Inside the Flyers: Slumping Flyers put Holmgren on the hot seat

Okay, I stand corrected. I found the 7/9/13 post, a response to another post. It does say "could" and not "would".
But seriously, FlyerFan4Life is not the enemy. When he gets going on Cyndi and the PenQueens he is side-splitting hilarious.
Take the high road.
I had an assignment in Houston a couple years back. Humidity was positively stifling...coming from a place where, on average, the humidity is about 19% (it's a desert) it was hard to breathe.
Go Flyers. Please...

At least one post was from this username. I clicked on Philly.com while in Facebook. I think the others were from my Twitter login. I'm getting confused with all these log-in names. I'll look.

backhand here under my original log-in. Long story.
Number one: It's good to see a post from you that isn't negative.
Number two: The deflection off Simmonds skate was exactly what the Flyers need. I don't care if every goal they score gets deflected off anyone's body parts or equipment. As long as it goes in, it counts. Tampa Bay got two goals that went in off Flyers' sticks and they counted, and they were not Leighton's fault.
And Lundqvist is the type of goalie that you need deflections and greasy goals to score on him.
I think there will be a "Come To Jesus" meeting before Tuesday's game and maybe it will mitigate the lethargy that has come over the Flyers.
Mon., 01/28/13 - 20:34 PM
" I hoped you liked my response to his doctor analogy...."
Yes, I did. Hard to argue with that logic.
I went back and watched the Center Ice recording. I specifically looked for Couts on Stamkos. Damn, I hate it when I'm wrong. Your observation about lack of confidence seems to fit his play against Stamkos. Don't know why, he smothered Crosby last year. Stamkos is good but he's no Crosby
I FINALLY figured out how to log-in under my old screen-name: Through Facebook. I forgot the password and couldn't log-in to it here. Had to create a new account.

N.B. I may log-in accidentally as backhand since I have the browser set to fill in username and password from the cache and I can't just delete it without deleting the entire cache. APologies in advance.

Wayne Simmonds is one tough customer. In a fight with Avery Simmonds would definitely take him. We saw a lot of Simmonds out here in Orange County, CA. He's no goon, he actually is a very good puck-handler and isn't afraid to go into the corners or stand in front of the net. I'd much rather watch him display those skills than have him stoop to Avery's level, but if Avery presses the issue Sean better hope he has adequate health insurance.

retzlaff, how many who post here know who Marshal McCluhan is, or what he was saying in that famous quote?
But your point is well taken. It was a slow news day for Hofman. Why pass up a chance to pontificate?

BTW, the referee signal for a two minute minor for "Slurring" is sticking out the tongue. The signal for a five minute major for "Slurring" is sticking out the tongue, combined with putting the thumbs in the ears and wagging the outstretched fingers. Players receiving a 5 minute major for "Slurring" also receive an automatic game misconduct and a review of the incident by Hockey Operations.
Tue., 09/27/11 - 21:33 PM
Clever, dasher, very clever. Funny too. Let's see how many figure out that double entendre.

Are you a combat veteran? If not, please spare us the melodramatic sophistry.
Dick Cheney invoked the "forefathers" at every opportunity, yet when the time came to put his life on the line "To support, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States" he asked for and recieved 6 draft deferments. It was only AFTER the war ended that he became a tough guy.
And yes, I'm a combat veteran:
Tue., 09/27/11 - 19:42 PM
"you might offend someone like 1980 who thinks anyone who calls the media liberal is a right wing nut job."
Every right-wing nut job uses the term "liberal media" so it's not beyond the realm of possibility that someone who uses that term to refer to a free press is automatically perceived as a right-wing nut job, whether they are or are not.
In this context (the alleged homophobic insult directed at Saint Sean Avery), the media has over reacted (IMHO) and seem more concerned about verbal insults than cheap shots to the head. If Hoffman got as worked up over head shots he might find a more receptive audience. I play ice hockey, and personally I'd much rather have someone insult my heritage than have them run me from behind. Insults are forgotten, stitches leave scars.
The warning label sewn onto every piece of hockey protective equipment states "Hockey is a violent sport...". Gee, no kidding?
Tue., 09/27/11 - 13:07 PM
I'm don't understand what Hoffman is suggesting in the interview. And I don't understand his statement that "they [hockey players] need to live in our world". Does Mr. Hoffman truly believe that racist and gender-related slurs do not occur frequently in "our world"? If so he needs to get out of the press box now and then and sit in the cheap seats, or on the glass.
My personal take on this "incident" is that Avery is taking advantage of the banana-throwing incident in London, Ontario, and falsely accusing Simmonds of slurring Avery. I don't know how many actually heard it, but somehow the audio of the TV broadcast on NHL Network picked up Avery using some choice four-letter words directed at Simmonds, long before the "incident" in question. The Comcast announcers actually apologized for allowing the audio to be broadcast.
I believe Avery as far as I could throw him. He's a talentless thug with serious psychological issues.
But I can see the PC crowd pressuring the NHL to come up with a two minute minor for "Slurring", which, at the referees discretion, can be a major if the "slur" is truly hurtful, or draws blood.

