Shutdown screwup: City Tavern clobbered by feds

I generally support Obama but I think they he took advantage of the Republican led shutdown to score political points. The administration was proactive in making the shutdown worse than it had to be assuming that people would blame the Republicans. While the Republicans were wrong to hold the country hostage I think the administration is guilty of playing cheap political games at the expense of the people they are supposed to serve.
P-ew! Why is a huge Philly charity going after your pension?

Private pensions have been gone for a long time. Workers now build their own retirement with 401k's and savings. Taxpayers who have to worry about saving for their own retirements are getting fed up with overly generous government pensions given out by vote hungry politicians.

She is not the murderous tyrant, her husband is. While this seems like a frivolous article, I don't think there is anything wrong with reporting on the whole person rather than just the caricature that we envision them to be. When you understand that your enemy you have a better chance of resolving the issues that make you enemies.

Ruiz was using Adderall which is against the rules except for the 10% of players who have had a doctor prescribe it. Who knows how many legitimately need it for a medical condition. While wrong I would not put it in the same class a steroids since many players are allowed to use Adderall. Ruiz should have gotten a doctor to approve it and he could have avoided trouble.
Eagles Notebook: Eagles' Halaby tackles scouting analytically

I think they are taking a good approach. There is a place for the knowledgeable scout but also a place for statistics. Scouts can fall in love with a guy which could blind them to the facts. Taking a balanced approach should help inject more objective criteria into the evaluation process.

The guy was wrong and has faced being publicly humiliated. He also has to deal with any hurt feelings in the locker room. I suspect that the players know whether or not he is really a racist and will treat him accordingly. He made a mistake, if it is a one time thing then it is over. If it proves to be a pattern of behavior then further action by the team will be required.

It is hard for me to see how more spirit and better strategy would make a difference with this team. The players they were counting on were either bad, hurt or both. As for calling Charlie Manuel "such a stupid man", he has spent 50 years doing what he loves and has made it to the top of his profession in a very competitive arena. Have you? I doubt that many of the people who love to ridicule him have had even a small fraction of the success he has.

It is the city's issue. The city has the authority to enforce laws the neighbors do not. If your neighbor abandoned their house and it became a rodent infested trash dump I doubt you would say tough luck.

If they can't connect the ping from the cell phone to my identity then I don't care. Unlike government Nordstrom can't send you to jail just try to sell you more stuff. If bothered by this you can turn off the wifi while in the store. I could see it getting creepy if they record your face while paying to put face and name together. They could then use facial recognition software to target individuals based on prior purchases.

I think that part of the problem is Amaro's low risk high reward philosophy. It can work if it is really low risk and high reward but that has not been the case. It is not low risk when you have to rely on that player to perform well. For example Chad Qualls was sold as low risk high reward but in reality they were relying on him to be good and when he wasn't it cost them dearly. I would say you can take that chance with a young starter who can do long relief or a fourth outfielder and see if they become Jason Werth but when you need the player to be a key contributor now then this approach is flawed.

Baseball is just a sport played for entertainment not a solemn ritual so if a guy wants to celebrate a home run so what. It is not like he is yelling at the pitcher or doing the moon walk around the bases. Baseball people get a bit too serious about the unwritten rules.

The Pulse: Calling them by their name
- 2 out of 75 total comment(s)

I did look it up and the research says that the term was first used by Native Americans to describe themselves. It was made popular in writing by author James Fenimore Cooper and was not considered derogatory. The team was named the Redskins in 1933 to honor the coach "William Lone Star Dietz, who was an American Indian. If Native Americans are not offended by the name and it is not used to depict any group in a negative way, why is it offensive?
Sun., 05/26/13 - 17:08 PM
I would not describe liberals in those terms and think that people who do so seem close minded and incapable of taking part in a meaningful discussion. As I posted earlier I do not think the name has to be changed although I would not care if it was. If the term redskin was still commonly used to demean native Americans and a significant percentage of them were offended then I would say change it. The last poll of native Americans that I saw showed 90% were not offended, 9% were and 1% no answer. Seems like a manufactured issue.

