It should be a busy summer for the Sixers

"waiting" for a once in a generation player seems to have been Charlotte's plan for the last decade. Tanking doesn't work. There is a good chance Collins is not an NBA coach anymore. There is a good chance Holiday never learns to be a leader. But i'd rather find out for sure than give up. I say it's conceivable that Holiday flourishes with a better interior defender and a legitimate scorer in the backcourt. J.J. Hickson is a good player with upside. Mayo or Ellis or someone along those lines could really balance the offensive flow. The sixers, as awful as the season has been, look pretty good when they play hard. They really aren't that far from competing with anyone this side of Lebron. I want a championship but i don't think tanking will get us any closer.

Sixers should focus on free agency

that absolute joke has been averaging 15 and 10 for over a month now. He's also getting 2 or 3 blocks, 4 or 5 assists, shooting close to 80% from the line, becoming a legitimate threat from 3...etc. etc. Dude is over 7' and only weighs 240. He looks awkward and weak at times.....but he has been able to run the floor hard for 30 plus minutes night after night without his body self-destructing. In the offseason he worked on his conditioning and it's payed off for him. I used to think he was a joke defensively...but lately i've seen him play with a bit more toughness. Legitimate centers and power forwards can't simply impose their will on him shot after shot like they used to. If you watch the games these days you will see he is an above average shot blocker and average defending the post. He's not the defensive liability everyone insists that he is. In fact, when he gets mad he actually can be decent on that end of the floor. On offense he is a smart player, excellent passer, and most importantly a decent mid-range shooter who can get his shot off against anybody. It's time to acknowledge Hawes is a solid player worth right about the 6 million he is making. The haters are just blinded by how ugly his game looks. Andre Miller, Joakim Noah, Pau Gasol all look damn foolish on the court too but does that stop them from being highly effective in the NBA?

watching tape informs alot. When you see kendricks you see a crazy fast beast of a player. He jumps out at you. Also i like Foles mainly because he has ideal physical tools: real tall, tough, strong arm. Maybe they could have gotten him later...but i am excited to see if Reid can develop that kid. I'm excited about all 4 players so far actually. My only complaint is that they should have picked up Hill, the 6'4" 4.35 receiver the jets got

Deep sixer or no sixer at all. who's with me!!!? Seriously though this article is annoying. Go find out about Lou, Cooney, and until you do no more writing for you

Iguodala's leadership qualities are thriving and he should stay with Sixers

Andre obviously isn't a leader like a Kobe, Pierce, Nash type----taking games over, taking locker rooms over. But he has key leadership qualities for an NBA team: He plays hard and aggressive, practices hard, learns schemes and rotations, sweats the little stuff...and gets good at it. He clearly doesn't work like the great ones do at his shooting touch....and he throws temper tantrums mid-game...so he isn't a true leader, but he has enough of the qualities that make one to say it is an important part of what he brings to the table. The sixers play hard, and did so even before Collins showed up. Andre has to take some of the blame for that. I think Lou, Jrue, and Turner can get better as shooters...and i think someday, somehow in the next two years we can dig up a good center. With all that in place, and Collins continued development of their great team play, i am open to the notion that the current sixers could become a top 5 team. With a decent center their defense could become dominant...and i think over time their offense could improve a little more. So, i'm saying this team with a decent center (which i think somehow we could get in the next year or two without losing Dre) could become a top 3 defense...and the offense could peak somewhere around top 10-15. Why couldn't a team like that contend? I'm being totally serious...i think it is possible....and our best option