In case it wasn't clear, I generally agree with that post, and the others you put up elsewher in response to other articles. My point was that the punishment should fit the crime (or "Provincial Offense" in this case) and to have a little fun with that aspect.
If a public stoning is in order, Avery should be the target. But only if stones minedin the US are used: No imported rocks.

You think "Liberals" are fags, yet during the Vietnam War Conservatives avoided military service in droves by obtaining specious deferments (See Dick Chaney bio, he had six of them), and then after the draft ends they blame "Liberals" for losing the war! That's wimpy. And cowardly, like the chump who threw the banana.
And ice hockey is NOT basically fighting on ice. You obviously don't follow the game, nor have you ever played the game.
Wed., 09/28/11 - 13:56 PM
Prior to every hockey game they make an announcement that throwing anything on the ice will subject you to removal from the venue and possible arrest.
In the case of hats and squid, they make an exception because the intent there is not to injure a player or disrupt the game, and both of those acts have become traditions cherished by the league and fans.
Do you really think that someone carrying a 32lb squid to a Red Wings game would get it through security otherwise? What, the fan is going to eat it between the first and second periods to avoid paying the predatory concession prices?
No, sorry, I agree with Dicky Dunn (see below): this act was premeditated by a single hateful individual.
Wed., 09/28/11 - 12:59 PM
Good for the London, Ontario police. And kudos to the witnesses who turned him in. That gutless wonder manged to briefly unfairly tarnish the reputation of a fine city. According to the 2012 NHL Rulebook, section 68.1, paragraph "A":
"The deciding factor concerning whether a player injury shall be reported as "Upper body" or "Lower body", is whether it is above or below the belly button."
Paragraph "B" further states:
"In the case of players lacking a belly button, the injury shall be reported as a "boo-boo."
I hope this clears that up.

I don't understand why anyone would sit in seats 100 yards from the ice in a football or baseball stadium to watch a hockey game. I understand that the NHL has intentionally surrounded these "Winter Classics" with manufactured cache, but come on folks, you can see more watching it on NBC. And there is a reason that they moved hockey games indoors a long time ago: It's freakin' cold out in January.
However, I'm glad it's in Philly this year.

Shelley suspended; Hyka goes to juniors

Fri., 09/23/11 - 00:02 AM
Pete, you think Shelley is the 4th best forward on the Flyers roster, or the best forward on the 4th line? Either way I have to disagree.
Thu., 09/22/11 - 23:59 PM
Brendan Shanahan replaced Colin Campbell as the NHL vice-president of Hockey Operations and Chowder Society. He is the one now making decisions on player suspensions and runs the War Room in Toronto for video reviews.
Shanahan played for the Rangers, Devils, Whalers, Blues, and Red Wings. He played right wing. In 1,524 NHL games he scored 656 goals and had 698 assists for a career total of 1,354 points. He also racked up 2,489 minutes in penalties so he was no wall flower.
Thu., 09/22/11 - 23:46 PM
It was a stupid move on Shelley's part and a suspension was certainly appropriate, but 10 games? If Matt Cooke does that he gets 3 games.
I'm beginning to believe that those here calling for Shelley's permanent departure may have a point. That was a PRESEASON game Jody.
The Flyers wasted no time in sending Hyka back to juniors. I would have preferred to see him play more games with the big club.

Michael, I firmly agree with you with respect to Matt Walker over Lilja, who played out here for the Ducks. Although steady and hardworking, nobody in OC will miss him.
And you're right, Emery's issues were with Ottawa management. I have not read a single thing that indicates he had any issues with anyone while playing for the Flyers.
Look for Wayne Simmonds to continue to play well and contribute (he played well for theKings), as well as Braydon Schenn. I was surprised that L.A. let Schenn go in the Richards deal.

Second, does anyone have links (FlyerFan4Life ?) to the material concerning the alleged partying of Richards and Carter? I seemed to have missed all of that as a result of watching them play hockey. The reason I ask is I would like to read whatever is out there and attempt to determine whether there is any factual reporting that would shed light on the issue of whther they were party animals first, and hockey players second or not. BTW, the photo link posted by FlyerFan4Life at least shows the two have decent taste with respect to women.
Thanks in advance for any pointers.
Finally, I have to agree with the comment by Blvd Al: "I think it's a great time to be a Flyer fan and I'm looking forward to an exciting season." Ditto.