I don't mind union workers making a decent wage but I don't think they should not have a strangle hold on the convention center. If an exhibitor wants to roll out their own carpet on plug in their own lights then thy should be allowed to do so. Labor should be used where needed but not forced on exhibitors and prices should be determined upfront to avoid the incentive to milk a job for the OT.

Seems silly to blame the clothes but if I had kids there is no way I would buy anything related to that brand. Seeing the half clothed dumb looking teenagers employed at A&F stores is enough for me to spend my dollars elsewhere. I also would not want my children to think there is anything "aspirational" about a brand of clothing. Better to focus your aspirations on what you can achieve not what you can buy.

I agree that the Schiavo case was an disgraceful attempt by Republicans to impose their values on others. I just don't think it will be relevant to voters in 2016. If you poll voters in the past elections I doubt that the Terri Schiavo case would have been a deciding factor or even a remote consideration for the vast majority.
Thu., 04/25/13 - 10:56 AM
He may not win or even run based on many things but I doubt that the Terri Schiavo case will have any impact. What percentage of the population remembers the case? Of those that do, I doubt that very many will make a connection to Bush and consider it an important factor in how they vote.
Thu., 04/25/13 - 10:50 AM
I agree on the wars but not the surplus. The "surplus" was based on projected economic conditions including a continued rise in the stock market which generated extraordinary tax receipts. As we learned the stock market was a bubble and the economy cooled off as it always does. Bush could have been better fiscally but people talk about the "surplus" as if Clinton handed Bush truck loads of gold rather than binders full of optimistic financial projections.

Republican members of Congress want to investigate Jay-Z and Beyoncé's trip to Cuba
- 2 out of 54 total comment(s)

I doubt Obama gave them permission to travel to Cuba. They either applied for a license or went illegally. I went there with a license and it was very easy to obtain and I did not need to give Obama money to do it. We have an embargo against Cuba because politicians do not want to risk angering a some voters in Florida. The embargo has done nothing to stop the Cuban government from oppressing people but it has hurt the Cuban people by limiting their economic opportunities. The embargo is hypocritical and needs to end. Our government is denying us the right to travel to an interesting and beautiful country in order to punish Cuba for denying rights to its citizens. More Americans should go there just as many members of Congress have.
Mon., 04/08/13 - 13:21 PM
The license requirement has nothing to do with safety. It is strictly political based on the trade embargo that we have enforced for the past 50 years. The policy was designed to get rid of Castro which still has not worked. I have been to Cuba twice and did not feel any less safe than I did it Paris. If Beyonce and Jay Z want to go to Cuba with or without body guards, let them.
Miami Mayor: 'Residents of Miami were raped' by Marlins ballpark deal

Thu., 03/28/13 - 08:57 AM
I think the issue with the payroll is the quality of the product the Marlins are producing. Spending $68 million more on players would produce a better teams and wins. In theory, this should give fans a reason to go to the games and spend money which would help justify the city's investment. In reality Miami made a bad decision which should serve as a lesson for cities and states when teams come looking for future handouts.

This would not be a story if the guy catches the ball. I agree that Jimmy is not Charlie Hustle but I don't think this incident was all that egregious. I don't think anyone in the league runs out pop ups the same way they do ground balls. Charlie had to pull him based on the last incident which was truly egregious.

It is ok for Schimdt to express his opinion. No need to get offended. He was not saying anything negative about the current players. He simply saying they pitch to locations that do not generally include the batters head. The game has changed and intimidating pitchers are not really part of baseball anymore. I think current players would agree that they fear not hitting the ball but not the ball itself when they face these guys or any of the other great pitchers in the game today.

The Phillies should not treat Halladay like a new toy that you play with until it breaks. He has 12 years in the majors and 4 left with the Phillies, piling up innings and complete games means nothing if he is worn down in October.
