Five years later, woman gets her stolen house back
- 1 out of 30 total comment(s)
Wed., 04/24/13 - 11:39 AM
I remember this house; I just recently moved from the Rittenhouse area, but remember driving and walking past this house wondering how it was left in such squalor in a neighborhood like Rittenhouse. She admits to all but abandoning the property, then plays the victim when someone swoops in and wants to fix it. I understand what was done with her deed was illegal, but her abandonment of the home is also illegal. Maybe L&I can get back to work and start fining her for the state of disrepair that she has left the house in for so long. It's a shame to keep this eyesore around in Rittenhouse. I agree with the other comments asking the author to do a little more digging into this story and this woman.

Starting after Labor Day WOULD make sense. There is no reason to start such a massive project prior to a highly traveled holiday weekend. Waiting would make sense to anyone EXCEPT to those who want to convince people to stay a day longer or arrive a day earlier to avoid the traffic and will then spend more money in New Jersey.

All of these comments about Parking Authority making a lot of money is false, at least for the Parking Enforcement Officers. Trust me, a family member is a PEO, they do NOT make an exorbitant amount of money and still continue to subject themselves to the "friendly" Philadelphians, as well as the harsh weather that can be expected from a Philadelphia winter. Let them do their jobs, as we all allow you to do yours without harassment or bullying.

Why shot-at Mom refused relocation
- 1 out of 34 total comment(s)

The victim is now an accessory-he is refusing to turn in an attempted murderer for fear of being a "snitch" or a "punk", while his mother, her fiance, and his 6 other siblings are risking death everyday because of him. It's a shame she turned down the relocation, and I think she should still take it, but I also see how she shouldn't have to be scared out of town because a bunch of murdering failures say so. The citizens of Philadelphia need to start realizing that keeping their mouths shut only allows for someone else to fall victim at the hands of a waste-of-a-life nobody.

City government and private industry alike have both seen years of frozen wages, thus leaving some employees without an increase in salary or even a cost of living increase for years. Why is it fair that the teachers shouldn't have to make some sacrifices, too? I am all for fair practice and increasing wages; however, when there is such a huge budget deficit and children are already receiving less-than-standard educations, why should you be taking more money? I also agree that Ackerman should have to take a cut in salary AND have to return her bonus(es) and free chauffeur.

Ronnie Polaneczky: The turn of the screwed, Philly-style

Similar incident happened to me.. I relocated to the Rittenhouse area last year and got myself the parking permit so that I could park my car and leave it since I now walk to work. I parked my car one Saturday and went about my business until the following weekend when I was heading out grocery shopping and my car had been towed. There was building remodeling/construction going on across the street and they had put up Temporary No Parking signs in the interim, thus causing my car to be towed. Thankfully Siani's was nice enough to knock the price down a bit for the tow and the storage; however, I think there needs to be a better way of notifying neighbors when temporary no parking zones sprout up. I'm clearly not alone when it comes to parking and leaving my vehicle only to have it towed by temporary no parking regulations. How can we get a more efficient and fair parking system in place?

Joe Sixpack: Even 'nanobrewery' is too big for Fishtown
- 1 out of 12 total comment(s)
Fri., 02/11/11 - 15:50 PM
Move up the street to Port Richmond - I'm sure they wouldn't mind you bringing in more beer selections. Fishtown is still a bit jaded, as mentioned, from the Sugar House deal, and they're also afraid that their neighborhood is being taken over by out-of-towners. In the recent years college students and post-grads have swarmed the neighborhood and taken the old family-feel away, and I think this just scares the current patrons that the family-style neighborhood might be lost soon. So, that's why I am recommending Port Richmond - as a PR native myself, I would have loved the idea of having someone "nanobrewing" a few blocks away, giving me an option other than Miller Lite, Coors Light, or Bud Light! Don't give up Mr. Patton!

Karen Heller: Politics clouded the safeguards against practices like Gosnell's
- 1 out of 21 total comment(s)
Wed., 01/26/11 - 19:22 PM
It appears to me that the majority of the comments above were written by the same person with various nicknames. The bottom line is that the state department of health failed to oversee abortion practices for fear of appearing "politically incorrect". Abortion is legal, and has been, and should remain that way when performed legally. Dr. Gosnell carelessly and callously performed illegal procedures and caused harm and death and did so with NO oversight. He is a cynical, evil, selfish demon who lived only to inflict pain and increase his own personal wealth. Please stop focusing on the politics behind abortion and focus more on the horrors endured by many at the hands of this evil man.

Please stop crying over the people who willingly gamble away their money. The guilty party in this scenario is not the casino legally offering slots and card games - the guilt party is the person refusing help for their gambling addiction or choosing to spend their rent, tuition, grocery, etc. money at these facilities. It's a HUGE loss to the city and residents alike - the possible revenue that could have been generated could have had the potential to keep Philadelphia citizens from paying exorbitant amounts of money on taxes.

@tlee: You do not know that these people have lived law-abiding lives, and the fact that they committed even that ONE crime means that they should have been forced to ONE punishment. It's appalling to see that we would write off what we deem "non-violent" because we simply don't feel like pursuing these people. The victims of these crimes, I'm sure, would not find them to be so "non-violent". And saying "a little sexual assault" is both shameful and disgusting. Sexual assault is NEVER a "little" thing - it is demeaning, terrifying, and sometimes life-altering. It seems as if perhaps you are benefiting from this move.

Knowing more gruesome details doesn't help the case or the cause, it just makes things worse. He did the crime, he did the time, and now it's his time back in society. This is absurd.. just because they choose to include it on the bill for larger parties does not mean it is REQUIRED. I had parties in the past pay the bill, minus the included gratuity, and it wasn't an issue. Tipping is ALWAYS optional, regardless of whether or not the restaurant decides to include it on the bill.

Though impersonal and broad-based, for some it might be a motivator to have a better school year than the past. There is no political agenda, and for those of you concerned, play the tape backwards, maybe you'll hear a subliminal message about health care. Otherwise, it's just a back to school speech. Consolidation on the table at Catholic high schools

Being a recent (within the last 10 years) graduate of Little Flower and having a bunch of friends who attended various other Catholic High Schools, @phlyfumblr, you are incorrect. The Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese, for the most part, are well prepared and well structured. The curriculum is on par with private academies in the area that charge much higher tuition, and the actual environment is much safer and much more well run than the public school systems. I believe in having a portion of our tax dollars go into funding private education just because it isn't fair for parents to pay taxes that fund public schools in addition to tuition to fund a safer, better education. Also, this is a chance for alumni like myself to make donations, no matter how small, to help keep their Alma Maters open.
