Berube lets goonish behavior slide

A) Berube was right to dismiss your question because you don't discipline in public you "couldn't make it at the WSJ" hack. B) This was all of what, 10 minutes after the game, he hasn't had a chance to talk it over with the player so he rightfully shouldn't say anything to the media about it. Face it, you're trying to make a name for yourself by making the conferences about yourself. There's an old management saying, praise in public, discipline in private, you should learn that phrase and never expect a coach to tell you what they're going to do with a player.

Have you ever considered that no amount of "good teachers" will ever help certain school districts like Philly when the root problem lies within the societal issues of poverty, education not being a top priority, and surrounded by violence?

The wires in question are live to the touch. They aren't like normal power lines that birds or other animals can sit on. If you touched one of those wires, you'd fry yourself, no need to also grab another wire.
Kevin Riordan: Controversy over Cherry Hill's new earlier school day

I just had this discussion with friends last night. The education system in our state is darned if you do, darned if you don't. How about they just tack the 14 days on the end of the school year, or not have a Christmas and Spring break? Parents would complain about that too since it would cut into family time. People talk about summer's off but there are some districts whose parents want the summer curriculum to go all summer to Labor Day so they can just keep sending their kids in and not worry about daycare because that's what they think the public schools are.
As for the earlier versus later, I don't see why they couldn't tack on 15 minutes to each side of the schedule to balance it out.
Time to remove an obstacle to progress in Camden

Can someone explain to me what is "historically significant" about this building? What historical even happened here? It was owned by Sears, sorry, that's not historical. Did something here happen that our children would learn about in a history class? No? Then what's the big deal?

Why is this building a "landmark"? What significant event happened here? Just because something is old, doesn't make it historic or a landmark. I'm tired of this kind of thing. Other towns, like Moorestown and Haddonfield do it. Just because something was built a long time ago does not protect it from destruction while the area around it progresses.

Not a fan of Christie's but he's right on this. State did a bunch of stuff to get the Nets to stay but they even had to be convinced to play at Newark for 2 years once they tore down the Meadowlands arena. Good riddance and we'll have the Charlotte Bobcats in Newark soon enough.

Remove I95, are you nuts? No, how about we put in the expressways we were supposed to have, like the Crosstown, Girard and Pulaski (Betsy Ross to Roosevelt Boulevard), upgrading 291 to an expressway between I76 and I95, and extending Woodhaven to the turnpike. If anything, this city needs more expressways in it, not less.

You say that about Zherdev? Really? Did you watch last nights game? Or this series? He and JVR are the only ones playing, and JVR was a little invisible last night. I've wanted Zherdev to play and actually get some PP time all year. No idea why Lavy doesn't do it.
Thu., 05/05/11 - 11:35 AM
I agree, I think that'll go down as a bad trade. It's a shame he'll be here next year and Zherdev won't.
Christie's bills would change teaching system in NJ

The more I read about the plan, the more I see an opportunity for HR people to now have another industry to become involved in and new type of companies/firms to handle teacher evaluations and tracking. I really do want to see the details. If it is only bullet points, this thing will be DOA on the State Senate floor.
Wed., 04/13/11 - 15:13 PM
Yes, but standardized tests cover cumulative knowledge not grade specific required knowledge and besides, if the student does no work or participate in class and fails the standardize test, how's the teacher at fault again?
Wed., 04/13/11 - 14:23 PM
@rampage412, you are correct on the pay scale also. Remember people, this all happened with the school administrators and look where their salaries went. If you get one for under $150K a year, you are lucky. This is going to drive up the costs of math and science teachers dramatically.
Wed., 04/13/11 - 14:18 PM
Wow, this looks like many plans the private sectors have. Take the most experienced people, set them up to have one failure so they can be gotten rid of for cheaper alternatives.
Christie: Fire bad teachers, ignore "bully" union

But you do. You can vote for the school board members who negotiate on your behalf. Problem is no one runs to unseat these people. They're as bad as the politicians (most in NJ aren't "politicized") in that it's the same people with the same motives and who are either former teachers or former administrators.
Tue., 04/12/11 - 20:01 PM
You can fire bad teachers, there are procedures to do it. Just like at my work there are procedures to fire poor performing employees. The problem is it takes time and paperwork, something apparently the $175K+ administrators don't want to do, which is why nothing happens with bad teachers. Talk to any teacher, they know who the bad ones are and who are just there for the pay and benefits. They also know the administrators and teachers are hand-in-hand at protecting them.

