of these comments are from the long term fishtown residents who dislike people that have high school diplomas a full set of teeth and the ability to read all the words in this article

There is good and bad in all developments. In general, this is a good thing for its neighborhood and Philadelphia. We shouldn't be picky when it comes to what types of restaurants/shops open in the city. We need new development. Good for Stephen Starr. Now we need other people opening up shop.

Passyunk Square? Opened your fron door lately. You've got a skinny jeans, fixie bike, ironic moustache infestation over there..And no parking..And Marge Tartaglione. Quadruple fail!

Passyunk Square? Opened your front door latley? You've got a skinny jeans, fixie bike, ironic moustache infestation over there and its only getting worse. AND no parking..AND Marge Tartaglione..Quadruple fail! See? I can jealously hate on another part of town too. Grow up, dude. I've lived all over this city, and at 45, I don't think I qualify as a hipster geek..But I'd much rather have them in my neighborhood than you any day.

Yeah, this place will probably fail just like other Fishtown bars such as Johnny Brendas, Kraftwork and Memphis Taproom did. Remember when those places were open and thriving? Wait...nevermind.

Only in Philly can we turn the opening of a 5 Star Establishment in a "ressurecting" neighborhood into a irrational argument over skinny jeans, Coors Lt. vs. craft beer, and dental work. Can't we just be happy that people are making efforts to avoid us becoming eastern Detroit.
