Recluctantly disappointed
A strong supporter of Nutter during the election, I expected him to take a strong leadership position and really change Philadelphia. There are so many opportunities for him to improve this city for residents, businesses, and tourists alike that it is hard to believe so little has really been accomplished. The economic downturn was a perfect opportunity for Mayor Nutter to make some serious changes, and what we ultimately received were higher wage and sales taxes, and the deferment of debt obligations.

Way Beyond disappointing
One party rule in Phila has ruined it

The Future
I have been a strong supported of Mayor Nutter and will continue to be so for at least one more year. Now that the budget issues are behind him, he needs to force some major changes within city government. Spin off PGW, contract out a big chunk (40%?) of trash pickup and then evaluate if the rest should be on contract, implement fair value real estate taxes, terminate the DROP, set higher standards for professional city employees, push a customer service mindset to city employees, and cut back those areas where city government does not belong. I do not understand why the city provides day care services or after school services for some select city residents. We need to cut services so we can cut taxes to bring people and jobs into the city. There is still an exodus going on here.

PR Campaign
If Nutter fails it will be bad for the City. However, it has been 20 months of constant press conferences. Normally an executive will have something to show for all that bluster. I am afraid that Nutter is a great councilman (the councilman got press without actually having to do anything but criticize John Street) but not a decision maker. The Peter Principle is in effect in Philadelphia. There is physical evidence that John Street was Mayor, sealed buildings, fenced lots, few abandoned cars, filled pot holes. All Nutter can point to is broken promise.

More of the same
Like many others, I had high hopes for the incoming Nutter administration, especially in the areas of reform of city government. But Nutter seems like just another Democratic party hack. First, he refused to comment when Goode Jr.'s aide Latrice Bryant was seeing bringing a case of Coors to Goode's house for lunch on a workday. Then, he proposed to increase our property taxes during a recession, only to be stopped by Bill Green and city council. He can redeem myself in my eyes if he gets meaningful concessions from the union during the contract talks, and by this I mean true reform of their pensions and a move towards 401(k)s. Otherwise I don't care if he's a one-term mayor.

Doomsday Drama Unnecessary...
When the mayor of a city this size throws his hands up and says "What do you want me to do?" while creading a doomsday plan as a solution- it shows how unprepared he is to run the city. I have lost a lot of respect for the mayor after watching the budget and the casino projects fall apart around him while he offers no real solutions, only a lot of overly dramatized worst case scenarios...

Time for change
He has done nothing but grandstand, hired a bunch of carpet baggers from out of town and as soon as he gone they will no longer live in Philadelphia. So ask yourself do they really care about the city I think not. Other than showing his face on T.V. And using scare tactics on the people of Philadelphia what has he done for anyone but himself. For him it's beencut this and cut that raise this and raise that but did he cut anything out of his office I think not, look back at his city council record, nothing then and nothing now. He needs to go take his money and run, it's time for change or there will be nothing left in a city not worth staying in.

Nuttin' in Nutter
Nutter the campaigner had a vision for the city. Nutter the Mayor is a political chameleon, changing his stripes to suit the opportunity of the moment. I can't believe how disappointing he has been as a mayor and his constant cries of wolf haven't endeared him any either. Part of why I moved into the city was because of the vision and hopes he laid out for Philly. Well boy that was a dumb move on my part. I will not be voting for this man again no matter what office he runs for.

Baby Steps
Opposed to the other opinions I've seen, I feel that Mayor Nutter has done a good job so far at making governement work during the toughest economic time since the Great Depression. He is fixing the zoning code, trying to fix the BRT, fixing Fairmount Park, created Greenworks Philadelphia (which will improve the city's national reputation as a progressive place), created more jobs, fosters innovation, negotiates with unions (again, baby steps), and shows his support and love for Philadelphia every chance he gets. You can't just change 50 years worth of "business as usual" in just 2 years. He was handed a full plate when Street left, and lost tons of city revenue. Agreed, he may not have solved all of the corruption issues in our government, or decreased the overall dropout rate, but I believe these things will come in time. As mayor, he has to have healthy relationships with other aspects of government (i.e. City Council, Harrisburg, etc.) if he wants to get anything done in this city; it's a highly political place with lots of inside connections. I am optimistic that things will slowly continue to get better as his first term comes to an end. I also believe he will get another term in a better economy and things will improve faster than some people might believe.

