In hindsight, Ryan Howard's contract an expensive mistake for Phillies

Rich...c'mon brother....your odds are 50-50 on predicting this. Given his age and production at that time most GMs sign that deal. His lack of contact was an issue but seeing what he did when contact was made, well 180 k's a year was not a big deal. If we don't sign him he probably would've gone to the yanks where he'd have gone 50/140 a year, won 4 WS rings and we'd be having a different conversation. Oops...another one of those 50-50 predictions...

This is a bad spot to be in. Your greatest position of need is one where there aren't many options. The best solution is to field an outfield with solid defensive, on-base guys that generate runs or take them away. You're not getting offense out of 3B. Your options there are Galvis (dude is never going to sniff 10 HRs), keppinger (singles machine), or 50 yr old Kevin Youklis (can he still be effective?). I'd have to sign 2 outfield guys and leave LF to both Brown & Ruf. You ride the hot hand. This team cannot afford to have 2 rookies out there...too much has to go right and I don't take that chance. Pagan is a slam dunk. Maybe you do Melky on a 1yr deal? Maybe you can convince someone like Sizemore to do a 1yr deal? I'd even kick the tires on Ellsbury....see what Boston wants. You have to have production out of your outfield to make up for the lack of 'O' at 3B.

The most difficult pill to swallow is Thome. I love the guy & what he brings, but at a time when you need players on the field, he's a guy that's going to give you 1 at bat a game, 1 start every 5-6, and never play back to back. He's a luxury for a team that needs that 1 bench guy to provide a homerun threat off the bench. They need a bench player that can provide depth.

I'm curious about Kruk's minor league stats and how he progressed. I agree that physical tools account for most....ok the majority of scouting a player's future ability but you have to believe that a true hitter can't be missed. You can't teach a batter's eye or bat speed. A HS or college player can have all the tools but they if they start the bat early looking for fastballs....you have Hewitt-like numbers basically. Now I've never seen the kid play, and I'm guessing the bat speed is there. Some guys just never rely on their instincts. Can't teach instincts either.

I hear ya Jim. The most interesting thing about this series is that if the Phils continue their winning ways, they could put San Fran back in first. You don't wanna give the D-backs any hope that they can compete but if you blow their doors off in these games.....you're staring at a possible San Fran showdown.

Question for you....are you from LA? Seriously. If you've never lived in Philly it's tough to understand. Hockey represents the city. It's about crooked fingers & noses, missing chicklets, and bringing your lunch pail to work. Old school hockey. Philly takes pride in 'ugly'. Ugly=passion......and no passion isn't throwing snowballs at Santa.

I agree about not wanting to give up prospects for anyone but Pence. The only problem is that he's NOT getting traded without unloading a bunch of prospects. Wade isn't the brightest GM, but he's not that dumb. If a move is going to be made this early, you're looking at junk. hate to say it, but unless you want Vlad or Beltran (more about salary)this is the time to sit. Wait for some teams to fall off....it'll happen. Just don't panic and make a bad move.

This team either needs to get better defensive players or get some guys who can control the clock on offense. A quick strike O is only awesome when you have a dominant D. Not when your defense is as weak as your offense is dynamic. Balance.....or keep them off the field.

Doc...there's a reason why he's been on 3 teams in 3 years. He's not that good. He's one of those guys that plays on a bad team and you think he's ok. That is until he's on a good team and bats .220
Mon., 11/08/10 - 07:01 AM
Murph-I'd like to see this team consider a multi-position bench guy capable of 300 at bats (or more). Like Willie Bloomquist or Hairston. Yes they need a RH bat, but with the injury history you need someone (actually 2) guys that can hold down the fort should it happen again. And someone that can play multiple spots. Say no to Beltre.....that would be a bad move. He'd strike out 200 times in this lineup trying to match long balls with Howard.
Mon., 11/08/10 - 06:54 AM
Ok this is craziness. Howard is a stud. You can't hit when they don't throw you a strike. He's trying to do it all himself and needs to learn how to take a walk. I like Werth, but he is a product of this lineup and having runners on base constantly. He'll have success, but are you going to find another team where there are runners on base 50% of your at-bats? And don't give me Valdez...he is a bench player. Good defense, no stick. He is ok with this lineup because we don't need his offense. That being said, don't fall in love with him.

If the Eagles win this Sunday and get that coveted bye, the most important thing is the way NO & Min have been playing. They've been stinking up the place. Win one playoff game (at home mind you) and the Eagles could very well be hosting the NFC chanpionship game. Only one team has a better record and I doubt they can handle the Cardinals (did I just say that?). Win this one, sit back & buckle up. I have a feeling this is going to get interesting.

EagleBeliever is right about the fact that spending doesn't guarantee a championship. It puts the odds in favor of the team that puts out the money, but the players have to perform. That being said, MLB needs to consider removing teams generating little to no $$. That will improve the player base. Either that or a salary minimum requirement!

4 games are scheduled to be played in an AL city which means a DH. The DH means less strategy and subbing (normally defensive but you won't be doing that for obvious reasons). Makes sense to go with an extra arm for mop up duty. Why tax the pen if a game is a blowout? Tha being said...why is Bruntlett still on this team? He's a pinch runner.

Probably not a good idea. I need to see times. It comes down to being able to cover a TE. We know he can handle the run....probably still. The league has quite a few very athletic TE's and he'll get attacked every game. Are the Eagles considering a 3-4 defense? I don't get it. Love ya Trot but don't let them take our good memories of you away.

Alright, so what if alot of Flyers fans feel as though the ice is tilted and our team is always skating up? The notion that the referees have been told to crack down on Philly is ridiculous. If they've been told anything, its to call Flyers games straight up because of how rabid we are. Here's a bit of wisdom I'm going to give to the refs though...you better call it as you see it. If not, as my grandpa used to say, 'somebody's gettin' hurt'. You're going to see guys taking shots at people just to hurt them, and not just to finish a check.

As difficult as it is right now, because having that connection to Harry would be fantastic for us, it wouldn't be the best thing for Todd. The hardest thing to do is follow in a parent's footsteps. 5isaKing-agreed. What I don't get is that Reid's offense is based on timing. Timing equals a 2-3 step drop and then pass. Not drop and go thru 4-5 reads. McNabb is far more talented than Garcia, but Garcia made the offense work. I don't think he ever went beyond his 2nd read on a play.
Tue., 04/07/09 - 06:53 AM
How many passes did Westbrook catch? If you take out his stats what's left? I'd like to know. If the offense was more balanced ( running game) he may not be far off. Not saying that quintet is the greatest show on turf, but they'd be more effective with some balance as well as more consistency from the QB. Hit them in stride, fewer over/under throws. Is there a stat(s) to calculate missed opps? Not trying to get all sabremetric here, but I for one would like to see some coaches game film.

Mick-funny. I often ask myself that question. No system is ever perfect so there will always be inequalities....or fixes needed. Without guaranteeing revenue sharing being used for the purpose of fielding quality teams I don't think there's anything that can be done. Including a cap. The NFL is a well oiled machine and sells itself. MLB is far from that.
Thu., 12/25/08 - 08:05 AM
I think a better idea would be a system to provide salary help to teams so that they can keep their young stars. Rather than revenue being shared with teams, with some owners pocketing that money, it should help fund salaries for players like Hanley Ramirez, or Cole Hamels so that they can stay on their teams longer. Aside from the money going directly to players salaries what good would revenue sharing do?
