ISSUE | ECONOMY Beggar thy neighbor When Henry Ford started mass production of cars early in the last century, he quickly realized that there was a major problem: Sale prices would be far too excessive for the average buyer. His solution was a stroke of genius. He raised the salaries of his employees to what was a generous amount at that time, $25 per week. In all probability, other employers followed his example. As a result, sales of cars increased dramatically.
ALMOST two years ago, President Obama announced that he was tightening the rules under which the CIA carries out drone strikes against suspected terrorists in Pakistan, Yemen and other countries. Afterward, civilian casualties did, in fact, fall significantly, according to independent monitoring groups.