General, don't they have to be dead before you can bury them at sea? :)
Wed., 05/04/11 - 06:49 AM
The Flyers have not had a single shutout this year (the only NHL team not to get a shutout) not because of substandard goal tending, but because of defensive lapses by forwards and defencemen. The current dilemma they find themselves in actually started back in mid-February, and matured throughout the month of March.
Hockey is a team game, and all too often the Flyers go through stretches where they seem to forget that fact. This has caused them have to play seven games against Buffalo in order to advance to the semis. The first two games against Boston have shown that Boston is a better TEAM. The Flyers may have better individual players at each position, but the Bruins have played better as a team.
Much as it pains me to say this, the Flyers will not get past this round. They may win won game from the Bruins, but that's it. It's just as well because they could never beat Vancouver, much less Tampa Bay.
The blame for this predicament falls squarely on the shoulders of the forwards, the D-Men, and the head coach for not figuring out a strategy to battle the malaise that has hung over the Flyers like a cloud since February.

Carter hasn't contributed much when he was in the lineup. This is not a case of one missing player making a difference. This descent into mediocrity started in late February, and it's a team issue that's not likely to change for the better anytime soon. Flyers may win one game, but it's highly unlikely they will win four of the last five.

Kris Versteeg needs to be a healthy scratch for game 2. His play was appallingly poor in this game.
Just finished watching Nashville defeat Vancouver in double overtime. The difference between the Predator's effort and the Flyers lack of effort was very apparent.
Flyers work all year to get home-ice in the second round and then blow it in game one. While it's true they seem to play better on the road, you can't win a series where you have home-ice by winning only the road games.

There are only a small number of goalies that could step in immediately and offer substantially better performance than they are getting now. But to get a playoff-caliber goalie the team would have to shed payroll overhead, and that would mean moving some high priced talent. And that my friends high-priced talent are for the most part players adored by heek if this team were dusbanded.Flyer Fans. Flyers force Game 7
- 2 out of 91 total comment(s)
Mon., 04/25/11 - 01:22 AM
The analysts on NHL On The Fly are speculating that Mike Richards will be suspended for game 7 because of the 2 minute boarding minor he was assessed in game 6 for pushing Tim Connoly into the boards.
In defending his decision not to suspend Vancouver's Raffi Torres Colin Campbell said:
"This hit meets none of the criteria that would subject Torres to supplemental discipline, including an application of Rule 48: He did not charge his opponent or leave his feet to deliver this check,” NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell said in a statement to NHL.com. “He did not deliver an elbow or extended forearm and this hit was not 'late'."
That description applies to Richards play in game 6 as well since he did not charge Connoly, did not leave his feet to deliver the hit, and did not deliver a blow to the head. But rules get applied differently against the Flyers all too often.
Sabre coach Lindy Ruff and goalie Ryan Miller whined pitifully in their post-game press conferences. Both seem to be looking to get an edge in game 7 by encouraging Colin Campbell to suspend Richards.
We can always hope Campbell will do nothing, but don't hold your breath.

Sat., 04/23/11 - 06:21 AM
The question posed by Philly.com's version of Woodward and Bernstein is: "Will the Sabres Win Game 6?"
Now the only two rational answers to this question are "Yes" and "No". In that regard this is essentially a poll. Given the large number of Buffalo trolls posting here, not to mention the legions of disaffected Flyers fans, my guess is that a slight majority of the responses will be "Yes, Buffalo Wins Game 6". Now how does this affect each side in the debate?
Buffalo people will go back to standing in line for unemployment benefits, food-stamps, free medical clinics, and bread lines.
Philly people will watch Phillies games, go downashore, maybe do a little gambling, lay on the sand and get sun burn, and maybe look for Snooki so they can cross-check her in the head. Pretty much the world will go on as usual.
And then Buffalo will have to go on to the next round where the next team will have ONE goalie, no internal dissension in the Room, and a wealth of very talented high scoring players. Sabres will loss four straight and Buffalo will go back to shoveling snow, sprinkling salt and hoping their baseball team will win What? Oh, they don't have a
baseball team. You're getting the drift here. Nothing much will change, and the world will go on. A lot of angst over nothing.

Carcillo was pushed into Miller, which, in and of itself, should have been a penalty for interference since Carcillo did not have the puck and wasn't the last one to touch the puck. Miller's response was cowardly he's got a mask on), as was the Sabre D-man who hit Carcillo when he was down.

You make good points, but I think you need to address your comment about "City bashing" to your fellow Buffalo fans. You can't make a case that any of them are here to comment on the hockey game, they are here simply to hurl insults.