Drama Steps
Rendell and Green had a local economy far worse off. This national recession has had a far less negative impact here than in other cities. Property prices are basically stable. Unemployment is less than other cities and far less than the early 90's and 80's. The zoning code is being fixed because of Frank DiCicco's bill creating the zoning code commission, Greenworks is a paper making promises (much like the campaign), please name the innovation he is fostering (unless you are referring to unimplemented ideas), who does not love Philly? Please, it's almost two years and there is little to show for it.

NAC Phila WI-FI failure.
On June 17 2008 The Network Acquisition Co. agreed to take over operation of the existing infrastructure put in place by EarthLink and pledged to enhance and expand the network. NAC, led by entrepreneur Rick Rasansky, said it plans to eventually bring free Wi-Fi service to Philadelphia citizens. Absolutely nothing is done. And Mr. Nutter is silent.

Plenty of Nutt'n..A Towncryer
High hopes dashed on every front. A total defeat of confidence and performance in government of "New day, New Way". Nutter has only succeeded in leading us into a dark tunnel of despair and re-organized the government into body parts that do not function together. Nutter is the best as the Towncryer for his position as Mayor we have got plenty of nutt'n for the 1.5 million people of Philadelphia.

No Guts
Instead of scare tactics and threats go after the people in your own house(city hall)before raising taxes or cutting services. Why does management go after the people that actually do the work while the thieves like the ones in city council keep getting fatter on the workers backs?NOBODY SHOULD BE ABLE TO RETIRE FOR 1 DAY AND RETURN TO THE SAME JOB WITH FATTER POCKETS,NOBODY.

Why focus negativity on the City?
I appreciate that you are trying to aggregate experiences with City Government. I also realize that Philadelphia has gotten a bad reputation in some areas of city services. I also really appreciate that Mayor Nutter has been out front trying to rectify this. But why are you focusing this kind of criticism on just Philadelphia? I have news for you, some of the suburban governments are just as bad, if not worse. This site serves more to spread the assumption that Philadelphia is less efficient than suburban governments. There is plenty of waste in suburban governments. But people don't see because they are smaller units and there is less attention focused on them.

SAME OLD POLITICS
I thought Mayor Nutter was going to be different, but nothing has changed. Scare tactics, like laying off Firemen and Police to get a tax increase. Why not get rid of the Council Aides that make $90,000 a year, dont't show up, but can carry a case of beer into her boss's residence on company time? And why spend millions on useless 3-1-1 system when we don't have the money? And the biggest insult to the city...no money for the Mummers Parade! An institution in this city! One that brings toursit dollars, full hotels, a great party atmosphere where they don't break the storefront windows! Get rid of the waste at City Hall instead of closing pools and libraries. They're really the only things the taxpayers get to use.

BRT -Mayor is Fox in the Hen House
Mayor takes the Rug right out from under the Citizens:: That's right. Placing the assessments under the Finance Director will not make them fair it will make them rise. It will be a back door TAX INCREASE. Oh the rate will not change City wide, but the base assessments will. The mayor is fox in the hen house...and we are dead ducks!!!!

Talk about walking into a mess
I still have great confidence in Mayor Nutter. I think he's slowly repairing fundamental city organizations and departments while dealing with the worst budget crisis since the 80's. Rizzo's stamp on Philly politics and City Hall will take a long time and effort to clean up. And as a bonus, it's such a relief to hear our mayor speak intelligently and in complete sentences - even when it's bad news.

