For some, it may be best to follow Trump's advice

I should have known the direction Donald Trump's campaign would take when I saw he was riding the "down" escalator to his presidential bid. But I couldn't foresee how quickly he would voice his anti-Mexico sentiments.

I should have known the direction Donald Trump's campaign would take when I saw he was riding the "down" escalator to his presidential bid. But I couldn't foresee how quickly he would voice his anti-Mexico sentiments.

When he encouraged Americans to boycott Mexico, I realized that if you are listening to Trump, then of course there are so many reasons you should take his advice. Here are just a few:

In Mexico, we speak respectfully to one another. We make eye contact and say "good morning" to strangers on the street. "Please" and "thank you" are required. If you're listening to Trump, you may not be comfortable with that. It is probably better to stay home than to experience the wonderful effects of Mexican politeness and civility. It could change you for the better. You wouldn't want that now, would you?

If you are listening to Trump, you may feel it is important to announce every day how much money you have made. Do not come to Mexico! People are not valued for their net worth here, but rather for their loyalty to their family and community. You will look foolish and people will pity you. "How sad," they will think. "A person who has only money." Note: They will not, however, roll their eyes and berate you out loud. They will smile and nod - see politeness and civility above.

Mark Twain said, "ravel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness," but if you are listening to Trump, travel may not be enough. Don't worry. Maybe someday there will be a pill.

If you are listening to Trump, then you know that Mexicans are carrying infectious diseases into the United States. Think about this! You could catch Ebola or measles if you come here. Or, worse, the trauma of learning that there is no Ebola or measles in Mexico might be dangerous to your mental health. Truthfully, since the U.S. vaccination rate against measles and other childhood diseases (92 percent) is worse than Mexico's (99 percent), we are a little worried for our own health if you visit. A wall across the border may look better and better - to Mexicans.

Why would you want to experience a culture that values respect, family, and community? That is generous, resourceful, and joyous? Do not do it! It might make you question why you are listening to Trump at all.

Of course, if you do boycott Mexico, you will miss the incredible richness of the culture, the food, the history, the people. But it's all OK. If you are listening to Trump, you will not even know what you are missing.
