Blog Post: Brandywine picks Georgia dorm builder for 36-story Philly site: sources - 1 out of 5 total comment(s)
- Fri., 02/01/13 - 22:54 PMIs this Campus Crest, the Charlotte, NC based, publicly traded REIT? They have a tough time delivering standard student housing on time (a Google search will show all kinds of development issues, I believe at Maine most recently). Should be interesting...

Blog Post: Kenney: Probe lawyers, advisers, bankers on Phila finances - 2 out of 9 total comment(s)
- Wed., 02/29/12 - 17:01 PMCleanup does have a point that law firms and non-affiliated advisors who gave advice could be investigated to ensure there was no conflict. That I can get on board with. But don't sue the entity that sold a product that worked as intended just because there was a loss.
- Wed., 02/29/12 - 16:54 PMSwaps sounds like a good trade. Rates go up, you're hedged. Rates go down, you sue. I'm really tired of municipalities suing banks over swap deals. The point of entering into the swap was for the municipality to fix its interest payment, and that was accomplished. Maybe municipalities need to make sure they have people running their finances who know something about how hedges work.
Blog Post: PA sets fall target for $300M/yr Amazon tax effort - 1 out of 3 total comment(s)
- Wed., 02/08/12 - 09:46 AMIf the lobbying effort for a national sales tax on internet purchases is successful, Amazon will stay in PA. If not, Wilhelm is right, off to DE for AMZN

- Tue., 08/09/11 - 11:56 AM"Former Pagans leader pleads guilty to attack on another banker." I didn't realize the Pagans were in on the mortgage business now. I bet they have low default rates.

Blog Post: Janney's PA-taxpayer-backed move to 3 Logan - 1 out of 9 total comment(s)
- Fri., 07/29/11 - 11:07 AMHey Joe, I walk past the Janney sign at the NW corner of 18th and Market every day - that's not Commerce Square and not a Brandywine building.
Blog Post: PhillyCarShare in merger talks - 1 out of 2 total comment(s)
- Thu., 07/28/11 - 20:15 PMSince Zipcar boosted its fleet in Center City, while maintaining comparable pricing, PhillyCarShare hasn't been able to compete - I switched. PCS needs a partner with capital so it can expand and improve maintenance. I hope PCS makes it; if they go away then I'm sure Zipcar prices will go up.
Blog Post: NW Philly, LBI, Main Line post offices on shutdown list (Update) - 1 out of 25 total comment(s)
- Tue., 07/26/11 - 14:56 PMWhen seniors get their SS checks on a Saturday, how do they turn them into cash without bank clearance? I know some banks have limited weekend hours, but the money isn't in their account until Monday. Also, all new SS recipients are required to use direct deposit, and ALL recipients must use direct deposit by 2013.
Blog Post: Council Candidate Calls For City To Be 'Less Weird' - 2 out of 25 total comment(s)
- Tue., 04/05/11 - 17:58 PMStephen - the widening project has been underway for 4 years and Panama is paying for it. Ports that can accept post-panamax ships will benefit from it, and right now Norfolk is the only one on the east coast that can. So yes, good idea to have one of those here.
- Tue., 04/05/11 - 17:23 PMI've never heard of Hornstein before this article, but just checked his site. His 5th "Achievable Policy Idea" discussing the impact of the Panama Canal widening, and how Philly could capture a portion of the coming east coast port renaissance, is dead on. When the canal is widened, it will be cheaper to bring container ships to the east coast than to drop on the west coast and ship via rail. Nobody outside of logistics nerds is talking about this, but there is serious potential.

Blog Post: Banks slated to take over Granite Run Mall: update - 1 out of 14 total comment(s)
- Fri., 02/18/11 - 13:55 PMSimon is, by far, the shrewdest, most capable, best-capitalized mall operator in the world. If they can't make Granite Run work, it's probably done. However, don't be surprised if someone less smart (PREIT?) tries to buy it from the bank cheap and it flounders for a few more years before finally dying.
Blog Post: To raise US cash, will Obama rent out roads, rails? - 1 out of 3 total comment(s)
- Thu., 02/10/11 - 18:55 PMafrdmd and MikeP - both dead right. Earmarks, salaries, and small agency funding get talked about a lot more, but the biggest spending issues are defense and entitlements. Now if only our elected leaders had the guts to go after the big issues...
Blog Post: Glaxo downsizes from Center City to $81M Navy Yard site - 1 out of 11 total comment(s)
- Tue., 02/08/11 - 11:43 AMThe Navy Yard is a Keystone Opportunity Improvement Zone, making corporations located there exempt from city business privilege tax, net profits tax, real estate tax, and sales & use tax (all in addition to several state taxes) for a multi-year period. With the onerous Philly tax structure, these are the type of deals that must be done to keep jobs within the city limits. No doubt a suburban township would have offered a similar deal as well. Here's the source on tax exemptions: http://www.philakoz.org/
Blog Post: The end of homeowner America? - 1 out of 7 total comment(s)
- Tue., 02/08/11 - 10:10 AMJoe, perhaps a good time for the apartment business, but keep in mind that Fannie and Freddie are also the major lenders against multifamily properties. Higher rates from private lenders will mean lower apartment property values as well (or higher rents).
Blog Post: Restaurant notes: Starr's new pub will be called... - 1 out of 5 total comment(s)
- Fri., 12/10/10 - 10:40 AMI walk past 18th & Sansom every day, it doesn't look like Dandelion will be ready before Christmas. That said, I like the combination of the former shoe store with the long-time restaurant space, should make for a nice addition to the area.
Blog Post: Philadelphia's bond rating lowered by Moody's - 1 out of 27 total comment(s)
- Wed., 11/17/10 - 17:21 PMFor whatever it's worth, the ratings agencies are always at least 1 step behind. To me, a downgrade to A2 means Philly is really either A1 (if the budget director is to be believed) and Moody's is reacting to old data, or A3 and Moody's is not looking hard enough.
Blog Post: $1 billion+ payday for ex-Jefferson doc's firm - 1 out of 4 total comment(s)
- Mon., 08/16/10 - 17:53 PMGoogle was started in '97 and it's worth $155B. Not every successful business involves screwing people, just hard work and some luck. Obviously the populist posters on philly.com who want everything handed to them won't ever recognize that though...
Blog Post: State helps union build new South Philly hall - 1 out of 17 total comment(s)
- Thu., 06/03/10 - 08:08 AMwhy spend the money to build a hall? couldn't they rent or buy one of the empty buildings in the area for less?