"What can I do?"
"what can I do?" is not the way a competent Mayor responds to problems. This clown even CREATES problems: "We've ADDED bike lanes on Spruce and Pine streets" -- Yes by eliminating 50% of the traffic handling capacity on already congested streets. In addition, the buses must use the bike lane, so we still have bikes weaving in and out of traffic. Still a better spot for them than the sidewalks of "Our World Class City". Mr Mayor, no world class cities permit bicycles on the sidewalks. There is a city ordinance specifically prohibiting this, State law requires bicyclists to observe all the laws of the road. When Phila police are asked about this, they respond "We don't enforce that law" (Why not?) or "What do you want me to do about it?" (Wonder where that mind set originates?). Sadly, these responses are more than I received from Nutter or DiCicco when I wrote expressing these concerns on three separate occasions. I heard nothing in return. This administration is befuddled when it comes to anything other than burdening life long Phila. residents with higher taxes and reduced services. NO ONE IN THE CITY HAS EVER EXPLAINED WHY THE RUINOUS PROPERTY TAX ABATEMENT PROGRAM (RIFE WITH ABUSES) CAN'T BE TERMINATED. THIS PROGRAM LOWERS VALUES IN THE SURROUNDING AREA. Along with great ideas like charging for trash collection, closing libraries, etc, it's obvious that this Mayor is in way over his head, except when it comes to showing off his biking outfit, blowing kisses to the camera, and mugging it up with Will Smith or Jamie Fox. Let's face reality; Michael Nutter is the living embodiment of the Peter Principle. He is a mediocrity who became Mayor because the other Democratic candidates neutralized each other. MAYOR NUTTER, IF YOU CARE AT ALL FOR THIS CITY, IT'S TIME TO DO WHAT YOU DO BEST -- GIVE UP. RESIGN TO SAVE THE CITY OF THE EXPENSE OF A RECALL CAMPAIGN. YOU ARE A DISGRACE.

Things are better...
...but still room for improvement. Considering the disastrous economy foisted upon us by George W. Bush and his cronies, and the fact that the PA state legislature is filled with people who make Homer Simpson look like a genius, it's a miracle things haven't totally fallen apart in this city.

Pants on Fire!
Liar Liar Pants on Fire! we should shout out about reform. Idle claims by self indulgent "Mirror Mirror on the Wall" Nutter. He has little to claim as his own, except gutting City Services and procaliming doomsday. He said when he took office that he would have system to measure results. He is loose a Goose and measures nothing, WHY? There is nothing to measure except his ego-sized-head of Nuterian.

Nuttin but Greed
Nutter is so power hungry that he is holding the position of ward leader in wynnefield and mayor of philadelphia at the same time. So Wynnefield has a Nutter double whammy. That's Nuttin but greed! He knows Philadelphians only plan to keep him for one term as mayor, so he is jockying for position to run for a second term by lining up his cronies anywhere and everywhere, and in key positions. We thought Rizzo was dangerous, Nutter is worse. Another term of Nutter and even the homeless will look elsewhere like everyone else. One term please!!!!!

Comcast Chum-where is the plan?
Nutter can not meet the challenge. Murder and Homeless numbers are not a result of the "Mayor" just like a failing economy. What a lame statement, if the economy bounces back he is prepared. A no brain Mayor can ride a good economy. Government is too complicated for the "Nutterian" mind and the inky papers always qouting "Cohen" shows bias reporting..Nutter is a proven Comcast Chum. If the Mayor is talking about creating jobs WHERE IS THE PLAN? and quite frankly what can a Mayor of Philadelphia do to create jobs? That is something the inky papers should write about.

