RI to Collegeville is about 5 hours if you cut across 78 to Allentown (which makes sense if he was seen near Coopersburg (which another article reported). Then last contact was his debit card being used west of there towards Kutztown - which makes no sense if he was heading to Collegeville.

I agree - not the coach's fault. This team has had more coaches than Mike Keenan than probably any other NHL team. It's a revolving door of coaches and it's time for stability behind the bench. Like the other commenter said - time to bench some players - Briere & Coutourer (sp??) would be the first two to sit out a game or two.

So since Aqua replaces water mains all the time, and PECO gas mains are all underground already, why does PECO still look short term ("ooo costs too much") instead of long term ("think of the money we'll save not having to deal with huge storm outtages") and refuse to take the power lines off of the poles and instead move them underground where they belong??

From what I know (I am not a bar owner), filling growlers by a bar - i.e. not a brewpub - is a bit of a gray area in PA (or maybe county law). A couple friends own good beer bars in the city and they won't because they're not sure where they legally stand. I've been told by brewpubs they can only fill them if their name is on the growler or they can print a band so it's labeled. On the other hand, Capone's fills them but if it's busy there it can take a while - I usually try to go in right as they open to get mine filled.

Took the survey and here are the important points. 1 - too much fluff and not enough news. 2 - what little news there is is often just a skim and not in depth. 3 - any image galleries in philly.com are just horrible - poor navigation, small photos, nonsense captions. 4 - Stop splitting articles to several pages just so you can make more ad impression revenue. ALL of these can be nicely summed up by just visiting Boston.com - probably the best web local / news site there is. Any redesign that doesn't mimic that is probably just going to fall short.
SEPTA's new electronic payment system will be a big change for rail commuters

Classic example of if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I don't understand what the problem is with the current system. 90% of rush hour commuters have passes. There's no delay getting onto a train at any station and the conductor takes 2-3 minutes to go through the car, confirm passes, take the occasional ticket or cash and answer any questions from no daily riders. Making you "check in" when you get on the train is going to put huge delays on inbound morning trains as people dig out their "smart cards", let the scanner read them etc. This is going to be a nightmare for daily regional rail riders.

I think Bob will be fine. What I think the problem is with this team is leadership - not a lack of it, but an unclear leadership situation. When they acquired Pronger there was concern about bringing in a fiery leader and how would Richards react. This year they brought in two more in O'Donnell and Shelly - both of whom I think contributed a good deal this year. Now you've got 3 real veteran, outspoken leaders but your captain seems to be a timid, meek and laid back personality who had a mediocre season and poor playoff run (except for a few games). The team was transformed from a young core group who had been together for some time lead by a captain who they had gelled around. Now you've got too many cooks in stirring the pot. I don't think this is the fault of Shelly, O'Donnell or any of the other veteran leaders - I think it's Richards inability to deal well with the change in team chemistry and that has leached out onto the other younger players.

When's the last time a "random" street crime included disposing the body in a landfill and being so good about hiding evidence that the FBI offers up forensic assistance?
Comcast vs. Netflix carrier: Higher fees ahead?
- 1 out of 9 total comment(s)
Tue., 11/30/10 - 15:33 PM
This isn't so much about Comcast vs. Netflix as it is about 2 large bandwidth providers standing off about a peering arrangement. Most large bandwidth providers agree to trade peer traffic between networks for free. Smaller networks pay fees to access larger networks. Occasionally, one will feel the need to get aggressive and say "we're bigger than you - you must pay us now". This is exactly what Comcast is saying to Level 3 (not Netflix - Netflix is just a big Level 3 customer). Level 3 tried this with Saavis (I think it was Saavis) back in 2005 and they actually made it to the point of disconnecting their networks and it was a will of who was willing to lose more customers first. 99 times out of 100 this is just blustering and there won't be any disconnect of traffic. If there is, just get FiOS - it's WAY better than Comcast anyway.

Hey Bob - FiOS already gets CSN Philly, but each year Comcast has moved more games to CN8/TCN. Last year 4 Flyers games were on CN8/TCN, this year it's 10. About the same for the Sixers. In Spring, several Phillies games will be on CN8/TCN. Does this ruling effect TCN? My guess is no, and that the only thing this ruling will do - if enforced (doubtful, Comcast has lots of friends in DC - Mr. Spector...) it'll just let them take more games off of FiOS and other services and stash them on TCN. Also, I had read an article somewhere that said Comcast has absolutely NOT witheld CSN from satellite operators - they just weren't willing to pay for it like Verizon/FiOS apparently is. How about a little more digging on this story Bob??

@jlacerra the problem with that is that the city will spend $5,000,000 and 2 years studying a solution, then put out RFPs that'll take another 2 years, and by the time they select a solution the bidder will have quadrupled the bid and the city will be locked in. How about just getting on the phone to some other similar sized cities "Hi, this is Philadelphia and our property taxes are all messed up. What software do you use? Do you like it? Do your citizens riot over it? No? Great - got a phone number we can call? Thanks!".

