Bill Lyon: Sack greats have come in all styles

I hate reading Bill Lyon's columns. They remind me of how good reading the Inky's sports section used to be and how badly lacking today's sports "bloggers" are. And now, the last decent sports writer in town has demons... Thank you Mr. Lyon, for coming back to give us the occasional taste of excellent sportswriting, and by comparison, making the remainder of reading the daily sports "page" an aggravating, insatiable compulsion.

The Patriots are "sounder?" The way some of these writers write, they should be embarrassed. Where have you gone Bill Lyon, Frank Dolson, et al?

I hate everything about that baseball team by the freak bay city and Bochy just adds to it. It's gamemanship on his part. He knew they didn't want Doc pitching, so naturally, he starts him. And leaving Cholly off his staff is a bit of a snub as well.

It's curious that even on a fan message board, people are afraid to call this guy "Ed." I loved how in last week's interview with Pat Croce, when asked about the Sixers, he refers to the previous owner as "Ed" and the incoming owner as "Mr. Harris." Subtle. Purposeful. Nice.

Richards wonders why the ref would not give him the explanation he wanted after Carcillo's penalty. They don't respect your "C" Mike, and neither do your teammates.

Can't imagine them letting Pete Happy go for the likes of Beltre, Polanco or Derossa. Figgins or bust.

nobody in Philly or New York was happier to see the Phils lose to the Yankees than Laurie and Banner.

Now that the Phillies Season is over, the top sports attraction in town now is Phillies Offseason Moves. Eagles are going nowhere until Laurie decides to cash out and while the Flyers have a shot thie year, am I the only one tired of Mike - "I'm not talking to the media, I like Sid Crosby and consider him a good friend" - Richards? I miss the days of Rechi, Roenick, Primeau, Tochet, Hextall, etc. Save for Pronger, these guys are too d___ fragile.

Now Mike Richards proclaims he won't talk to the media. I've been a Flyers junkie all my life, but am I the only one tired of this guy's attitude? I'm finding it hard to embrace this team like teams of past.

Time to give Haap a start. Beyond his good stuff, Yankee scouts have not seen him (as much). A game day decision could leave them little time to study him.
Thu., 10/22/09 - 08:48 AM
If Hamels was tipping, the team would know it. Nobody studies pitchers like Utley and you can be sure he studies the Phils staff as well, for this purpose.