RDA and City Council
I Read your article on PlanPhilly (http://www.planphilly.com/node/9323) about RDA's streamlining of the sales process. The whole system is so politically flawed and corrupt that there is no way RDA will ever sell all those properties until City government is cleaned up. An example - I've had a neighboring shell property contracted since January of last year - an have yet to settle - reason - Council Woman Tasco's office - they are looking for "political contributions" before giving neighborhood consent for a duplex variance - historically the property was a duplex but since it's been vacant for so long, the use expired and needs to be reinstated. I went to L&I, was refused, went to ZBA, denied again, now I'm going to Court of Common Pleas - wasting a lot of personal $ and taxpayer $. The crazy part is how naive I was about the whole situation. I actually thought that me wanting to buy a vacant disaster would be welcomed - purchasing a property with my own $, rehabbing it, and generating $ for the city in form of personal and property taxes. I can't believe the struggle I've had and that there is no one interested in helping. Would love to know what you think about my issue and how I need to proceed.

mayors office of community services
This nuttier has increased his office ten fold since taking office. These jobs are nothing more than political pawns for this dictator to push around. They make 12 per hr with no benefits and they duplicate other city dept responsibilities if at all… they get up to date equipment while other depts. are told there is no money for pens, now they have expanded to the 3rd floor of 990 Springarden St spending thousands of taxpayer’s dollars for renovations .check it out! Get rid of this waste the taxpayers would save thousands of dollars but NO it’s what he wants no matter what the cost. This is a class example of union busting.

snow/trash/311
I am wondering if I can take some money off my taxes since my street hasn't been plowed and my trash has been sitting out for almost a week. The mayor assured us that the trash would be picked up on Friday. Still there. Tried to call 311 but it was too busy to answer. Does anything work under this mayor? By the way, I would only rate you a "0" but it wasn't one of the options.

What I meant to say was... How much are we spending to try and convince tourists and suburbanites to drive into Center City to eat, shop and dine here? Why aren't the tax paying residents of Philadelphia given any type of incentive to have an affordable, reasonable and safe quality of life here. Why is it that we as residents always get the run around by the powers that be? What we have here is a city which is rich in heritage and history, but is quickly becoming a city that is against its own people and culture. We have a parking authority with absolutely too much power against its fellow citizens. I am not a criminal and don't want to be fined like one if I park too close to a curb when I get home from work at 1 am and there isn't a parking spot for blocks and want to get in my home safely. But that excuse would never hold up in court. I voted for you Mayor Nutter as did many others because I thought you were progressive minded, intelligent, compassionate and creative.. But what you have shown thus far is that you are a lawyer, schemer and a liar. You turned your back on our communities in regards to the casinos, you changed your mind, you gave up and gave in... and that is not why I voted you in. You want to impose a new soda tax on the residents of philly in the name of "health"? Is that all you could come up with? Who are you kidding? Explain to the people who don't know.. Why is it unhealthy? And why are you willing to capitalize on peoples unhealthy drink choices? Your a hypocrite, keep the "unhealthy" part out of your justification for this tax. You want to charge all home owners a new trash removal fee? What do our taxes pay for now? What will we get in return for that additional 300 dollars your getting? My trashcan pushed up against my house? Or the rotten swill that leaks out of the truck gets immediately hosed down and sanitized? Or how about the trash gets picked up? or on time? We already independently pay for the incredibly costly basic human services...gas, water and electricity.. At least the city could do is take care of trash removal.. Wait we already pay for that service out of our taxes.... don't we? The greatest things about this city have absolutely nothing to do with the current government, but the worst things about this city are because of the current government. Keep sticking it to the hard working, long time residents of this city and you are going to see the biggest flight of people moving out for good. I don't do my business in Center city, my quarter is only worth 8 minutes, a parking ticket can cost half a days pay, 8 percent sales tax, Septa is expensive and unreliable, Parking lots are 24 bucks for only a few hours... I'd rather cross the bridge or go outside of philly to do my business. Its sad.