JerryD, you must forget the 12 or so districts that voted for their pay freeze with the promise of getting back their state funding and the districts getting about $2K5 to $50K each and still having to lay-off dozens of teachers. Yeah, that's the type of inspirational leader NJ needs.

I said after the game yesterday, they were gassed. Lavy's admitted he probably road them hard for 3 days, plus a game, plus another brisk practice then a back-to-back. I'll question the 3 hard days, you usually give yourself an off-day or light day before a game, see NFL, walkthrough. I still think more guys are feeling the affects of the flu bug or some other sickness permeating the room than what is being talked about publicly.

I think the whole team has the flu. An entire team can't look like they have heavy legs unless Laviolette ran them too hard those 4 days off. You see them playing the way they were, doing the same cycling, they just look a lot slower right now.

If it's a two way contract, who cares. Emery needs to prove he can play somewhere, but with DiPietro going done for 4 weeks now, maybe it's the Islanders where Emery lands.

I remember watching the post-game presser where Andy answered this question and his tone definitely was a "throw Akers under the bus" tone. All this really shows me is Andy's leadership qualities which is to say he has none. Ever see Vick go running up to Reid, no, he goes to Marty. That also tells me volumes about Reid.

How many Phillies parades will snow removal cost this year?
- 1 out of 1 total comment(s)
Mon., 12/27/10 - 12:08 PM
Where does the extra cost come from? Is it from the need to buy more sand/brine solutions? That I could buy. Don't tell me it comes from overtime due to these events coming on a weekend/after hours. Public Works employees should be salaried and this in their job description along with being "on-call" at all times during the winter months for snow removal. Increase their salaries $5K (which is normal amount for "on-call" support) and now it's budgeted every year the labor cost.

That's not what the city was in, they were in a snow emergency which has nothing to do with travel restrictions, it has to do with what is required by the citizens in the removal of snow and cars from the streets. It also allows them to restrict travel if they deem they need to.
Mon., 12/27/10 - 12:03 PM
I think they should have played then those that can "only" drive to the game (which is bunk anyways, there's plenty of mass transit options) might finally wake up this region to its need for more rail/subway options to get into the city and the sports complex.

Wrong, professionally meteorologists have been following this since last Saturday with the European model predicting this large of a storm over and over. The problem is no TV station around here uses that model and after the infamous "storm of the century" fiasco, no one wants to go out on a limb until every model (there's like 5 of them) agrees.

Christie's agenda on charter schools are not to make them an extension of the public school system like in PA, but rather alternative, privately run schools. See his tax breaks for corporations to donate to private charter schools. The reality is he wants to set it up so that public school kids can get sent to private "charter" schools which are nothing more than quasi private schools with funding from both the taxpayer and private businesses.

The thing I see going on on comments and gripes is people complain about teachers and their benefits etc. and in the same breath bring up examples of superintendents and principals. They are represented by two different unions/associations. The problem is the admins (supers and principals) do the budgets so what do you think they're going to cut? My town has an elementary, intermediate, middle, and high school each with a principal and vice-principal, minimum. They could combine a principal and vice principal for the intermediate and elementary schools (each could rotate between them), saving the costs associated with two over 100K positions (salary plus benefits). Also, eliminate middle-school sports programs as most towns have their own rec programs that can take its place. Finally, make kids walk to school more. I have no idea why someone who lives a 1/4 mile away from a school can't walk to it. Map out around each school and ensure kids don't have to cross busy streets or state highways like 73, 70, 38 etc. That'll cut transportation costs by 15-20%, guaranteed.