Carcillo is perhaps the most under-rated player the Flyers have. When he is on his meds, he stick handles well, gets to open ice, and makes crisp passes. For a tough guy, he's a remarkably good all around hockey player.
Now if we can just make certain he takes his meds...

The one consistent feature of every one of the posts from the Buffalo trolls is their adolescent nature. They can't seem to post a single message without insulting people. When someone resorts to ad hominem rhetoric it's pretty certain it's because they have no other way to invalidate an argument. That's very adolescent.
The good news is that after the Flyers eliminate the Sabres, they won't be visiting us anymore.

If Miller was any good he would have won the Vezina Trophy and a Gold Medal, and Buffalo would not have squeaked into 7th place in the conference.
The Flyers have so far made him look good. He has 3 career playoff shutouts, and two of those have been in this series. The Flyers will get their scoring back on track, and when they do Miller will get pulled for that other guy...what's his name.

I'm surprised that a man with your alleged playing and coaching experience "at a high level in USA Hockey" would need anyone to dissect the game and point out mistakes for you. You are watching the game, can't you determine when somebody makes a mistake? Who "dissects" the games you allegedly coach?
Time to shorten up your bench, "coach".

"so far you really haven't proven any depth of knowledge or offered any observations of the game that are impressive or even coherent."
You haven't offered anything other than insults to reinforce your claim to be a player and coach "at a high level in USA Hockey".
IMHO you are embellishing your background. You can easily disprove that by giving us your name so we can look you up on pointstreak.com. Every USA Hockey sanctioned league, team, coach, and player is listed there.
Go to my web site at www.rjsmith.com and click the "email" link to send me your name and team if you'd rather not post your name here (note that IP addresses are included in email headers so lunatics beware, you are not anonymous even with a throw-away email address).

BTW, anyone who pays the $25 fee can join USA Hockey. It's actually required to play in a league because of the medical insurance (for players) and a criminal background check (for coaches). I'm curious what you define as "a fairly high level"? NCAA?

The trick to syncing the video and the WIP audio is to press the "pause" button on the DVR and let the audio catch up with the video, then press "play". The delay is about 1 minute (and that's all the way out here to Southern California, if you live closer to the WIP server your traffic goes through fewer routers and the propagation delay is shorter).

yes, the most egregious mistake by the refs was the "roughing" penalty on Carcillo in the 3rd period. Replays clearly showed that Carcillo was punched in the face twice, once by Miller and once by a Sabres D-man. To his credit, Carbomb did not retaliate, yet he gets two for "roughing".
I just hope Colin Campbell does not suspend Richards.

Flyers had what, 7 players with 20 goals or more (Velcro Leino had 19)? So where is the offense? They have been shutout twice and Miller isn't a Vezina Trophy candidate: If he was Buffalo would not have finished 7th. He has 3 playoff shutouts, and two of those came in this series.
Boucher was superb, and had to be because the Flyers played very little defense in the first two periods.
It's a best two out of three now and the Flyers have home ice again.

Flyers need to get the PP back on track. Going into the game they were 1 for 56 (10.7%) and scored only only one of the 3 they got in game 3.
The PK was awesome killing off six Buffalo PPs.
But Boosh won this game for them, especially with strong play in the 1st period when Buffalo was swarming.

You're not nitpicking, the defense, especially in the first period, was constantly giving the puck away. I think Boosh won the game for hem in the 1st period, and he got better as the game progressed. I hope he starts the next game.
Flyers in 6.
Tue., 04/19/11 - 03:20 AM
Hexy, I agree 100% that Boosh did a great job. His quick thinking when the strap on his mask broke was, according to Darren Pang on the Versus telecast, "a move only an experienced pro would make". He gave the penalty killers a chance for a blow when they were down two men.
We were unable to see Zherdev's actions away from the puck. It's rarely possible to see that from a telecast because the cameras always follow the puck, so I'm not in a position to comment on that. But he was hustling when the cameras were on him.
I agree that only playing half the ice is selfish, but again I wasn't able to see that. Perhaps someone who was can comment.

You don't understand how the IP protocol works. In order for the proxy server to route traffic back to you, it needs to have your IP address. To do that it needs to log the address.
How many people use a proxy server that does not log IP addresses? What is their motivation?
What are you doing on the Internet that you are so desperate to hide your IP address?
You are inadvertently admitting that you are using my copyrighted image. You should exercise your right to counsel. Or simply remove it.
Sun., 04/17/11 - 19:36 PM
You're forgetting that when you log in using a proxy server, your actual IP address is logged by the proxy server and it's a simple matter to trace it back. A subpoena trumps privacy concerns.
"People copy other people's icons all the time" is not only a simple minded rationalization (what a shock) but also no defense under Federal copyright law.
Depending heavily on copyright protection, the people at philly.com won't take your back on this issue.

