Snow cleanup
Is there anything that the Dept. of Streets can do to imrpove snow removal in places like Manayunk? Beyond Ridge Ave., it seems like the rest of the neigborhood is completely forgotten.

Bogus trash tickets
The SWEEPS program writes bogus trash tickets in gentrifying neighborhoods. These arrive via mail 5 months after the supposed violation. City officials lie about the process and nothing is done. It is done selectively in West Phila. and a special service district has been exposed assisting the targeting. Corporate landlords on the board of the service district break all trash laws weekly with impunity. It will drive me to leave the city if federal law enforcement does not intervene soon. That appears to be the goal of this ticketing.

Good service for trash pickup
My main interactions with Streets have been trash pickup and dealing with the lousy neighbors next door (student renters) who often leave out messy piles of trash on the wrong day or leave broken furniture on the sidewalk when they move out. On both counts, Streets has done a fine job. Trash pickup is much neater than it used to be: no more recycle bins left in the street to get run over, no more flinging ripped bags around to scatter the contents. And for dealing with the dirty neighbors and their absentee landlord, Streets has been amazing. Usually when there's bulky items left out, someone from the Dept cleans them up the same day or next day. They've issued several citations for trash problems too. Even the people on the phone are polite and helpful. I'm very happy with the service.

Clip
This must be a great job walking around giving violations to people at 8am and marking 10:30 am,I guess that gives these city employees plenty of time at the end of the day to do their personal business on the taxpayers money. What a joke this city has become. Why can't I give a zero rating for clip. Can't handle the truth.Clip is just another tax on the working class of philly.

Pine and Spruce Bike Lanes
I love it that bike lanes got added to Pine and Spruce, but having ridden them last night in the rain with an unsteady road, I was acutely aware of just how bad those streets are. The bike lines are riddled with really uneven patches and puddles. Lots and lots of puddles within the bike lane. I don't think I'd ever noticed how bad those streets were until I had to be more conscious of staying in a zone than I was just going where the road looked okay so long as there weren't cars. Our streets are a mess. They should all be torn up and repaved with porous pavement everywhere!

Dual trash pickups = more overtime?
When there's a holiday, the trash collection is supposed to occur a day later than scheduled. In my neighborhood trash day is Thursday. So the week of Labor Day, trash should have been collected on Friday. Inexplicably, a city truck came around on that Thursday, a day early, and took the trash. Not the recycling -- that wasn't collected. The next day a truck came and collected the recycling...and a short while later, ANOTHER truck came around to pick up trash. Of course, since it was picked up a day earlier, there was mostly nothing to collect. What a waste! I'm sure some overtime was paid out for this.

Street Sweeping
Street sweeping needs to be done on any street wide enough outside of center city. The rest of us would like to have clean streets in our neighborhood as well.

Stimulus $$$$ at work
In June, using alleged stimulus money, the streets dept tore up a large amount of perfectly good streets in my neighborhood saying they were due for resurfacing. They'd be back in a few days to finish. Now 3 months later, the streets are still ripped up. Called Brian O'neill's office and a lacky said they wouldn't be done anytime soon due to lack of money. This, 2 days after they'd ripped and resurfaced the street o'neill lives on along with his neighbors' block. Must be good to have a councilman living on your block.

Bike Lanes for Traffic Violators
I recently drove crosstown on Spruce and discovered the new bike lanes. I watched in amazement and bemusement as the bikers went through every red light while the automobiles backed up block by block because there is only one lane. Hooray for the bikers who pay their fair share of revenues to the streets department for their lanes! Why can't they be subjected to mandatory licensing if we need to supply lanes for their use. I am not anti-bike just pro fairness.

no leaf collection
for those of us fortunate to have a lot of trees nearby, we are getting swamped with leaves. Now we learn that the street dept will not do curbside leaf collection anymore. I know the money is tight, but I have news for you - people will still sweep the leaves in the gutters and it will end up clogging the storm sewers which will be even more expensive to clean up. I advise you post dates for leaf collection again or be ready to clean it out of the storm sewers.

