Blog Post: Should life begin at different times depending on the legal context? - 1 out of 4 total comment(s)
- Thu., 01/31/13 - 09:44 AMWithout reference to the statutory framework under which Colorado grants the right to sue for Wrongful Death, and how the Statutory framework defines the individuals to whom are granted the right to recovery, this article needs work. It is entirely possible that the definition of the "life" stated in the Statute does not include the Plaintiff in the action before the Court. As a Catholic, I am not comfortable with the apparent inconsistency between the Church's position on life and the argument that they are presenting, but as a lawyer, I am also not going to assume that the argument is irrational without including the legal definition of the protected class of Plaintiffs in my analysis.
Blog Post: Group of guys have played cross-country game of tag for 23 years because age is just a number - 1 out of 1 total comment(s)
- Tue., 01/29/13 - 16:17 PMYou get only one childhood but, played properly, immaturity can last a lifetime.
Article: Pa. labor chief: Police probing hotline problems - 1 out of 5 total comment(s)
- Tue., 01/29/13 - 15:14 PMI have had clients that needed to appeal from denials because they were unable to get through to this line. Sabotage? Considering the thoughtful response that they got from the staff at U/C, I am not so sure that they were unaware of the problem.

Article: Credit card fees can be charged at checkout - 1 out of 27 total comment(s)
- Tue., 01/29/13 - 11:54 AMWhile you may disagree with the fee, you have already been paying it each time that you used a card at a gas station that offered a lower price per gallon for gasoline bought with cash. This is simply extending it to the larger market, and requiring the retailer to do what the gas station owners/operators have not done- advise you that the additional cost is being assessed.
Article: Camden man shoots daughter, 11, in face on purpose - 1 out of 47 total comment(s)
- Sat., 01/26/13 - 11:31 AMIs that his daughter's name tattooed on his neck?
Article: Helen Ubinas: Blame the school's screw-ups, not the burqa - 1 out of 95 total comment(s)
- Thu., 01/17/13 - 10:20 AMI wonder if those that are calling for the banning of the burqa aren't aware of the similarities with the response to gun control proposals: "Burqas (niqabs, or whatever the proper name for the garment is)don't steal children; people steal children." It is irrational to attack the garment when there are proper security measures that would avoid this situation recurring.
Article: Suit: Temple gave football player a pass after dorm rage - 1 out of 28 total comment(s)
- Tue., 01/15/13 - 19:37 PMThe comment in the article indicates that the suit "does not specify physical contact" in reference to the allegation of assault; under Pennsylvania law, a civil suit for assault does not require contact. Contact would lead to a claim of battery, instead of or in addition to the claim of assault by the football player.
Article: Good Samaritan says he did what he'd want 'someone to do for my child' - 1 out of 188 total comment(s)
- Tue., 01/15/13 - 09:35 AMKnowing nothing about the Islamic rules about burqas, is it possible to require the women wearing them to identify themselves to women that are on staff at the school? I understand that the reasoning behind the burqa is modesty before men, but it seems that revealing yourself to a woman would not be a violation of the provision, and could lead to increased safety.
Article: Tell Me About It: Mom-to-be needs to rethink her germ phobia - 1 out of 9 total comment(s)
- Thu., 01/10/13 - 17:51 PMIodine- my mother in law said for years that children need to eat a pound of dirt in order to avoid illness later. Essentially, she was arguing the same type of immunity through reasonable exposure process that you are suggesting. I am not so sure that allergens are in the same class, but general dirt is what we need to see kids handle.
Article: It's easy for a bibliophile, or anyone, to get lost in used book stores - 1 out of 4 total comment(s)
- Thu., 01/10/13 - 15:53 PMAdd to the POSSIBLE list of victims of this trend against book store success the Chester County Book Company. Apparently, they have conceded the lease issue, and might be opening elsewhere, but they will be gone within weeks as well from their current location.