This is a chicken and egg quandary. Which came first, the booing or the poor play? Is the poor play caused by booing, or is booing caused by poor play?
Fri., 04/15/11 - 16:40 PM
I live in Orange County, CA. Our home team is the Anaheim Ducks, and while we go to their games, we consider ourselves Flyers fans first. I too bought Center Ice, just to watch the Flyers. The other games are a bonus.
Go to a Flyers game out here (Anaheim, L.A., even San Jose) and fully half of the crowd are wearing Flyers jerseys. There are enough of us that there are frequent and loud "Let's go Flyers" chants. When they lose (they lost to Anaheim New Years Eve) there are few, if any, boos from the Flyer fans.
To be fair to the fans at the game last night, the booing didn't start until late in the game, and on some PP attempts earlier that looked anemic.
Fri., 04/15/11 - 16:12 PM
A hockey team is a business. The fans are the team's customers. Fans boo as a way to send product feedback to the team. Product good: Applause. Product poor: Boos. Check out the prices for tickets to a Flyers game on the Ticket Exchange web site. Imagine you shelled out $250 per ticket for you and the wife, paid for parking, and bought a couple of hot dogs and beers. You're close to $600. You can hardly fault people who spent that kind of money and feel they didn't get what they thought they were getting (i.e., a win, they tend not to notice the hard work).
Having said that, I watched the entire interview with Sean O'Donnell on Center Ice and I believe him. They will play better and I believe they worked harder in this game than they have in quite awhile.

Your right, Hexy. And to those who don't think Danny Syvret played well, watch the game again. He made several excellent defensive plays, and one spectacular one (made NHL On The Fly's nightly highlights).
Carcillo does not get credit for his excellent puck handling skills and his checking. That's why he was out there late in the game.

Indeed, what self-respecting Flyer would want the Lady Byng?
How come there is no NHL award for "Most Felony Convictions by a Forward"? Ha, THAT would boost ticket sales. They wouldn't need to resort to that lame "Seat, Hot Dog, and a Beverage" package.
They could name it the "John Gotti". :)

I agree completely with the logic of giving Leighton a shot (assuming, please, please, that he clears re-entry waivers) but I honestly can't see Flyer management putting two taps in the back of the head of either Boosh or Bob at this stage.
Tue., 04/05/11 - 15:22 PM
Extremely risky move to attempt to get Leighton through re-entry waivers. I hope he clears, if for no other reason than he will be available for next season. I don't see the Flyers making Boosh or Bob walk the plank at this stage of the season, and certainly not in the playoffs.

Nuutron, while I wouldn't use the strong rhetorical devices you have to describe the Hoffman article, I agree with your basic point. It was little more than what in the business is called a "fluff" piece. It's rather obvious Hoffman reads the posts here, what he euphemistically refers to as the "vox populi". Apparently he decided that the sentiments expressed here are divided equally between optimism and pessimism, and decided, maybe upon the toss of a coin, to come down on the side of optimism. No conspiracy, just lazy journalism.
His attribution to Holmgren of the quote "The idea is to get in. We're in. We still want to finish as high as possible but I don't think you can be shortsighted and push when guys are banged up." reads like simple rationalization which apparently did not undergo any journalistic scrutiny. Translated into plain English, Holmgren was saying "We won't win the conference and I hope you'll propagate this excuse to the fans". The reality is that finishing first is important, unless you think you may not, at which point it becomes unimportant.

"The best is when they are on the powerplay and there is absolutely no shooting lane and all everyone is screaming is shoooot!!! The player shoots the puck and the same moron screaming shooot is now booing because the shot was blocked and dumped out of the zone."
Absolutely true. But ask yourself, "Why are there no shooting lanes?". Could it be poor passing that allows defenders time to clog those lanes?
broadstbu11y also wrote:
"What are we proving by booing a team that made it all the way to Stanley Cup Finals last year and have been a top 3 team in the NHL all season long?"
Many years ago (in the "hot type" days) I worked for the Philadelphia Inquirer. One of the first things they taught me was "People wrap fish in yesterday's news". The Flyers performance last year has wrapped a lot of fish.

Just so I understand this correctly, you are saying that having 7 (Leino needs one more to make it 8) players with 20 goals scored (or more) is a **liability** ?
Conventional wisdom in the NHL suggests that it is better to have scoring spread out among all lines so an opponent can NOT target a single goal scorer or line.

The Rangers were desperate. The Flyers are fatigued. The humidity in the building was high. The ice was soft. The pollen count was high. There weren't enough Gatorade towels to go around. The calls went against the Flyers. There was too much ozone in the building. The Zamboni machines emitted high levels of carbon monoxide. The pucks weren't frozen properly. The fans weren't enthusiastic enough. Too many Rangers fans were able to buy tickets. Oil prices are high. There aren't enough rest rooms in the building. John Tortorella was looking at the Flyers.
Take your pick.

