Eagles pick tight end Zach Ertz

Defense is what the Eagles needed, not another Danny Watkins & Clay Harbor. Johnson at number 4 is way too high for a guy that played the position for two years. Ertz could be a great player, but when you have no safeties, no corners and maybe one linebacker, you don't spend that much on a "raw" tackle at number 4 and you don't have the luxury of spending a 2 on another tight end that doesn't block. Bennie Logan is just a "depth" pick. Can't give Howie and company more than a "C" for this draft so far, not when there were good defensive players that could have been had. Defense is what wins in the NFL, and this is another 4 or 5 win team. Chip Kelly will be back in College ball in three years and maybe he can take Howie with him.

The first thing that Aron needs to do is fire Tony DiLeo and anyone else that pushed for the Bynum trade. And the six (6) doctors that said Bynum was ok to play?? They should have their licenses revoked. JL

They are no closer now than when they had Andy Reid. They now have TWO unqualified people at the top, Howie Roseman at GM and now a College Coach trying to run a gimmick offense that will be gone soon enough, after it destroys the careers of a few good quarterbacks. We've already seen what happened to RGIII. Chip Kelly will be back in College within three (3) years and if we're lucky, Howie will be gone sooner. JL

Please, of the list of "core" players you rattled off, you included Brandon Graham? I know he was hurt early on, but look at his career stats. Just the "total games played", it doesn't say snaps but just the total. In 26 games he has 31 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Are you kidding me? This from the 13th player picked in the draft? He's a stiff, he's a stiff now, and a stiff no matter who he plays with or who he plays for. Buddy Ryan couldn't make a player out of this guy; he should change his name to Brandon Mamula.

No, they can't win in Boston. Well, maybe they can, like the Eagles can win the Super Bowl, or the Flyers can win the Stanley Cup. Mathematically, on paper, or in the mind of an odds maker, they CAN win because the numbers say that it is statistically possible that they can win. But they won't. They had a good run, but they are where they are because they won over a beaten up Chicago Bulls team. Yes, they are playing well, and some of their young players have a bright future, but they don't have enough juice to win a game seven in Boston. Very few teams do; look at the "numbers", they don't lie. Boston 87 - Sixers 76.

Don't insult the memory of Jim Johnson; Juan Castillo is an embarrassment as defensive coordinator. He has no business being in the position. His hiring is just another peg in the final dismissal of Andy Reid

He did not have a solid rookie season before he got hurt. Look at his numbers, he had thirteen (13) tackles and one (1) sack!! Thirteen tackles!! He could barley get on the field. He would have been a solid pick... in the late second round. As it is, he's right about himself, he is a bust.

Brandon Graham is just another in the ongoing problems that Eagles Front Office has in picking defensive players. I hope the Fletcher Cox doesn't wind up in that category but I wish Graham well, because he has no future with the Eagles or any other 4-3 defensive team for that matter. He belongs on a 3-4 playing linebacker. We could have had Earl Thomas or Jason Pierre-Paul, but we wind up with another Mike Mamula or Jerome MacDougal. Thank you Howie, thank you very much.

They can't play! They are special teamers at best. Nate Allen was an ok player before he got hurt, now he's a special teamer that doesn't tackle. Jarret, please, he's another player drafted in the second round that should have gone in the sixth round, another special teamer.
Demico Ryan ISN'T rehabbing, he just isn't the same player, no player that has to run for a living will be the same after an achilles tear. That's just reality. Ryans is probably better than who they already have, but the excuse that he was playing out of position is just that an excuse. 9 & 7 if they're lucky.

This is the same Howie Roseman that signed all of the dream team players last year right? The same guy who drafted Brandon Graham (can't play, and couldn't play even before he got hurt), the same guy who drafted Daniel Teo 'Naisham (lasted one season, never played), The same guy who drafted Nate Allen, the same guy who drafted Jaquan Jarret? None of these guys can play!
I sure hope that Fletcher Cox can play; one expects that drafted that high he would be able to but who knows. Everybody thought that Jerome McDougle was a sure thing. How'd that work out? Mychal Kendricks could turn out to be a great player, but he could just as easily be hurt all of the time because he's pretty small.
How come the NY Giants always seem to be able to stay in the mix even when the have major injuries like they did last year? Because Jerry Reese is a solid personnel GM, not a contract manager.
We're all drinking the Koolade again, they might as well just ship the Lombardi Trophy right to Howie's office, we're a shoe in to win the Super Bowl aren't we. 9 & 7 if they're lucky and if they want to get to the Super Bowl, they should buy ticket early.
Bob Ford: For better or for worse, Asante Samuel is gone

The Asante Samuel Era with Eagles is over, and just like the Chris Clemons Era, Jevon Kearse Era, Mark Simoneau Era and on and on, it just shows how bad the talent evaluation is for the Eagles. They spend $$ on either over the hill free agents or just plain over value them. Domo wrote an article yesterday defending the Eagles Front Office. Shame on him for trying to suck up to Howie Roseman and do his job and call it what it is, a "fantasy league" department. I would have more respect for him if he did that. Bob, I like and read your column regularly, please keep it real.
The Eagles are going nowhere until they get a solid front office; send Howie back to doing contracts, he's good at that. Send Andy Reid back to being a quarterbacks coach, he's good at that. Neither one of them can draft players or evaluate free agents beyond the "C minus" range, and that will never win you a Super Bowl, the only thing left that this organization hasn't done.

If Trevor Laws is gone (and should be) there's another bust of a high pick on the defensive side of the ball. Way to go Front Office Staff (Andy & Howie, and a little former GM Tom Heckert), way to pick those "high motor" guys who just can't play. In 57 career regular season games, he had 45 tackles, 12 assists and 5 sacks. Are you kidding me? What a stiff, another second round pick that was a total waste.