"Does Stevens deserve all the blame"? No. And neither did Dineen, Simpson, Murray, Cashman, Neilson, Ramsay, Barber or Hitchcock. This team is a revolving door of coaches, and yet the net result is nearly always the same. Uninspired, unemotional, sloppy hockey. There's really only one constant all these years, and that's at the very top of the organization - and presumably the one who dictates - either directly or indirectly - the demeanor of this club.

Stop being so stubborn. He comes into a game with a game plan in hand, and when it's obvious to EVERYONE that after the first couple series that plan is ineffectual, he sticks with it. Also, with his team - starting with #5 - he continually tries to pound a square peg into a round hole. We have effective weapons at RB and deep threats at WR, and now even a decent TE, but Reid's game plan isn't suited to their talents - especially at this stages in their respective careers. A good coach will look at his talent and design an offensive game plain to maximize their talents and minimize their weaknesses - not try to reshape them during a game to his vision. Oh yeah - the thing that drives me INSANE about AR's playcalling - if it's 3rd and 8 - don't throw the ball 5 yards and hope to get it on yards after the catch!! I continually see other teams with 3rd and long design plays to get the ball PAST the first down line.

I agree with jpp30 - I'll put up with the hassles of this strike as long as needed. The Septa bus employees are nothing but rude, arrogant and cranky - and yet they get raises constantly and no cuts in benefits. Both my wife and I have had pay freezes in place at our jobs, have lost benefits, had health insurance coverage go down, out of pocket expenses go up and are being docked more out of our paychecks to pay for health care. Start dropping the pay offer day by day while they're on strike - make it a pay cut, not a raise and see how fast they get their a***** back to work. Or, let in private competition for bus service.

As I'm sure it's been pointed out before, if Booth wasn't injured, that hit would be the hit of the week on nhl.com. On one hand that completely support and promote that play with their highlight clips and web site, and yet if the player is unfortunate enough to get injured the NHL all of a sudden takes a (very hypocritical) stance of "Suspension! We're trying to eliminate cheap head shots for the game" - yeah right!!

Flyers to Waive Jones
- 1 out of 45 total comment(s)
Fri., 09/25/09 - 15:22 PM
I think "he stinks" is being a bit harsh. Yes, he's overpaid to be a 6th d-man on the Flyers, but on many teams he'd be a #3 or #4 and would probably fit in fine. Yes - he had a bad season last year with give aways in his zone, but so did several other players. Just look at the change one season can make (i.e. Brad Lidge). Re-entry waivers were part of the last CBA. Any player on a minor league making more than $75,000 who is called back up to the parent club must clear these waivers. If claimed, the parent club and the new team split the salary cap hit. In this instance, the Rangers could claim him if waived right away and take the full cap hit. If they gamble and wait to see if the Flyers recall him, then they could claim him and take the half hit. If the Flyers leave him on the Phantoms after clearing the initial waivers, no other team can claim him until the Flyers (if they) call him back up this season.

How Comcast is beating Verizon

Fri., 08/28/09 - 17:24 PM
For those thinking of switching to FIOS...DO. Do NOT sign up for it online though - call and speak to a human (who is actually located in this country). When we signed up, within 5 minutes of completing my order on the phone I was able to log into Verizon's order tracking site and my package was written out exactly as I ordered it - complete with the deals offered (no setup fee, free DVR for 6 months, 2 year price guarantee with only 1 year commitment, 6 months free HBO, 6 months $39.99 per month discount). The HD package on Verizon is far superior to Comcast. HD quality is similar, but the FIOS non-HD quality blows Comcast away. Comcast's 6mbps internet (which is just 3mbps w/ the speedboost compression) is a joke compared to the 25x15 with FIOS (and yes - numerous speed tests and real world usage yields 23-24mbps speeds w/o any hokey compression). Verizon's customer service is also a pleasure to deal with when compared to Comcrap. Also, the FIOS DVR is multi-room capable so you can watch your programming on any TV. Comcast insists on charging your MORE if you want a 2nd DVR ($15.95 / mo for the 1st, $22.95 / month for the 2nd - how does that make any sense)??

I'd love to see what other people pay for Comcast - maybe this is a good place to start. It seems that everyone pays something different for their Comcrap cable. We're in Wyndmoor (19038) and have the Digital Preferred package (no premium channels like HBO) and a Comcast DVR (talk about a piece of junk compared to Tivo) and we're at $74.90 per month. We NEVER use the On Demand - most of the movies are so old, or so bad, they make most direct to DVD movies look like emmy award winners. Here's a hint though to get a better price. Call their 800 number and insist on speaking to a "retention specialist". The drones that answer the level 1 phone calls can't help you, but these retention specialists are the ones that can give you promo deals even if you're an existing subscriber. If you do this, do NOT mention the local sports - if you do, they know they have you by the short and curlies.