Actually, I don't like Vancouver. We flew up there last December to see the Flyers and the Flyers got beat 6-2. Two nights later we were in L.A. and the Flyers beat the Kings 7-4. The Next night (New Years Eve) we were in Anaheim where the Flyers lost again. Not a good road trip.

Tonka, of all people, has taken the time to list teams that HAVE won both the President's Cup and the Stanley Cup.
Jonathan Weiss, writing for Bleacher Report summed it up nicely:
"There is no Presidents' Trophy curse. If history is any guide, the team that leads the NHL in regular season points is four to five times more likely than any other team in the playoffs to make it into the Stanley Cup finals, and seven to eight times more likely to win the Cup."

aantny88 - My positive outlook is based on watching the Flyers performances over the last five weeks. If the Flyers are looking to my posts to inspire confidence then they are in worse shape than anyone thought. And not all of my posts are "doom and gloom". When they play well my posts are supportive. When they play like they don't care then yes, I'm less than optimistic, and somewhat caustic with my comments.
I want them to win. Not just tonight against the Penguins, but the Cup. My frustration stems from watching a team go from best record in the NHL to a knife-fight for the division lead.
If I thought boundless optimism would help I'd be blowing sunshine up everybody's colon. But please, don't pee down my neck and tell me it's raining. ;-)

Oh, joy! A "low-scoring, goalie duel". That will get the blood pumping! And on top of that we have to listen to the two uber-homers from Pittsburgh and try to count how many times they say "Marc-Andre Fleury" in the same sentence.
Hope I can get the Internet feed of the Philly radio broadcast so I can mute the uber-homers.
My predictions: Nick Zherdev will score a hat trick from the press box (he SCORES with three Pittsburgh-area women who work in a local tractor factory). Sean O'Donnell will get turned at least once. Carbomb will get in at least one meaningless, indecisive scrap. Andreas Nodl will tease us more than the best pole-dancer, but not score a goal, again. Scott Hartnell will fall down twice. The goalie du jour will not record a shutout. Flyers will come out SMOKIN' in the first five minutes and then will not be heard from the remainder of the game.
Warning: This game is for mature audiences. It contains graphic violence, adult language, and inept play. Parental discretion is advised.

This is just speculation on my part, but I don't think Pronger WANTS to be the captain. And I don't think he needs the "C" to be a leader in the room. Personally, I'd skate through a wall before I'd get him mad at me.
Tue., 03/29/11 - 01:45 AM
It had to be Hartnell who fell down. I love the guy, don't get me wrong, but I can't explain why he loses his balance so often.
The "new older defenseman" is Nick Boynton, and all things considered he's doing okay. He and O'Donnell were not supposed to be getting as much ice time as they have been. They are supposed to provide a steadying influence rather than a lot of minutes but with Pronger out they are getting more. Sean is showing his 39 years (he's getting turned a lot) which is too bad, because when he played out here with Pronger he was a monster back there on D. They won a Cup together. They are slow, but if the forwards were coming back as they should be on the back check it would be manageable.

I'm not making excuses for guys getting millions to play a game, but consider this. The ice surface is not as big as it appears when you watch on TV. The angle makes it look as if there is a lot of space between players. There isn't. Get seats down one row back from the glass. Notice how all of a sudden players look closer to one another? That's because they are. This game moves fast, and when a player goes to get the puck an opponent is literally a second away from him. They must make decisions incredibly fast. When you hear a player yell "time", he's telling his teammate he has time to make a play. You will also hear them yell "Up", "Rim", "Reverse", and "Out". They are telling him whether to make an "up pass" for a breakout, to shoot the puck around the boards to a winger, to rim the puck in the opposite direction, or to ice it. When they don't communicate, turn-overs result.
The only time the ice looks big is when you're caught in deep, and there is a transition. Then the ice sheet looks as big as Antarctica. Your quads feel like Jello and respond to calls from the bridge for more speed with "I'm givin' her all she's got, Captain!". At that point you know that quite probably there is a "minus" in your near future.
I'm not making excuses, just pointing out it's easier to watch than to play.
Mon., 03/28/11 - 15:07 PM
Good point, Hexy. Vancouver has played their share of "desperate" teams in the last month and nothing seems to be slowing their momentum. And Vancouver has sustained more injuries to key players than the Flyers.
Mon., 03/28/11 - 15:02 PM
For a brief period, the Flyers had the best record in the NHL. They looked like a juggernaut, an unstoppable freight train, crushing the opposition on their way to a Stanley Cup.
Then they started spending too much time listening to the pundits telling us how "deep" the Flyers were, how talented, how THIS would be the year the drought ended. They decided the season was concluded, and it was time for the playoffs, the money season, to begin.
Now they face a four-point game against Pittsburgh which, if they lose, will bring them ever closer to the 4th seed in the conference. It reminds me of a series of engravings by Hogarth entitled "The Rake's Progress". It's an eight-part story, and it doesn't end well.