Ow Howl Nutter Loses Money for Citizens with Salaries and Pension
Director, Camille Barnett could take advantage of such a lucrative retirement deal courtesy of long-suffering Philadelphia taxpayers. While she won't be here long enough to vest in the city pension system by her June 30 departure, Barnett is eligible to buy into the retirement plan by virtue of her public service in other top government posts in Austin, Texas, and Washington, D.C. If Barnett makes a payment of more than $100,000, she could collect a pension of $49,880 a year, according to Finance Director Rob Dubow. That's a sweetheart deal. But it also shows the need for the city to reform such seemingly out-of-control pension provisions. The city's soaring pension costs are one of the main drivers of the current budget woes. From Barnett's perspective, she pretty much called this when Nutter introduced her in 2007: "There's so much opportunity here in Philadelphia."

illegal Dirt Bikes & ATVs terrorizing Point Breeze
Will the Mayor and the Police Department even acknowledge and try to arrest and put an end to these young people that are racing unlicensed dirt bikes & ATVs through my neighborhood on a daily basis? They are speeding, doing 'wheelies' and racing around moving vehicles and running red lights while the police just slowly drive around not stop this? Police officers actually told me 'we can't catch them so we don't chase them'. Talk about apathy of a city. Will we wait until they run over and kill a child or an elderly person before the Mayor and police department react?

MBE/WBE Participation
There have been no reports posted since April of 2009 for the year ending June 30, 2008. How do we know how certified M/WBE firms are faring in this tough economy? There have been tremendous reductions in staff at the Office of Economic Opportunity. What was the participation like on the South Street Bridge? How about the Sugar House Casino? Where are the reports based on the Mayor's Advisory Commission on Construction Industry Diversity? The Mayor is paper thin on diversity.

Michael Nutter was my City Council representative for years and he couldn't have cared less about my neighborhood. His staff was rude an inattentive. If you did not live in the Chestnut Hill section of his district you were not worth his time. My neighbrhood went through many changes while he respresented us. There was major blockbusting and increased crime. He did nothing to even look like he cared. His office couldn't even handle basic problems. For example, there was an 18-wheeler truck parked illegally everyday in the same spot. The cops and PPA would never show up to ticket the vehicle, even after it caused multiple accidents due to the fact that it created limited visibilty. I asked Nutter's office for help in getting the guy ticketed. They did absolutely nothing after multiple calls and office visits complete with photos and videos. The only reason the truck is now gone is that Nutter became Mayor and Curtis Jones Jr is now our representative. Within a week of Jones taking office, he got the police to ticket the guy and the truck has not been back. He has also been able to get the illegal 'I Buy Houses' signs taken down immediately. Nutter has always been useless. It is nothing new!

The straw that broke...
The mayor's stance on sharing info on illegal aliens, unfortunately, identifies him as a typical politician...interested only in securing votes for himself and his party. VERY disappointing!

traffic lights
i attended grade school with mike nutter and i must admit thta is the main reason i voted for him...HUGE MISTAKE...why is he replacing all the traffic lights with stop signs...is he doing it in the neighborhood where he lives? he is truly NOT FOR THE PEOPLE...he has opened my eyes to the fact that ANYONE running for office, tell us what we want to hear and when they're elected they are ALL FOR THEMSELVES...no more broken promises for me... i have decided to quit voting

Homless Veteran
Your Honor. Thank you for taking the time read this. I am a Vietnam Veteran that was homeless for almost two years. I was not on drugs or in prison. I became homless due to service-related disability and became disabled. I could not work any longer. I was able to find a program that the VA and the PHA was working on called the VASH program. I got on the waiting list for a voucher for the housing. After being on the waiting list for over a year, I finally recieve a voucher in April of this year. I was able to save money from my VA pension for the two months rent and security deposit. I found a place to call home after looking at a few apartments. The Multi-Veteran Center which is also suppossed to assist you with a rapid transit-refund once you have found a place to live. The deadline I had was 18JUN10 and I was able to find one in May. The rapid refund is to assist you with the moving expenses, furniture and deposit on the rental. Your Honor I need your help. I was told by the Center that they ran out of money. I informed them that I saw in the paper were over $650,000.00 was awarded to the Center (which is located at 4th & Race St). I was told that money was for ex-convicts and drug addicts and I would have to go back to the Ridge Avenue Shelter and put my name back on the list. In other words, I had to become homeless again. Your Honor, I need your help. I am tried of sleeping on the floor and sitting on the floor. Do I have to be ex-convict or a drug addict to get help? The VA and PHA approved my voucher. I have been put through drug testings and meetings about how not to become homeless again. Build your self-esteem etc; I am sixty years and a former Marine with a honorable discharge. I just want to get off the floor. email address:joneskwame@aol.com. Thank you for taking the time. This is my son's computer and he will let me know when you reply.

