German food isn't sexy, unless the thought of liver dumplings and pig knuckles gets you all in a bother to go for a hot polka. So I guess it's little wonder that Bavaria hasn't yet inspired contemporary American chefs quite in the same way France, Italy, Spain, and Asia have.

Brush up your umlauts over a glass of Köstritzter and a meter of house-made Nürnberger brats at this hopping new South Street bier hall, where Philly's dwindling German tradition has gotten a welcome (albeit noisy) revival. The menu is traditionally heavy but authentically tasty and well-made. The beer list offers the city's most comprehensive German selection. And don't let the kitschy dirndls fool you - these well-versed fräuleins are some of the best bar servers in town.

The city's finest German beer selection is offered on 20 rotating drafts with greats like Ayinger, Spaten, Weihenstephan, and Schneider Aventinus, covering most classic styles. About 80 bottle choices with more international focus cover the rest. So much more, though, could be done with the tiny wist list.
Weekend noise:
You won't be able to hear much amid the thunderous 98-decibel roar of the weekend drinkers. Midweeks are relatively quieter, a still-noisy 87 decibels. (Ideal is 75 decibels or less.)
Hours: Lunch daily, 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Dinner Sunday through Thursday, 5-10:30 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, until 11 p.m. Late-night menu nightly until midnight.