Trash collection
Ben Dover: I wish I had the employees that you are praising on my block!! The people I have overstuff the back of the truck before compressing & trash spews out all over the middle of the street. If you don't stand outside & watch them when they are doing this, they leave the trash all over the street & move on. Not to mention, they show up anytime between 8 & 5pm. If your not home when they pass through, your outside cleaning up the disgusting trash they left, again!!!

Recycling
For the last several weeks the recycling folks have been taking a bag or two of my trash in addition to my recycling. The trash is all in white, 13-gallon, kitchen garbage bags and the recycling is all in a blue recycling tub. I understand that recycling isn't as profitable as it used to be, but they aren't trying to pad the volume with trash, are they? Either way, I would think that separating trash from recycling later would only cost us more. I also wish the recycling folks wouldn't throw the bins in merely the general direction of where they found them. They are often between parked cars or in front of steps blocking the sidewalk.

trash collection or not collected which is usually the case
why do they always leave one or two bags of trash on each street when they're collecting trash? also they make a huge mess and don't clean up. someone needs to be there with a broom and clean up after them. they generally do a poor job of collecting the trash.

Hills in Mt. Airy
The intersection of Sedgwick and Creshiem in West Mt. Airy is at the bottom of 2 hills. I have watched, since Saturday morning, 35-40 cars get either stuck in the intersection or, after realizing they weren't making it up the hills, slide back down...only to get stuck in the intersection. Why aren't hills prioritized (after attending to the Snow Routes, of course)? When there are 3 or 4 cars stranded, all gunning their engines in the same intersection, trying to get out, it's a dangerous situation. We've seen 2 plow trucks since Saturday- one didn't have its plow down, and the other went by so fast that it did virtually nothing. After I watched a police van get stuck yesterday, I thought the intersection would finally get plowed. I'm still waiting...

Second place to cut
This department is so bloated and full of abuse starting with the top down. How many of the sanitation department employees work 7 1/2 or 8 hours a day? Many of the drivers only have to do one or 2 loads then they're down 11:30 - noon. The job they did with the snow this past week was horrible. Leaving main streets covered with snow or ice (because they didn't salt). The city is compensated from the state for doing state highways (oh, there are more state highways then I-95 or really big streets); the city is stealing from the state for work that isn't done.

filling a plumber's ditch
It take the Streets Dept. 2 to 3 months to fill an opening in the street made by plumber when he connects a replacement line to the main line. Meanwhile, the ditch gets deeper and deeper which is dangerous and can damage a car. Why does it take so long?

Snow removal on bridge sidewalks?
I'm not sure about other bridge sidewalks, but it seems snow is never removed from the sidewalks of the 12th Street bridge over the Vine Street Expressway. This is especially evident after big snow events. My wife and I are among the many who cross this bridge on the way to and from work. As these sidewalks are not in front of a home or business, who is responsible for clearing them? Just thought I’d bring this up since there is another big snow coming this weekend.

Trash & Recycle Cleanup
On an average of once a month the trash guys throw recycle in with the trash. If we don't recycle you can be fined! So why are they throwing recycle in with the trash? I've complained but it's still happening. And... the trash left behind after trash is picked up! They drop something but don't pick it up. A lot comes from the truck, so please clean it up.

Snow removal
I have a suggestion that may work to clear the smallest of the small streets in the city such as: Manayunk, and S. Philly of massive amount of snow. 1. The city could purchase snow blowers that block captains could borrow from the city when there is a serious storm like the one we just had. The block captain would call the Street dept to request the blowers, the street dept would deliver the blower to that block and the block captain would sign for it. They could be shared between 4 & 5 blocks with the block captains of each block working together. 2. Post some type of large water tight containers or bins on these blocks that is filled with salt, and locked. The block captains would have access to these locked containers for the purpose of clearing his or her block during the winter season and then removed in the Spring. This worked in Germany.