Blog Post: Philly cop arrested at Texans game - 1 out of 25 total comment(s)
- Tue., 12/18/12 - 14:40 PMAlways a fascinating question- what caused the need for an "arrest" in the first place? Notice how many times the sole charge that is placed against an individual is for "resisting arrest" without any underlying offense that would have justified the need for the "arrest" to occur.
Blog Post: Reports: Phillies sign John Lannan - 1 out of 102 total comment(s)
- Sat., 12/15/12 - 12:26 PMThe Phils will make Lannan feel better than the Nats did, just by spelling his name right. (First week with the Nats, they misspelled his name on his uniform; later they blew it again in the scoreboard.) Let's hope he gets comfortable quickly, and fills the Blanton spot well.
Blog Post: Philadelphia Union take familiar risk with selection of veteran Colorado Rapids forward Conor Casey in Major League Soccer Re-Entry Draft - 1 out of 8 total comment(s)
- Sat., 12/15/12 - 09:31 AMInteresting acquisition. LeToux will never stop running, and Casey brings a muscle alternative to Hop and Jack. Amazing what options are now available for Hack.
Article: Surprise: New insurance fee in health overhaul law - 1 out of 7 total comment(s)
- Tue., 12/11/12 - 08:59 AMHeadline:"surprise". First sentence:"unexpected". Second paragraph:"buried". I understand that this is groundbreaking legislation, but it strikes me that the bill was around for an extended period of time, and has been enacted long enough for the challenges to wind their way to the Supreme Court on at least the first round. Why is it that employers haven't yet caught on to the idea that there are provisions here that will require them to shell out funds? It is not as if they haven't had the time to review the law. We heard nothing but kvetching about the "Obamacare" and that apparently was before anybody ever read the act. Here is an idea- read it and understand it. 3 years of an interim payment to get things up and rolling, and fund benefits that will eventually lighten the load on the employer's health care costs because everybody will eventually be covered, reducing the load on the system of uninsured patients is a great deal.
Article: Philadelphia Union loan Upper Dublin High School product Zach Pfeffer to TSG Hoffenheim of Germany's Bundesliga - 1 out of 5 total comment(s)

Blog Post: Graham: No more wide nine - 1 out of 23 total comment(s)
- Mon., 12/03/12 - 13:20 PM"Wide 9" looked more like "wide 95", with all of the HUGE gaps that led to unobstructed runs to the defensive backfield. There is more interference with a clear road on 95 than the D line was able to generate with that scheme.
Article: Dick Polman: Lincoln movie shows messy process behind noble results - 1 out of 16 total comment(s)
- Sun., 11/25/12 - 09:35 AMIn so many different sources during my Political Science classes, politics was defined as "the art of the possible". Compromise was seen as both a necessary part of the procedure, and an admirable skill for any of the participants in that procedure. Today, we see any indication of a willingness to concede a point as a definitive character flaw, instead of either a potentially valuable recognition that the opponent is not Satan's spawn and possibly has an equally valid philosophical position, or the recognition that practical solutions to problems require practical agreements to move forward. Here, Lincoln trades patronage for a constitutional guarantee that human bondage will not be permitted to continue. Would that process be seen today as a small price to pay for the benefit of mankind, or would it be seen as selling out to political friends for their votes? And what will we be seeing from the coming political maneuvering on the "fiscal cliff" negotiations? Will the electorate recognize that the politicians that move from their no taxation pledge are being practical in the face of a real need to move forward, or will they face the wrath of the Americans for Tax Reform? On the opposite side, will those that recognize some need for fiscal restraint be pilloried as caving to the demands of Grover Norquist? It is both heartening and frightening to see that the personal attacks on those that are in politics haven't changed much in a century and a half. Apparently, it is the nature of democracy to be unable to find a civil level of disagreement with those with whom we disagree, but it surely would be nice to see that we can learn from the past.
Blog Post: Union waive three players, pass on Major League Soccer waiver draft - 1 out of 4 total comment(s)
- Wed., 11/21/12 - 08:50 AMConsidering the general lack of movement on the waiver draft, I guess that this is more of an academic question, but I don't understand holding this draft before the season is over. While the remaining teams are successful and less likely to be making huge moves, even they cannot think that all of their players are going to come back. Why not wait until the season is over to hold the waiver draft? It seems to be an invitation to wait until the last two teams standing make their decisions.
Blog Post: Video: Rich Hofmann on Nick Foles' future with the Eagles and Andrew Bynum's future with the 76ers - 1 out of 29 total comment(s)
- Tue., 11/20/12 - 18:58 PMOUCH! A game and a half into his career and he gets tagged with "regrets"? A twenty something with an entry level contract and an offensive line that is introducing themselves to each other before the game? I wonder why people think that we have unreasonable expectations as fans in Philadelphia. While I understand the frustration with this year, how about giving the kid a break? (Without better protection, "a break" is likely to appear soon enough as he fractures something.)As to Bynum, the trade was for an injured player and everybody knew it. How can you criticize a guy for not healing fast enough to meet your standards? The new issues sound like they are simply freaky, but let's hold our fire on that until there is some word on whether he even winds up missing any additional time.
