The vibrant flavors of Cambodia - spicy, sour, funky and fresh - are presented with home-cooked care at this family-run BYOB in South Philadelphia's growing Southeast Asian enclave. The little corner room is modest but tidy, and the friendly service can often be slow. But the uncompromisingly genuine (and affordable) menu of bracingly sour soups, bitter flower salads and exotic, authentically complex sauces are absolutely worth a visit. Cash only.
Nyoum Sadau (bitter melon flower salad); Phrah-Hok Katheeth (caramelized ground pork with crudite); salt-baked shrimp; Cha Mareh Prov (basil sauteed chicken); Pleah Sak-Koe (lime-marinated steak salad); Salaw Machue Kre'ung (sour soup with chicken or beef and tripe); Salaw Ka-Koe (pumpkin and roasted rice soup); Sak-Koe Ang' (grilled steak with fish paste sauce); grilled meatball skewers; curried mussels.
BYOB. Try a crisp lager to tame the spice, or a tart saison ale to match the herbaceous fare.
Hours: Entire menu Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sunday, until 8 p.m. Closed Monday.