I have always enjoyed your column, I have found you to be an informed writer and an honest one. That said, you can't be serious.
Howie Roseman is nothing more than a cap lawyer, and that is all that he will ever be. The next great player that he drafts will be his first. He consistently misses on first round picks, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. He should go back to being Joe Banner's assistant and leave personnel evaluating to the professionals. I wonder what their "War Room" will be like this year without Brian Grigson.

He's damaged goods. Nobody comes back from an achilles and is 100% of what they were and the Eagles are kidding themselves if they think otherwise. If he stays healthy, great, but he will be slower than he was, that's just the nature of the injury. Is he better than what they already have? Probably, but it just shows how little regard the Eagles have for the LB position. It's a $6 million gamble, and if it doesn't work out, they can get out of it after one year. I just wish they would pony up in this year's draft and get a few studs at LB. Won't happen, but it should.

Bummer, we could have been rid of Andy. Too bad, not a bad coach if you want to win 9 games or so and choke in the playoffs every year, especially since the days of Jim Johnson and Ray Rhodes's defensive players. Not a bad GM if you want someone that misses more than he hits when it comes to picking players. Overall, the perfect guy if you want to be just an average coach and gm and never win a championship.
Jaworski: Eagles should pursue Mario Williams
- 1 out of 25 total comment(s)
Tue., 03/13/12 - 18:07 PM
I agree that they can't afford Mario Williams but the Eagles have anything BUT a deep defensive line rotation. You have Cole, Babin and Jenkins and that's about it.
Patterson is an average at best player that is coming off a serious surgery and is in his seventh season; he's an old 28. Graham is a bust, you can hope all you want. He had 12 tackles in 13 games with one sack before he got hurt; he couldn't get on the field. Hunt is a CFL player that belongs in the CFL. Dixon is a backup and that's where he belongs, as a back up. Laws has been a stiff since the day he was drafted, Parker is over the hill and probably won't make the team and Landri, who knows.
Not deep at all and I hope they address defensive line, particularly at tackle, in the draft. No need to even mention linebacker, we know they don't value LB very much.

Too bad Howie Roseman isn't going with him. Given the poor to average drafting by the Eagles, I wish that they would clean house in the front office, starting with Roseman, and bring in a bonafide football person to run the show. Let Joe Banner handle the $$ and let the new person take full control of personnel, Andy Reid would be like Tom Coughlin or any other coach. Andy and Howie's track record speaks for itself.
It won't happen, at least not until after next season, when Andy Reid will be gone after another wasted season. They will be forced to blow it up and start all over; hopefully with a real personnel pro to run the football operation.

It is a shame that Winston Justice has a knee injury. Hopefully, he will have the procedure and be able to play at some point. With the CBA situation, his rehab could be an issue for him. I hope that Dr. Andrews does the operation, his reputation has him at the top of the profession.
That said, Justice is an average player, playing arguably the most important position on the offensive line. He's protecting Michael Vick's blind side as a left handed QB. The Eagles really needed to upgrade that position anyway; King Dunlop is less of a player than Justice so it looks like once again, the Eagles first round pick will be an offensive tackle. More likely, they will drop out of the first round to get more picks.
Its just another example of how "average" the Eagles are at drafting players. No depth on the offensive line, particularly at the tackle position. Vick will be running for his life again this season.
Could the Eagles pursue another star CB?

Joe Banner, all he does is repeat the same drivel every year. "They have lots of cap room to do what they want.... and on and on and on". All of the cap room in the world won't change the fact that the personnel people, Andy Reid and now Howie Roseman, are average at best in evaluating talent. I guess there are worse coaches than Andy and he seems like nice man, but neither he nor Howie Roseman should ever be allowed to pick another player, period. Howie should go back to analyzing contracts or whatever other legal matters he worked at before. The Eagle will never win the Super Bowl unless they get a solid personnel professional to run the player selection and scouting departments. It just won't happen though, because the Eagles Front Office doesn't have a clue that while they manage the salary cap well and show huge profits to the owner, they are clueless when it comes to the real football side, and that's the players.
5 thoughts: Eagles go with Castillo

Let's see, take a coach that has never called a game as a defensive coordinator, hasn't coached defense in the NFL, last coached defense in high school, oh, and in the last season coached an offensive line that gave up 49 sacks, the fourth worst in the league, (two teams below them were tied at 50 and the last place team had 56) and then promote him. I definitely wanted Sean McDermott fired because while he may become a good defensive coordinator some day, he looked in over his head. The second coach I wanted fired was Juan Castillo. All that I've heard is how great an offensive line coach that he is, yet his players always look unprepared and constantly take stupid penalties. Jason Peters is a holding penalty waiting to happen and Winston Justice is a false start waiting to happen. This looks like another story of the Eagles going for the low priced, bargain basement, selection. Maybe the silver lining in this is it will hasten the departure of Andy Reid, who seems like a really nice man that is loyal to his coaches and players but who will never win a Super Bowl, the only thing that really matters.
Don't be fooled - Reid and Eagles have a plan

As long as Andy Reid and the current personnel team are picking the players, the Eagles will never win a Super Bowl, the only thing that they have not been able to do, ever. All the 4-3, 3-4 scheme talk is a waste of time, because it is about the players they pick, or don't pick in their case, that is the bottom line. Andy seems like a nice man, but it is time for a change, especially in the talent evaluation and selection department. They need a true football man in charge of that area, the position of coach & personnel manager has to be separated, period.
I think that Howie Roseman should go back to what he does best and that is on the contract and salary cap side, not player evaluation. A new and fresh approach from a solid personnel man from outside the organization with his choice of scouts is needed.