Evan Turner: 'One motion, one motion'

his mechanics are goofy...but i think it is telling that he is shooting much worse then he did in college--where he had the same mechanics. When i see him play i see a guy rushing his shot. The encouraging thing is he is making good moves and finding good openings in the defense...but then he rises and takes the shot without seeing the ball to the basket. Actually i have seen a lot of the sixers do this against good defenders. They rush their shot even when open. Brand is the most consistent exception. Watch Brand take a shot in a game this year and compare it to a Turner shot. Yeah the mechanics are way better but also Brand looks calm once he gets enough separation to get a shot off. When he goes to actually take a shot it looks almost like he has the mentality that he is shooting a free throw. Turner looks like he hears footsteps...and i think that is messing up his shot even more than his awkward mechanics.

you couldn't be more off the mark. One of Williams' best qualities is his humble cockiness---incredibly rare among athletes. They are usually either divas or soft under pressure. Lou is neither. He is aggressive, confident...yet he admits his mistakes and weaknesses openly and honestly...with a genuine desire to improve. He sticks to screens like glue, and is lazy on defense sometimes, but he knows it and works to improve on it...and has....a little. Most importantly Lou is a winner mentally---the total opposite of people like Mcnabb, Nuutron, Iguodala, Howard etc.

pressure is on to come up with a worthy name for these 4. History will judge the true greatness of the Philly fan in this our moment of truth.
R2C2 is not too bad....but i gotta believe there is something better. The fact that we have 4 aces begs for a poker term....but 4 aces isn't the best hand you can get anyway. A mashup of their names maybe? Professor HamLee Hallswalt? lol maybe not. The four horsemen? the four tops? four wheel drive? the armed forces? ---ok this is tough....but we have a job to do people....this is OUR time.

go to espn....click on "roster"....check L.A., Orlando, Boston, Utah, Miami, Portland, Denver, San Antonio or any respectable team. Good teams are happy to pay their 2nd or 3rd best player 11-15 million or more. Andre is our Gasol, Lewis, Allen, Jefferson, Bosh, Aldridge, Martin, Ginobili etc. He's paid less, and plays better overall than many of those guys. It is not Andre's fault that we have no Bryant, Wade, Roy, Garnett. His salary is in line with his skills and is a false excuse for why we don't have a star on our team. Good coaches for good teams (i.e. the olympic team) recognize that Andre fits well with star players. So explain to me again why Andre is the reason we don't win....or please please shut up.

The Evan Turner effect

i was a big fan of Speights and especially Young...up until last season. They both have talent to dominate...yet how come we still haven't seen it? Can we safely blame that just on crappy coaches or an Iggy in the way? May be part of it, but i am concerned about the game IQ and competitiveness of Young and Speights, which makes the next move with this team less clear. If Turner is a true go to scorer (which is why he is rated 2nd best player in the whole draft) then Andre might be able to shine in the role most of us think he was always best suited for (the pippen role). Those who want to send Andre and Sam out underestimate the defense Andre plays on dominant sg/sf players. When was the last time Kobe, Wade, Lebron, Pierce etc. had an above average game while playing Philly? As for Sam, he is frustrating to watch, but he also manages to be in the top 5 in the league per48m in rebounding and blocked shots. He is a big time interior defensive presence...something critical to have to take advantage of the size we will have in the frontcourt. Green and Lou can't guard the 3pt line...but with Sam at center, Turner and Jrue can smother the line better without worrying as much about staying in front of slashers. We won't solve our 3pt defense if we lose our interior presence. All this to say we might just be better off keeping everyone, or trading Young and Speights for a big with game IQ.

Deconstructing the 76ers

this team is fixable because it has a lot of pieces that are difficult to acquire. Legitimate pg who can defend (holiday). A skilled second fiddle who can score, defend, pass, all unselfishly (iguodala). A legitimate center with the rare combo of quickness and interior presence(dalembert...most of the time). And a handful of others who would be useful on a good team (young, carney, williams, kapono). Maybe we can get lucky/trade speights/young and move up enough to add a star scorer. Mix that with a respected coach and suddenly we could be a good team. Point is the sixers are easier to fix than most of the other broken teams because we already have some players that would fit well on a contender. Brand is a great example of a good player that doesn't fit well on a contender. If Stefanski goes...hope returns.