I think both you and Hexy make valid points. And I really appreciate your characterization of Zherdev as a "playground" type player (although we call them a "pickup game player: same thing, selfish). Zherdev's idea of a pass is the Kyber. You could sum up his cooperative spirit as "I've got the puck, boy are you SOL".

It is physically painful to listen to the Penguins' broadcast duo. They really do whine pitifully at the slightest excuse. We never get (or rarely get) the CSN-Philly feed on NHL Center Ice, so we MUST listen to those two dim wits. The "analyst" for Washington is a piece of work too, although Joe Beninati is fairly balanced and more entertaining. I know the home team announcers get paid by the teams and you expect them to be biased, but the Pittsburgh goofs go way beyond the pale.
Fri., 03/25/11 - 21:18 PM
The goalie issue is a red herring. When you have the 20th ranked power play in the NHL, and the 9th ranked PK (and you take lots of dumb penalties) you've got a bigger problem. When you give up 30 shots per game (ranked 12th) it's a good bet that one or two will get by the best goalie in the NHL on most nights. The real problem is an uninspired offense (with one or two exceptions they've been anemic in the last month), and what appears to be a very error-prone defense (are you reading this, Sean O'Donnell?). When they lose to a Boston, Vancouver, Washington, San Jose, or Pittsburgh you might be tempted to say "you can't win them all" and you'd be correct. But Ottawa? Columbus? Atlanta? The School for the Blind? Although, granted, the blind kids have been on a hot streak recently.

"Why did the Flyers struggle in the First Period?". Little known fact, but the team, collectively, is suffering from a rare medical disorder, the Latin term for which is craniumus et rectumalus. Their peripheral vision is extremely limited by this condition and their thought processes are severely slowed. Their outlook on life is somewhat dimmed as well. It's no wonder they did poorly. Unfortunately I think the Flyers blew any chance of getting home-ice throughout the playoffs as a result of their thoroughly lackluster, uninspired, and ultimately damaging losses in February and March. Vancouver is probably out of reach in terms of points (although you can get some great air fares :-) ). But a scarier thought is that they may squander their conference lead, and, although less likely, the division lead. For a variety of reasons, the Flyers need to practically run the table in their last month. I hope they do.

The Tuesday game against Washington is on Versus, so it is not available on Center Ice or Game Center Live. The game Thursday is on Center Ice, Game Center Live, and the NHL Network channel. It's not clear yet whose feed we will receive on CI and/or GCI, but since we very rarely get the CSN-Philly feed we will have to suffer through the two whiners who do the play-by-play and "analysis" for Pittsburgh. It will be interesting to see how they handle the Cooke suspension. The only benefit to watching the out-of-town feed is that they are usually in HD. The very few CSN-Philly feeds we get out here in Southern California are never in HD.
Does WIP radio have an Internet broadcast of Flyers games? If so, we can listen to that and mute the Pittsburgh broadcast.

As I have stated elsewhere, the thing that worries me is that Bob goes down faster than an Arch Street working girl with the rent due. Everyone in the league has figured that out and shoots high. He appears much smaller in net than he is actually because of it. But there is no denying his fantastically quick reflexes. The key IMHO, is for the Flyers to limit the quality shots on him. It's easier than expecting him to be miraculous on every shot. Sink or swim with Bob.

Pronger is on the ice with him, so if he says someone isn't working as hard as they could I'll defer to his judgement. But someone needs to pull O'Donnell's sweater. He looked like a mite when defending against Brown on Toronto's second goal. He turned the wrong way (to the outside) giving Brown the middle of the ice from where he made a nice pass for the score. Sean is getting up there in age. Maybe they need to rest him?

Eight of the Flyers next nine games are against teams not currently in a playoff spot. Will they be able to get "up" for these games? Will the excuse for losses be that these teams are "gunning" for the Flyers? Will the next excuse be that they have too long of a layoff between yesterdays loss and the Thursday night game with Toronto? Oh, and then the excuse will be that they are playing back-to-back games with Buffalo and the Rangers and have no legs. What is truly amazing is that the Flyers are still second in the entire NHL! While it's entirely possible that they make it to the finals against Vancouver (I'm hoping) I doubt they will prevail against them, home ice advantage or not. The excuse then will be the time difference and jet lag.