Not nutter its THE UNION WORKER that still doesnt have a contract!!

impressive performance
My street is only one block long, and certainly not strategic. We have been plowed regularly for both this storm and the weekend one. I am surprised and delighted. So, thumbs up. My only thumbs down observation is for the bus stops on South Broad Steet. People have had to climb over 3 foot high mounds of snow to access the bus, or stand in the street. very dangerous. let's dig access paths from the bus stop to the street please. thank you. Pat West

no plowing, either storm
I do live on a tertiary street, but it was not plowerd after last weekend's storm, and then it snowed again. This morning, neither Carpenter nor Christian streets were plowed west of Broad. These are not tertiary streets. Citizens model their behavior on the city's: if the city doesn't seem, to care, neither do they. Expect fewer folks to make an effort with their sidewalks.

still waiting in East Mt. Airy
East Mt. Airy got the short shrift after the last storm (Feb 5th and 6th), and there's just little to no evidence of plowing after this latest one. Stenton was in horrendous shape until sometime this afternoon. Sprague is a nightmare, as is East Meehan. I was only out for a short while to clear off my car, and during that time five vehicles passing by got stuck - each to the point of needing to be pushed. I know it must be difficult to deal with two crazy storms packed on top of each other, but had the streets been thoroughly plowed from the first storm during the 4 day break between them, this one may have not been so crippling.

Center City traffic 02/12/2010
I left my work at 20th and and Callowhill Streets at 3:10 PM today, 02/12/2010. I picked up my wife at 8th and Spruce Streets at 5:05 PM. That's not a typo! It took me two hours to travel that short distance through the city. The streets were terrible. Because of the poor snow removal, where there used to be two travel lanes, there was now one travel lane. I am ashamed to live in this awful city. Shame on you Mayor Nutter. While I'm on this rant, my street in the Pine Valley section of the city was not plowed. I can't wait to move out of this second class city.

Snow Removal???
I live on a pretty wide street in the area of Fox Chase Cancer Center, while this street is usually used as a speed way in the morning and night with all this snow everywhere you would be lucky to get to the emergency room in enough time or the cancer center. This street Burholme and the streets around it are ridiculous. I understand they have othet main arteries to plow but this I would think would be a major one as well. I applaud the effort, but these roads have not been touched. We need some help in the Northeast.

12 miles=2 hours
Took me 2 hours to get home today (12 miles: from 20th & Market to Cottman & Blvd). The trashmen get more trash on the street than in the truck. Recycling always leave some cans in the bin, duh. My street was plowed Tues. night, there were only 2 inches of snow at the time, that was it. Most Center city streets and sidewalks are not clear of snow.

Snow Removal = Adequate, Trash = Horrible!
While the Streets Dept has done a pretty good job of snow removal considering the historic snowfalls of this season, their trash collection record, at least in my neighborhood, gets worse and worse. A couple of years ago, trash was collected on schedule (meaning the scheduled day) every week. For the last 4-6 months however, it's always been 8:00 pm on scheduled day at the earliest and more likely sometime the afternoon of the next day. Our normal day is Friday, so we're now paying overtime since they can't keep on schedule. This week had a holiday, so it was 7:30 Sunday night before our trash was collected. Maybe we should look at paying them a flat salary for trash collection to give them an incentive to get it done on time.

Auto messages are inaccurate
Old Richmond. During the last snow storm, we received an auto voicemail telling us that our trash would be collected two days late, so instead of putting the trash out on Thursday, we should put it out on Saturday. We put it out on Saturday, but it was never picked up until the following Friday. (We never received a corrected voicemail for any pickup changes.) Yesterday we received a message not to put out trash until next Thursday because all trash trucks were being used as snow plows. AHHH! The trash truck just went up the street collecting any trash that had been put out. Please stop sending me inaccurate voicemails if corrected information is not going to be sent out, too. (And just to be on record, we never saw a plow during the last snow storm. Luckily we have a good block and shoveled the street ourselves.)

My trash day is Wednesday. The last snowstorm occurred on Weds 2/10/10. It is now Thursday 2/25/10 and our trash has still not been picked up. Really 3 weeks and you cant get the trash picked up. Now the mayor is talking about a Trash Removal fee. That's a good one.

