under a lot of strain
They have been doing more with less for years. Lip service from politicians and no support from IAFF or the so called union brotherhood...

Slim shady
Imagine what they could do with real, competent leadership.

How Ironic
How Ironic that the picture you have representing the Fire Dept. is of Engine Co. 14. Engine Co. 14, formerly of Foulkrod & Darrah Sts., was closed in the beginning of 2009, along with 4 other Engine Companies and 2 Ladder Companies.

Fireman's Test Always a Mystery?
How come the public never knows when the fireman's test is coming up? My husband would love to be a firefighter, but everytime we called to check on the dates, it was like the operators on the phone had no idea they always would say check back in a couple of months. Okay that's helpful considering we all know how fast time goes, and by the time you do remember to call the test has already been given and will not be given again for another four years?

Wrong department, Rosemary
Hey rosemaryy, the test is given by central personnel, not the Fire Department. Your gripe is with them, not the brave men of the PFD. BTW, it is announced on the City of Phila. Personnel website-and it just closed on 2/5. Sorry if your husband didn't get his application in, but applying isn't exactly rocket science. Although the PFD does lots of recruiting in minority neighborhoods, for some reason, and apparently gives hiring preferences to minorities as well.

Great Job!
Can't complain about PFD! Not like the cops abusing us, these people just help in all situations!

RUDE
Yesterday I had to call 911 to report a neighbor had fallen off his step and hit is head due to too much alcohol.I totaly understand that the paramedic's that responded to this call probably see this kind of thing day in and day out and that someone else in the city could be having a heart attack and they are helping someone that drank to much and did this to himself but these guys were down and out rude to this man. They made comments about the man urinating himself and called him a "Winery". These paramedics are "Professionals" paid by the tax payers of Philadelphia and they should act like it. I hated that they had to come out for someone being "Stupid" and drinking so much that he hurt himself but that is their job. If they don't like it they need to find a new job and stop being so "unprofessional".

Your Firehouse is CLOSING
Service Cutbacks Faulted in Toddler's Death SAN DIEGO - San Diego's fire chief says service cutbacks increased the time it took paramedics to reach a toddler who choked to death on a gum ball. But police got there within minutes and Fire Chief Javier Mainar said Wednesday he doesn't know whether firefighters could have saved the boy if they'd arrived sooner. Two-year-old Bentley Do of Mira Mesa died Tuesday night. The family lives about a block from a San Diego fire station, but that crew was away on another call, filling in for another station whose engine was sidelined by a rotating series of service "brownouts" designed to save money. Police arrived within five minutes of the 9-1-1 call and began CPR. Fire paramedics arrived 4 1/2 minutes later and took over but the child was pronounced dead at a hospital. When they Brownout my firehouse, how will my family be affected. Miss Meeks stated something like this "The Mayor is one major fire away from apolitical disaster" The mayor will tell us that the cuts won't have any change in our service. To all reading this, please use your common sense regarding that statment.

Fire Dept great but the union sucks!
I Love the Fire Department and always will! A bunch of valiant men/women. But tell me why the UNION # 22 has a sign posted every few days at Engine 43/Ladder 9 that says the Mayor ordered the closing of the fire station? A scare tactic at best and a lie at most.

SPEND SPEND:
The reason that sign is out there is because the mayor "BROWNS OUT" Ladder 9 EVERY OTHER NIGHT! Make sense? If you read the sign closely, it says the mayor ordered the closing of the LADDER!!!! Read the sign and know the facts next time before you open your mouth!!!!!!

Phila Fire Union uses Scare Tactics!
UgotGas I didn't open my mouth I typed U MORON. Secondly the part you refer to is in small print so I would actually have to walk up to it and read it. 3rd It is a lie at best that the station is closed. So they move a ladder truck here or there. If you knew what you were doing you'd be an officer and not a dumb grunt!

i did 32 years on that great dept you arse and read all the print large and small just like a contract. yeah it might be a scare tactic if you live near where these companies are closed for good or browned out for the day or night and you need them. but you must be a hero able to all thing yourself like putting out fires and saving lives. its not that they moved the ladder truck look in the window and its sitting there and it will not go anywhere fire or not until the next day. Whats wrong with being a grunt were you ever in the service or did you run and hide. dont label others until you walk in thier shoe if you have what it take.