I agree with michaelthegreat. What is the story with Zherdev? He has 15 goals, sixth-best on the team. His puck handling can at times be unbelievably slick. He's plus 7. He's fast too. So what is it that I'm not seeing that causes him to be a healthy scratch? What is it that he is NOT doing?

I think this is a very good acquisition. Especially for the price. Versteeg was a thorn in our side last year in the finals and has a lot of potential. I hope he plays on Tuesday night against Tampa Bay.

If charging to use Philly.com will keep people like Big Tom off this site than I will pay. It's very tiring reading drivel posted by mentally unstable individuals with nothing beter to do than to vent their spleen here. Sign me up for an online subscription!

For half of what they charge for heat-pressed letters and numbers (which come off in the wash) you can go to coolhockey.com and they sewn-on letters and numerals using the same sizes and fonts as the NHL teams. $59 and you send them your jerseys and they complete orders within seven days. They are in Toronto. I had several jerseys customized and I'm thrilled with their work.

Good, my JVR jersey is safe. I agree that he is playing well. Even when he gets no points in a game he is checking effectively and getting opportunities.

If they do trade him I'll have to put my vanRIEMSDYK jersey on waivers. If nobody claims it, I'll have to send it down to the basement. Ouch.
Flyers get win in Stanley Cup rematch

The Flyers numbers are impressive. They have the best overall record in the league, the best road record, the best goals for/against differential, and they have a bunch of guys who are in the double digits on the plus side of plus/minus (Mezaros leads the league!). If they just play the way they are capable of playing in the playoffs then winning the Cup is probable, not jus possible. I think it will be Vancouver and the Flyers in the final.

Thanks for the detailed explanation.
And I agree that Eddie O is biased against thwe Flyers. No paranoia here, just listen to the guy. When he does the analysis on other NHL network games he is nowhere near as negative as when doing a Flyers game.

Actually, Doc Emrick is fairly *unbiased*. If you want to see biased announcers get NHL Center Ice and watch a Flyers game from the Pittsburgh feed, or Ottawa, or Washington. Makes my blood boil to hear some of the cracks they make. I know they get paid to market the team that they work for, but some of the nonsense they spew is beyond the pale. Which reminds me, we RARELY get the Comcast Philadelphia feed of Flyers games (home or away) on Center Ice. And almost never in HD. Anybody know why?

Sam, you need to repeat Journalism 101. You did *take* Journalism 101, did you not? And your editor? Where was he when you submitted that error filled fluff piece? Wow, the Internet has helped to dumb-down journalism. Sam's piece is a perfect example. Lavi would staple Sam to the bench.

I agree. He came back too soon after his knee surgery. He wasn't the same player the first part of this season. Hopefully the rest will help the knee too.

I don't think Chris Pronger was fully recovered from his knee surgery when the season started. He wasn't the same dominating presence he was last year. I hope his knee has had further time to heel while he has been out with the foot injury and I hope he does not rush his return. It would be nice to have him back at 100%.
Flyers end 2010 with a defensive dud

We attended this game, along with thousands (literally) of other jersey-wearing Flyers fans from here in Orange County. We expected the Flyers to be less energetic than usual due to playing last night in L.A. However we weren't prepared for the totally listless game played by the Flyers. Other than a check by Scott Hartnell (which drew a boading minor) the Flyers hit practically no one. Nikki Zherdev was practically useless (and drew a dumb penalty which led to a Ducks goal) and was totally ineffective. The Flyers spent most of the game running around and making poor passes which were frequently intercepted. It's hard to believe this is the same team that lead the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference three weeks ago. Their next game is in Detroit and that chould be another disaster. Someone in the organization needs to figure out what is wrong and fix it. On the bright side, Mike Richards played energetically as did Claude Giroux. That's it: No one else showed up for this one.

There were just as many Flyers fans at the game as there were Kings "fans". Flyers jerseys were EVERYWHERE. Several times we were able to get chants going of "Let's go Flyers". Tonight we go to Anaheim for a game in which the Flyer expatriate community will probably again outnumber Ducks "fans". Despite the lopsided win, the Flyers were running around quite a bit and took two needless penalties, one by Briere in the offensive zone while trying to prevent an icing call against the Flyers. Carcillo seemed sufficiently medicated and only took one penalty which was only an infraction in the ref's imagination. Replays should he did nothing wrong. Mezaros was a Monster out there and Briere annoyed the Queens (oh, sorry, Kings) like one of those big flies at the shore. Leighton started as shakey as a one-day-sober junkie, but as the game wore on he got sharper and by the end looked good. Let's hope Flyers legs don't turn to Jello tonight in Quack-land. Ducks are without Getzlaf so this is a perfect time to nail them.