Street Snow Removal
Just to echo the sentiments of others on here, snow removal in East Falls is sub par at best. My street (Cresson Street, which I willingly admit is a narrow street) had compacted ice and snow on it for days after the 3rd major snowstorm. I was home bound for 3 work days because the roads were untouched. It wasn't until that Friday night that there was even a sign of a plow. Living on such a narrow street was my decision when I moved in, but there has to be a better way to deal with such large snow falls in that area. We can only shovel so much!

Cleanliness is next to godliness
Jeers for street cleaning. This town is filthy (goes with trash removal). Rather than spend tax money on things used by few (pools and library's), spend it on things used by many, the streets and police. Our health, safety and welfare should be the main concerns of our elected officials.

Snow plows
I commend the Streets Department employees for doing a very good job most of the time. My sole complaint is the way they use their snow plows on my street. I live next to Walnut Lane Golf Course so parking is only permitted on one side of the street. The other side of the street is totally unused for parking or anything else. For some reason, the snow plow drivers REFUSE to point their plows towards the golf course instead of towards our parked cars! If they simply turned their trucks around, they would not block our cars in tons of ice and snow, but there is no reasoning with these guys. The one I talked to also had his girlfriend on the truck with him. I don't care of he gets a little nooky while working but at least do the right thing here.

Trash Collectors.
When I think back on trash collection and how it used to work here in Philly, and then I compare that to how trash collectors work today, I'm very happy. Gone are the days of trucks parked outside the bars. Gone are the days of trash trucks hanging over the side of a bridge. Gone are the days of city workers knocking on the door for a tip to take your trash. Today, they get down the street, pick up everything and go. Over the years I've found myself behind many truck, so I've been able to watch these folks work. They work in the heat, the cold, the rain and the stink. They do a very good job. I am happy with the service and I believe I'm getting my money's worth. And no, I do not work for the Street's Department, nor do any of my friends or relatives. I just really believe they do a tough job very well.

TRASH CITATIONS
I've watched these SO CALLED inspectors, inspect trash bags. What they do is kick the bag. Not open and see what's inside. No, just kick the bag. What a great way to fine tax paying citizens. "Kick the bag". Some system some beauracrat thought up. What Carlton Williams says" it's on the citizen" to prove he/she did not commit an infraction. What ever happened to "INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY" by the Bill of Rights. Mayor Nutter and the City Council are just using another scheme in taxing the citizens of Phila. They think the citizens are "SHEEPLE" and treat them as such. Keep it up guys, you are losing tax paying citizens every day. Election day is a great time to express our anger towards these so called leaders. I am voting any and all incumbent elected officials out of office and I suggest every citizen really do the same. SEND ALL OF THEM A MESSAGE: BYE, BYE, AND GO FIND A JOB WHERE YOU REALLY HAVE TO WORK TO SURVIVE. SEE WHAT IT'S LIKE TO HAVE DRONES GIVING OUT CITATIONS. SEE WHAT IT'S LIKE PAYING THESE FINES

Light the way north
I recently attended a sports event at LaSalle University. Driving home, I decided to go straight down Broad St back to South Philadelphia. What a pleasure it was driving from Broad and Olney to City Hall. The traffic lights had been timed and driving at a moderate speed, I may have had to stop at 2 or 3 red lights the entire trip. However, going from City Hall to Jackson St was a different story. THere were times when I caught 3 or 4 red lights in a row. Of the 22 blocks on South Broad, I must have caught over 12 red lights. It seems to me that traffic would be lighter if these lights could be timed as they are in North Philly. Not to mention the gas used and emissions that could be reduced. So, let's see what the will do about this.

Rotten Street Conditions
It took an act of congress to get lights put back on the Platt bridge. Is it going to take the same thing to get Callowhill st. repaved from 95 to Broad st. This street has been in horrible shape for years. I have seen dead end streets being repaved with abandoned houses on them in SW Philly. What sense does that make? And if anyone cares how about taking a look at Island Ave.