Gonzo: Jordan Show begging to be canceled

Eddie "the question" Jordan really is amazingly good at being horribly bad. That is an asset for tanking the season as much as possible. He might help us get lucky in finding a go to scorer with a shooting touch in the draft. I know this sounds crazy, but if we can add a legitimate go-to scoring presence somehow...and then find a respected coach...this team has a chance to come together next year. I like what i see from Holiday...and really everyone else but Brand and Green are useful players who can do certain things competitively. I was a fan of Iguodala, but now i see he just refuses or is incapable of leading and is to unselfish and weak-minded offensively. But i think the right coach can lead this team defensively...and an aggressive offensive player with touch can organize them offensively. I think the combination of those two things could make this talented but lost team come alive. So let Eddie "the question" stay another month.

A very positive outing by Cole Hamels

it's hard to tell without actually facing the pitcher....but on tv Hamels curveball has always looked pretty good to me. He threw it too high or down the middle a lot last year...so i guess he has command issues. It is nice to know his cutter shows promise...but i hope he keeps working on the command of his curveball and uses it too. If he added a bit of weight i bet he could add a mile or two to his fastball and probably a bit to his durability. Both would be a huge help for not much work on his part.

Westbrook era over

it is dirty art more than science figuring out when to cut a veteran. B-west has a big contract...and maybe there was no way around that....but i think purely from a football skill standpoint....it is a year too early to cut him. My bet is he still has a lot left speed and agility wise....he is extremely prone to injury so you definitely can't have him as your feature back....but that is why we have Mccoy. We need defensive ends, o-lineman, and safeties more than complimentary h-backs...so i concede this makes sense for the eagles. But Westbrook will be really good this year for someone if he can stay healthy somehow.

it's a weird thing to say..but at this point the calamity is almost fun. Dumb thing to say for those whose businesses or health are suffering....so to you, i say forgive me. But Philly has uneventful weather and geography. i've always been in awe of a really powerful thunderstorm, for example, or strong winds, big waves, tall trees, jagged mountains, and the worse this snowstorm gets, the more it falls into that category for me. It's almost like a bit of the true outdoors is falling on our heads!

hairball makes a great point. Mcnabb is an amazing quarterback who is too mentally inconsistent to complete a run through the playoffs. "playing loose and having fun" only gets you so far. I don't like Owens...but he was a demanding player who plays angry and dominant...and i think he got Mcnabb to play a bit like that too. If Mcnabb doesn't learn to play angry, or with determined arrogance, he will never have the kind of focus needed to plow through the playoffs. He has the talent and the instincts and the football smarts...but he's too goofy and fidgety.

my hope is they are waiting til the stretch run this summer to better see what they have and what they need. Perhaps Lidge regains his '08 mojo. Or maybe Mathieson or some other young guy surprises with a big step-up. Maybe Rollins improves his obp. Or on the other side, maybe one of our starters has a bad year or is injured. I know the pickings in the summer are not always as good as now, but sometimes they are better. Either way i kinda like when teams don't overextend or overcommit salary before the season....cuz it gives flexibility when the unforeseen inevitably pops up. It also gives unprovens a chance early in the season to earn a place with the regulars. I think we can give the young or cheap a chance for awhile. It's not like we need to win 100 games to get out of our division. If something doesn't work out, we still have the summer trade season to patch up the boat.

it is a good thing to get upset when someone unjustly harms someone or something else. Having a sense of right or wrong and enforcing that standard in all aspects of life, and to all life, is an important lost art these days. BUT SERIOUSLY peacemaker has a point. We are insane as a culture and the outcry for this cat....reminds me of driving by an accident where a bus went off the side of a cliff...and all you can think about is the dead rabbit on the side of the road that it hit on the way down. Dry eyed, you won't see massacre right in front of your face...but you shed a tear for a little juvenile crime. WE ARE NUTS