311
What is the purpose of 311 is all of the message ressponses seem to be pre-written. I wrote about the same issue 3 times and got 3 different pre-written replies. NO why dont they do their jobs and FORWARD these emails to person in charge at the POLICE stations. WHEN GIVEN EVERY BIT OF information they need. District, house number and times of day/night activity is going on. I AM A TAX PAYER and my issues SHOULD be resolved. SEEMS the more I try to fix things they want me to spend money on doing it.

Tax payers deserve to be able to sell their own homes
I am a resident of southwest philadelphia, and have been for the last 28 years. 5 years ago a couple moved into our block, which has 10 property owners in total, refitted their garage into a horse stable, and brought 5 horses out to join us in our residential neighborhood! An average horse creates 50 pounds of manure a day. That is 250 pounds of manure on a daily basis. They are in violation of numerous codes, L&I has been made aware, multiple times, in writing, in e-mail, and via the phone, however have taken NO ACTION! I recently decided to sell my house, next door to the "horse people" as we affectionately call them, and so far the buyers who have come out have all stated, in writing, that they would have made an offer if not for the horrendous smell of horse manure. Another resident on our block is trying to sell his house as well, same issue. In addition to manure, the bugs and flies have really picked up. I spoke with the owners of the horses, and their reply was "We're not leaving, if someone wants to buy your house, they better love horses" UNBELIEVABLE L&I has not responded to my repeated phone calls and e-mail, the SPCA says there is nothing they can do, and the District Attorney states that this is outside of their control as it is another City of Philadelphia agency not enforcing their policies. L&I is corrupt, it just so happens that every time a resident calls, the "horse people" seem to be in a rush to get their horses on to a trailer and get them out of there. It just so happens that the L&I truck shows up about 15 minutes after they leave... "nothing we can do" To add insult to injury, the horse people have cleared out a section of Redevelopment authority land to use as a horse corral. This land is right across the street from my house. They let the horses do their business right there and just leave it to ferment.. RDA has been informed, came out, put up no trepassing signs twice (which the horse people rip down) and say "Theres nothing we can do about it." GET AND INJUNCTION! TAKE LEGAL ACTION. THEY ARE FLAGRANTLY VIOLATING TRESPASSING AND ZONING CODES AND THERE IS "NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT?" The police department is corrupt. I see the cops feeding the horses carrots, but every time we call them to report the trespassing on RDA land, they never ever show up...thats right, they don't come. Unfortunately I've had to hire a private attorney to sue L&I and RDA for not enforcing their zoning regulations and no trespassing ordinances. 7 of the 10 property owners on our block have all said they would vote the horse people off the island, and will be joining me for a class action suit which my attorney is very confident will yield the desired results. FYI, the owner of the horses owns south street bagel on 2nd and south. He has a worker that lives in an apartment (zoning breach) above the horse stable (zoning break) who is a 60+ year old polish immigrant. They don't even give him keys to the fence. He climbs a 6 foot tall, chain link fence, every night to get to his residence...sad.

Comprehensive Reading Skills
Wow it took two and half months to get a response to a plea for help. And what do I get a letter that does not even address my concern. I am so tired of paying taxes to a city that could care less about it's citizens.