Block party not cleaned up
My block had a block party this past Memorial Day and they left tons of litter on the block. I witnessed one neighbor dumping their used bbq charcoal into the water in the gutter, which then moved it down to in front of my house, which I had to clean up the following evening, along with 4 bags of trash. And I didn't even participate in the party! The city really needs to come to the blocks and see if it has been cleaned up and if not, refuse them a permit the following year.

fuel waste
I am quite happy with the trash collection in my neighborhood and the courtesy of the guys (men and women) who do this difficult job..... My problem is management. I routinely take recyclables to the NW transfer station. ON every occasion there are two to four trucks in the yard sitting with the engines idling. Most recently #92R121 abd #92R122. Why are they idling since they are not going anywhere in the next 30 minutes? This is a self-service recycle yard so there are no drivers in the trucks (the yard manager & staff are in an air conditioned shed) and it seems ludicrous to keep them running just to be able to operate the compactor when the tailgate is full. 1) These trucks burn a minimum of a gallon per hour; (2) this idling increases wear and tear and, therefore, downtime and maintenance costs (FYI: idling causes twice the wear & tear as driving). (3)Diesel fuel no longer gellies though this is a winter problem (4) newer diesels do not require extensive warmup before operating (see wear & tear) (5) since the trucks are not going anywhere brake air pressure does not need to be built up (5 minutes maybe?).... How much time is needed to build up hydraulic pressure to operate the compactor? This is not a cement truck that must keep that drum turning but a truck sitting idling for 10 hours per day (at govt fuel cost that's $26 per day per truck not counting emissions).

Corner of Broad and Snyder needs better trash handling
Every day I walk to Broad and Snyder to pick up the subway, and practically every day I'm disgusted and let down by the amount of trash that either peppers the street or is flagrantly left in large piles. It is quite aweful. The good news is new solar powered trash cans were recently installed. This has helped quite a bit to control the amounts left. However, there is still a problem. To cite a specific example, this morning, near the subway, in the MIDDLE OF THE SIDEWALK, someone had left a large filled garbage bag. But this wasn't even the main problem. Others had put all kinds of non-bagged garbage on top and surrounding this bag of garbage, as if it was a designated trash area. I have been thinking about why this specific incident occurred, and why there is so much trash in general. I think much of it has to do with the fact that the apartments along this corridor are rentals, and by the looks of the them, run by slum lords. Perhaps the tenants do not have a proper place to store their garbage? I think the owners of these properties should be investigated for this problem. The other problem is the amount of litter that is from McDonald's, Dunkin Donuts and Popeyes. These places are at this corner, and the amoumts of litter created by their patrons is enormous. There are so many transit riders here who clearly have no interest in keeping this area clean because it is not their neighborhood (perhaps their own neighborhoods are even trashier?)Can anything be done here? The address is the 1300 block of Snyder, with most garbage nearer to the subway entrance. Thank you for looking into this.

Another bogus trash ticket
The Streets department is a joke. First they send me a ticket for someone's property half a block away. Not my property but they claim that *I* own it. Someone was "supposed" to get back to me on July 1, it's August 10. Not holding my breath there. SECONDLY, they've been walking around giving out tickets and lying about the citation. I now have a $50 ticket for "sidewalk not litter free" with a picture of my recycling which is IN a clear bag IN the City Provided Recycling BIN. Nice living in West Philly. Real Nice.

Block parties
the first block party they had where i live left 5 bags of trash for me to pick up on memorial day. they cleaned up this past sat after another block party but had the pa blasting music until after 1am. They just put another flyer in my door for ANOTHER block party this weekend. 2 weekends in a row?! Is this legal? Why don't the PPD monitor these block parties to make sure they are shut down by the 8pm cutoff time that the city sets?

Trash
I think they do a pretty good job with getting the trash picked up on time--I've seen them work very late into Friday evening to finish the job.

A fine fine.
Put the trash out today at 9:55 am. There was a fine in my back door from 8:28 am saying I had to pay a $50 fine for mixing recyclables in with the regular trash. That was not out yet. There was also no trash out yet from the neighbor to the left, and the neighbor to the right had out a few things, but because of a PREVIOUS problem, I had spray painted THEIR adress on their trash and recycling cans. So where did the fine come from? The city is once again using the Northeast to make up budget shortfalls. It is a bullying tactic to give bogus fines, knowing that the WORKING people can't afford to take off from work to fight it, and risk higher fines by ignoring it. Sounds like extortion to me. I wonder how many fines are given out in west and north Philly? No wonder people can't wait to get out of this city. Taxes, fines, no services. I will not pay this fine, I will not take off work, and if I have to, I'll find someone to sue the city and get an injunction to stop all recycling until they have an accurate and fair way to administrate any violators. I have also started a facebook group called Philadelphia Recycle revolt, and will be writing to the Inqirer and northeast times looking for people with similar problems to bring to the Mayors attention.

Manhole Risers
Manhole risers need to be installed to bring the manhole covers up to the same level as the street. Too often, even on freshly paved streets, the manhole cover is 1"-2" below the street, making it essentially a pothole. This is the case everywhere, even the main Center City blocks. This should be corrected.

Hard working crew and Streets
The Streets department has improved 1000 %, I know as I report issues daily for SeeClickFix, they respond to me and forward to other departments, they also inform me as when my issue is not theirs and suggest where to file...under staffed is the only reason they get a 4 vs. a 5!

Leaf Collection
I have a ton of leaves so even though I put out about 15 bags each trash day, I decided to drive some to the transfer station at State and Ashburner. According to the Northeast Times, you can drop them off anytime. So on Friday November 19th, I toted 10 bags up there. The guy on duty told me I was incorrect, Streets only accepts leaf drop off on Saturdays and I should stop reading the NE Times cause they print all kinds of wrong stuff. So I drive back home with my car packed to the gills with bags of leaves and figure I'll just go back on Saturday. But then I decided to check streets web site and sure enough, it said the same thing about anytime drop off. So now I call the custom service number listed there and was stunned when my call was actually answered on the 3rd ring. The service rep was quite helpful, told me the guy was wrong and that I should go back to State and Ashburner because she would call and set him striaght. So I did, and she did and the guy changed his tune and let me drop off my leaves. So all in all I was pretty satisfied with the outcome.

Trash piling high
I was out early this morning and I notice that the driveways and front lawns are piled high with trash. There is more trash than usual. My beautician told me that the trash removal service in Philly is one week delayed. Why???? We didn't have a blizzard. Why do we have to wait a whole week to look at trash everywhere. The alley cats and squirrels will have a field day for a whole week. Department of Streets...you've got to do better. I am so aggravated by this.

Thank you for snow removal
For the past 2 winters a supervisor and a Backhoe has helped to clear snow at the corner of Horrocks & Unruh. I am most thankful and appreciative of those efforts. Job well done.

School Snow Removal(Fox Chase Academics Plus)
Okay today is the first day back January 31st for school students from the snow last week. While trying to park on the street where I normally park, the whole perimeter of the school is full of snow, so there is no where to park. There is one path for cars to get in and get out. Teachers also had no where to park because the front of the school where they normally park only had one lane in and one lane out, and they were parking where the parents usually park to walk their children around. This is a poor job by the streets department and it is NEVER cleared out after a snowfall. We are supposed to fend for ourselves and the safety of our children! Should have kept my kids home another day due to the lack of cleanup by the philadelphia streets department. It's RIDICULOUS!!!!!

Recycle, if you do the work
I wanted to state that this may be a particular occurrence due to my neighborhood, but doea anyone have problems with recycle pick up in a non "blue can". I have been passed over multiple times becuse I use a hand painted recycle trash can. I have called the Streets Dept been given complaint#, assured it would be picked up within 2-3 days. It is that my collector person has told me she will not pick it up if it is not in a "blue can". I called 311 to find the "blue cans", but there are no more for the time being, and was told by Customer Service of the Streets Dept, that I should paint "recycle" on the trash can. They even sent me a sticker with recycle printed on it. But the collector will not pick it up, unless I stand at the curb, to ask for it to be emptied. What's up with that???

I see the Big Belly Trash cans in Fishtown now, so when will we get them along Alleghany Avenue? As a resident of Port Richmond I'm disgusted at the amount of trash there is constantly in our streets and in the sewers. I see people stuffing bags of trash in sewers in our area. PLEASE HELP!!!
